In the absence of Cristiano Ronaldo, it is the sight of Wayne Rooney that has most excited South Africa's football fans during Manchester United's pre-season tour to the country this week.
When Sir Alex Ferguson talks about the potential of a team who have already proved to be the best in England and in Europe, the names of Rooney and Ronaldo are never far from the manager's lips, even accounting for the latter's brazen flirting with Real Madrid in recent months.
That the players are so different perhaps heightens their appeal, but while Ronaldo has gone from strength to strength in recent years, Rooney has had to settle for playing second fiddle to United's poster boy. Ronaldo is absent from this tour with an ankle injury, but whether or not that absence becomes permanent with a move to Real, it seems that Rooney's days as the support act may be drawing to an end.
Ferguson admitted for the first time yesterday that he must shoulder some of the blame for Rooney's perceived problems in front of goal last season and revealed that the player can expect to play in his favoured central role more often in the next campaign.
Pelé, the former Brazil forward, thinks that Rooney has not developed at the rate that most would have expected since his arrival as an international striker at Euro 2004 and that his brittle temperament often hampers his performances. Ferguson, however, is convinced that when Rooney is played in his best position, people will see a more controlled and prolific player.
“I have to take a bit of responsibility for it,” the United manager said. “He's sacrificed himself and never complained about it, which says a lot for the lad. He will score goals. He scored a couple against Aston Villa last season after not scoring for seven games and I thought that would have catapulted him into a good run, but we kept using him in different positions. We need to define his role better.
“I think his best position is through the middle, either a front role or tucking in just behind. He can play either role very well. He is aggressive, has two feet, good pace, he has the courage to get in the box.”
Some may speculate that Ferguson is planning to move Rooney back to a central position in preparation for Ronaldo's departure, but while the Portuguese is still threatening to leave, the manager is keen to reward Rooney for his attitude. “It's great credit to the lad that he never complains,” Ferguson said. “Some players know what their best position is and they don't want to challenge themselves in any other one, but Wayne would play centre half [if he was asked to].”
United are expected to make a second, improved bid for Dimitar Berbatov, the Tottenham Hotspur striker, once the North London club's complaints about United's pursuit of the Bulgaria player have been addressed, and Ferguson believes that Berbatov could be good for Rooney.
“He may benefit by playing with someone with more experience than him,” he said. “That always happens with young strikers. At 22, he was never going to be the finished article.
“We signed Wayne for his potential, which is why we paid [Everton] £26 million for him. It's for the long view. In a few years' time we will be saying that's really brilliant business.”

Fergus the ans. is score goals. Tevez has a better finishing record than Rooney.
Lloyd, London,
Steve from Shropshire, my point is at £26 mil Sir Alex has to keep playing Rooney regardless or admit he overpaid. Capello wants to play him as a lone striker Man Utd have shown he' s not up to it. YoungTorres scored 30+ in his first season. Who would you rather have?
Steve, Manchester, UK
Ferguson hates Team England - the best way to hurt England is to fool around with Rooney and make sure he's in no form to score for England. Ferguson did that with great effect last year and avoided seeing Rooney exhaust himself pre-seaon during the Euros. No internationals next summer...
James, London, UK
When Rooney isn't all that busy up front, he'll go back for a bit of defending practice. He could play anywhere. If both keepers were crocked I'd put him by the net - he can do everything else. The lad's brilliant - get off his back.
John Orford, Balingasag, Philippines
Dee Manchester you are supporting my view Rooney represents his country but tcould not qualify for Euro 2008.
If he was the prolific striker was paid to be then we should have been to the semis or even won it. He is probably a very nice guy but I wish we had bought Torres when we had the chance

Tevez better than Rooney? I don't think so. What can CT do that WR can't?
The Rooney that ran rings around Turkey's players in 2003 and looked one of the best players in the World at Euro 2004 isn't that same player now. Injuries and off-field problems have stopped him becoming one of the greats.
Fergus Sira-Lexon, England,
"A waste" ? Another ignorant comment from someone who judges Utd from Match Of The Day highlights. His passing, movement etc are truly exceptional - even throughout the boring bits of a match. He cant score a last minute curler against Arsenal every week.
David, Salford,

He's already finished. When last did you see him have a good game for either Man Utd or England? Exactly.
Carys Mathews, Chester,
Fergie is right that Utd can improve. Last season - no centre forward, Scholes 2 goals, Giggs hardly a decent game and Rooney left half. Get him up front, buy someone with real pace to play with and a creative player in midfield. Chelski cannot play Lampard, Ballack Deco and Kaka in the same team.
nick Matthew, London,
I have always thought of Roo as over-rated!
I's amazing how us Brits throw around the world-class tag. He is not even as good as Tevez, let alone Ron (for all his faults).
SAF comments says it all, technique and skill were not used to describe him.
If Ron goes then it will be Tevez as No.1!!!
Raf, Luton,
Nick, i'm sorry but that's a load of rubbish! Rooney scored 23 goals the only season that he played up front with a recognised striker - Saha (for half of 06/07) therefore who knows what he could accomplish in a full season with Berbatov.
As for smoking and drinking, he's hardly alone in that!
Tim, Belfast, Northern Ireland
Nick - Rooney is a world-class footballer, who represents his country, and plays with passion in a United shirt - hence your comments I guess. United lose when Rooney doesn't play- says it all really. As for him smoking, a lot of footballers do. They also drink too. They are young men, not machines.
Dee, Manchester,
i totally disagree with Steve from manchester what an absurd comment to make if he was 6 million he would of gone. Wayne rooney is a world class player scored plenty of goals and is the second highest assist maker in the premier league over the last 2 seasons, behind ronaldo and he isnt a selfish.
richard, shropshire,
If Sir Alex had paid £6 m Rooney would have been gone by now. At £26 m you want the real deal not potential. If he was going to perform he would be doing it by now. Ronaldo and Torres have developed into world class, Wayne has gone backwards. Nobody queing up to buy Rooney says it all to me.
Steve, Manshester, UK
Tevez??? whar does Rooney's twin brother think of this. Plays in the same position in the same style, scores about the same number of goals 12/15 a season.
One of these players is always going to be dissapointed unless Ferguson plans to play with 2 support strikers and Bebatov.
Paul , Chiang Mai , Thailand
I think you'll find a surprising number of elite footballers smoke.
Zidane was the best one who springs to mind.
However, looking at your location you are unlikely to have an impartial view.
Some gin with your bitter lemon sir ?
Philip, manchester, uk
I am supporting Rooney to return to the centre stage.Be yourself,Be the number 1!Firing Portuguese ,Let Rooney to be the hero.Wish Manchester United will be better!
owen chen, ningbo, china
Isn't it funny how managers compliment their players.
I mean I have 2 feet as well, I can get aggressive (how aggressive do you want?), I am not afraid to get in the box either (whether I have the ball is another question). I guess the only thing between me and Rooney is the pace; oh and 120k/week.
Mike, Hong Kong, China
"Some may speculate that Ferguson is planning to move Rooney...in preparation for Ronaldo's departure."
This is getting ridiculous, what part of "There's no way Ronaldo will leave this summer" do you journalists not understand?
I bet you will still be saying he's leaving on September 1st!
Fergus Sira-Lexon, England,
A few years ago, most Everton fans believed that Kenwright had sold this lad on the cheap.
Now they think they got a good deal, citing the fact that he has never played as well for United as he did for Everton. He smokes, drinks and generally "plays the game" i.e. not football.
A waste.
Nick , Liverpool,
