Gerard Baker: choosing Palin is a risky gamble | Obama’s rhetoric aims for Middle America | Democrats reflect on an historic convention | McCain looks to win over independents
John McCain sent a surge of energy through his presidential campaign yesterday by choosing a woman with just two years’ experience as Governor of Alaska to be his running-mate.
On his 72nd birthday, the Republican nominee announced his choice as Sarah Palin, a 44-year-old moose-hunting mother of five.
The surprise choice makes the race for the White House even more historically charged, ensuring that for the first time there will be either a black man in the Oval Office or a woman as vice-president.
Speaking at a rumbustious rally in Dayton, Ohio, Mr McCain said that he had chosen Mrs Palin rather than a more traditional candidate because she had the “grit, integrity, good sense and fierce devotion to the common good” to shake up Washington.
The announcement came hours after Barack Obama accepted the Democratic nomination with a speech watched by 84,000 supporters in Denver and 38 million television viewers.
The Republican convention begins on Monday. The election takes place on November 4. Polls show the two candidates neck and neck.
Mr Obama has sought to answer charges that he lacks the experience to be president by picking Joe Biden, a 65-year-old veteran bruiser from the Senate, as his vice-presidential nominee. His speech on Thursday night attacked his rival’s temperament, age and support for President Bush, saying that Mr McCain subscribed to an “old, discredited Republican philosophy”.
By choosing a woman virtually unknown outside Alaska — until recently mayor of a town of just 9,000 people — Mr McCain will hope to boost his reputation as a maverick.
Mrs Palin made pointed reference to the defeat of Hillary Clinton at the hands of Mr Obama, saying: “It turns out the women of America aren’t finished yet and we can shatter that glass ceiling once and for all.”

I enjoy the "Switching my vote to McCain now" line. If your votes are cast for policies, or even beliefs, then it would be impossible to relate or confuse those of a Republican with those of a Democrat - much less haphazardly "switch" a vote. Lemmings galore!
Katie, Washington, DC, USA
Please note that Sarah Palin has more "Executive" level experience than Obama. . . or for that matter, all three other picks.
DPM, Idaho Falls, USA
As a woman who supported Ms.Clinton for president, I find it personally offensive that McCain has so impetuously selected Ms. Palin as his running mate. It is absurd to consider Ms.Palin's credentials as being anywhere near adequate for co-running our nation. Is McCain really that naive? Scary
Lisa, Turlock, USA
As an American working woman, new mother, sister to an American soldier currently in Iraq, and most of all someone who really hates politics - I am overjoyed by this selection for the Republican VP. I really hopes she takes on those Good Ole Boys. We need someone to clean up Washington.
Amanda, LaFontaine, IN, USA
Palin has a strong reputation for integrity and she is an expert in one of the three major issues in this election--energy. Obama--Mr. Change-- picked an insider with 30+ years in Washington as his running mate. McCain picked an outsider with executive experience.
She is also a conervative.
Terry L. Walker, Ladson, SC / USA
In some Republican circles, she has been discussed for VP for over a year. She is executive of by far the biggest state in square miles, by far the richest in mineral resources, and the only one bordering on two other countries, one being Russia across three miles of water that freezes every year.
Laura, Boston, USA
Go McCain!! The whiny liberals are gonna have to just deal with the fact that their experienced "community organizer" has no experience except being a great teleprompter reader. Nobody can name one of his accomplishments. He is way less qualified than Palin. Go McCain!!!
Steve , San Diego, United States
Consider this, our Presidential candidate has extensive experience and our vice Presidential candidate has minimal experience. However, the democratic vice Presidential candidate has extensive experience, but their Presidential candidate, where it counts the most, has MINIMAL experience.
Larry Manning, Pennsboro, USA
After hearing McCain's choice, the first thought I had was that he was going after the 18 million who voted for Hillary. Thanks anyway John, I'll wait four years for Hillary.
Camille, Albuquerque, USA
"I must say I find the hysterical screaming at American ploitical rallies extremely vulgar and distasteful- like American so-called culture I suppose"
Extremely vulgar and distasteful? I must say I find the British Empire raping and terrorizing large parts of our planet Earth vulgar&distasteful.
John, Boston, USA
What does Obama know except what his party tells him? Palin brings integrity to politics...she won't be bought by the highest bidder.
80% support by ANY population is awesome. The Alaskan politicians hate her, but the people love her. Sounds good to me!
lawhite, Idaho, USA
With a son in Iraq, how easily do you think she will get us into more wars? Wish all countries were run by mothers!
I'd like to remind some of you that our candidates are running for the AMERICAN presidency, not a world president. Their loyalty has to start with the USA. Obama has forgotten that.
lawhite, Idaho, USA
It's amazing to me that Obama and Biden's advanced degrees (and Biden's foreign policy experience) are basically being called "irrelevant" by those arguing that Palin has more experience. I'm glad Palin (rightly) horrifies Clinton supporters. American women aren't stupid, Mr. McCain!
Ryan, New York, USA
One of the craziest lines I've heard yesterday from a supporter: Sarah Palin understands foreign policy more than Obama because Alaska is closer to Russia and China. No wonder why so many Americans are so dumb!
Arlene, LA,
We select a candidate to be the leader that can inspire and foward our ideals. If your ideals are for humanity in our world then vote for Obama / Biden. If it is for a select few who have redefined greed and elitism, have drawn the line across mankind then its McCain / Palin.Welcome to Vietnam1968
Richard Goddard, Kirkcambeck, England / USA
Great choice for the Republicans - she's ultra right wing, anti-womans right to choose, anti-gay and just lurves to hunt and kill y'all. Only in crazy yank ville can such an abhorrent woman been seen as a 'great choice'. So glad I live in the UK.
Holly, Cheltenham, UK
It's "mum" or "mother", not "mom". Or have we become so culturally American that we adopt their slang too?
Mike Dales, Sutton,
We now have an even ticket on both sides. Both parties have an older experienced member along w/ a younger less experienced party member. Both campaigns can claim that they are making U.S. history while actually maintaining the status quo. What we need is a new viable political party in the U.S.
M. Burton Brown, Steeler Country , USA
From what I've read about her so far, it does seem like Mcain and Palin are Team Idiot 2008. God help us all if she's ever elected.
Jim McDonald, London, UK
my money would go on McCain but I can only get 13/8 - I need better odds than that to risk my money. otherwise I don't care who wins
peter c, Devizes, Wessex
How can you call this woman a 'beauty queen'? She was runner up in the MIss Alaska contest.
Alaska is the least populated state with the fewest ratio of women to men. That's like being the 2nd funniest comedian in Afghanistan.
Mohammad, Glasgow, Scotland
Does anybody want her hand on the nuclear trigger???
William Bauer, New York, USA
Who cares about rehersed speeches written by professional political teams.
Bring on the debates!

John, London, UK
We should call this the Affirmative Action Election.
Bill Cooke, Baltimore, USA
The people of the United States of America are fed up with lies, incompetence and rampant corruption. They are going to take back America. McCain has no hope and no chance. They are going to vote for CHANGE!!!
Garth Strong, Houston, USA
Dicount her at your own peril. I hear a buzz about Sarah that I have not heard about a Republican ever. And i usually vote for the left. . .
Lia, Columbia, US
Sarah Palin recently got a $100 million energy fund set up for alternative energy sources in Alaska to get them off of high cost fossil fuels. There is an energy source inventory being done for every community in Alaska. Everything is on the table--hydro, biomass, coal, nuclear, wind, solar, tidal,
Walt, Wheaton, IL, USA
This selection is an embarrassment. These are incredibly consequential times, with very complex economic and foreign policy challenges at every turn. Granted that Obama does not have a deep resume himself, but McCain's move demonstrates that he does not put country first.
joel, Washington, DC, USA
This woman has more experiance than Obama whose resume shows he is an "activist."
It is amazing how this woman is being slammed over her beliefs.
Kara Tyson, Mobile, USA
It looks like none of the other Vice-Presidential choices would take the job.
Douglas Ward, Grover Beach,Ca, USA
Well she should be able to sort America's oil problem out. After all it only took 4000 or so years to form after the global flood. A little prayer should be able to reduce this.
Now that they have a VP candidate who is a young earth creationist one knows why the GOP avoided the 2008 Science Debate.
Colin Walls, Gee Cross, UK
Let's get this right - she's an anti-abortion, gun-toting creationist. Where did McCain find her - 1928?
Rick Pearson, Auckland, New Zealand
Isabel from Hull,
"Who will take care of her Down's syndrome baby?"
The baby's father will co parent perhaps?
Maureen, State College, USA
I was in the audience at the Nutter Center when McCain introduced her. She came across as a Lady who is at ease with politics. Her Kids were there, just a normal family. At least she can wear a skirt not an orange pants suit. Great choice John.
tom, Pleasant Hill, Ohio , USA
I'm a moderate female voter who voted for Hillary in the primaries. While I don't agree with all of Palin's views, from what I've read her religious views are far more to the right than her more centerist, ethics driven voting record. A brilliant move by McCain, IMHO. Checkmate, Obama? Biden who?
alice, salado, tx/us
She is the anti-Hillary, ultra right wing, lacks experience, (mayor of small town is not national prep, nor is being governor of a low populated arctic state for 2 years impressive) - facing corruption charges to boot. Representing women? A real insult to Hillary supporters! Obama here I come!
Laura M., Denver, USA
The most common complaint about Mrs. Palin is that she lacks foreign policy experience. Well, so do may other candidates. Give the lady a chance!
Mary Witherspoon, New York, NY, USA
I find this to be humourously ironic for a campaign whose strongest criticism of its opponent was his inexperience.
Two years governing a state with 8% of the population of New York City doesn't lend much political credibility, but it sure raises the profile of McCain's campaign. He needed that.
Eric, Laguna Niguel, California, USA
Good choice --I don't trust Obama. He should have stuck with
Clinton--it was a shoe in.Best of luck.
An Aussie.
Brian Dunn, Perth, Australia
Yeah !! Palin rocks !! A real American woman in politics that does'nt have a chip on her shoulder. Obama and demies are SCARED. check out hillary clinton forums --guess who they are voting for? You want change? heres change- slapped Obama down!! I can;t even tell you how excited I am about this pic
Greg, Wrightsville bch , NC, USA
What a great pick! My wife was beside herself praising McCain for selecting her.
Anyone who's favorite designers are Patagonia and North Face is ok by me.
Scott, Durham, NC, USA
Isn't it a bit hypocritical that he's chosen her after saying Obama hasn't enough experience? What a stupid decision by McCain.
Dave Washington, Cork, Ireland
Great choice. Actually, before she was elected as Governor of Alaska, she was an elected Mayor when Obama was a 'community organiser' - whatever that is - and whichever way you measure it, she has more experience in more areas than anything to be found in the Obama campaign.
Albert Ross, Romford, UK
Wonderful choice. My personal beliefs are that a woman is much stronger and gritty. She if she believes in what is in her mind and heart will never be waved nor to alter her decesion and if by chance President McCain passes away then she will have her cabinet. Mr. McCain is going now-where .
Sgt. Peter M. Ranoia USMC, Nottingham, Penna, USA
In certain quarters of the Republican grassroots, she has been discussed for VP for well over a year now, as executive of by far the largest state in square miles, by far the richest in mineral resources, and the only one bordering on two other countries, one being Russia 3 miles away by water.
Laura, Boston, USA
I've lived in the USA all my life. I have purchased a baseball cap and T-shirt that says, "Canada." I'm practicing my accent. If this country elects McCaine and a vice-presidential candidate with only a veneer of qualification, I'm heading north. Although she can articulate a complete sentence.
Don Guizzetti, Denver, Colorado, USA
It would be nice if America took responsibility for all the resources it uses and all the mess it dump into the environment. They are now planning to vastly increase their population by immigration and by insisting that every baby be born. After all an American baby is worth more than anyone else
Harold , Norwich, UK
I wish that my comment makes it as the 100th!!!
If McCain Grandpa wins, America will be insulted, kicked, beaten up and run over by every country in the world. Russia is already doing that and setting up an example to other countries.
Americans will beg for food and shelter.
Uma Shankar, UK,
I supported Hillary and can't believe Sarah Palin was chosen to appeal to me, she is against a woman's right to choose, against gay rights, is for the war in Iraq and supported Pat Buchanan for President in 2000...historic, in a way, but won't attract many Hillary supporteres
Paul, Seattle, USA
I must say I find the hysterical screaming at American ploitical rallies extremely vulgar and distasteful- like American so-called culture I suppose
peter c, Devizes, Wessex
"shake up Washington'! Are you kidding me? McCrazy has been part of the Senate furniture for 20 year! It's spent old cronies like him that need "shaking up" and shipping out or we're all going to Hell in a rollercoaster.
Andrew, Godalming, UK
Considering all the drones who have been in the Congress for umteen years like Mr Biden and have accomplished nothing to speak of, Mrs. Palen may just the ticket for a real change that O'Bama preaches. After all what change can O'Bama claim when he selects a bitter tongued political hack.
RObert Craciun, Walnut Creek, California , USA
I am quite puzzled how the 'intellectually lazy' republicans can continuously attempt to besmirch the character of Obama by haranguing on about experience. These ADHD befoulers seem to have forgotten their own current 'leader' who has a much worse record of employment.
james R. , Sacramento,
A horror. A lunatics mad choice . He has treated America with disdain and disrespect. The same way McInsane is lost about his personal property is reflected in this careless mad selection of a VP. Also , I dont trust her. Mother of a 4 month old baby running for VP? Values?
Katherine, London, UK
Palin is a first-term governor and Obama is a first-term senator -- so don't call Palin inexperienced unless you are going to call Obama inexperienced as well.
JJ, new york, usa
If you would d like to see and hear Sarah Palins great introductory speech, done extemporaneously, (that means WITHOUT a Obamaprompter) search Youtube for: McCain-Palin Rally in Dayton, Ohio.
Charles, Houston, USA
Mrs. Palin isn't running for President. She is running for Vice President. Those of you who are pointing out her alleged inexperience would be wise to realize this woman has vastly more experience as the Chief Executive of a soverign US State as opposed to Mr. Obama's limited Senatorial resume.
Chad Bradbury, Austin, Texas, USA
What talent does it take to become Number One in the Democrat ticket? Obama has no experience at all, not even an hour of executive power, and yet no one is screaming about it?
And as for Biden he has a lot of experience in plagiarism, but no one cares!Of course, they are men.....!!!
Teresa, Morelia, Mexico
Eight years ago American went for a relatively inexperienced governor from a "pioneer" state because they thought he was a "good guy" and a "refreshing change from the same old Washington insiders." He'd "learn on the job." Well, it's the USA that learned the lesson and the whole world suffered.
Harold Levine, New York, NY
Again..this will make America the laughing stock of the world...since american voters are too stupid to look beyond this political trick...
c, Annapolis,MD, USA
Alaska has the population of a medium size city, and the town in which she was Mayor only 5000 people. Pretty much a village by US standards.
So hardly anything to get excited about, plus the ethical nonsense sprouting from family affairs suggests a certain lack of professionalism.
Adrian Tysoe, Sacramento, CA, USA
Poor Americans, nobody will be able to pursuit an abortion. I respect Sarah becuase she can afford a nanny, but not that she loves hunting, defends death penalty and wants to impose creationism at schools. And what about alolwing companies to search for oil and gas in Alaska to destroy it.
ana, london,
Saw her interview. She is ready to help Alaskans, espcially when it comes to oil. They get to distribute the money from gas energy amongst themselves. She spoke of her incredible knowledge on anwar. But she also was on the committee for 12 years. As for the rest of the country she hasn't a clue.
Mary, Lincoln Park, USA
Nice headline, -'inexperienced mom'. Do you refer to Obama as an 'inexperienced father'? Her experience is very comparable to that of Obama, and she is on the bottom of the ticket. Her executive experience is far greater than that of the Obamassiah.
Kevin Finnerty, Atlanta, USA
Fascinating. I don't know much about this lady but from other comments she seems to have some business and political experience and "clean hands", so to speak. Tactically, if McCain were to win but only serve one term, would Mrs Palin be the Republican candidate in 2012 to take on Hillary Clinton?
David in London, London,
So. What talent does it take to become VP? Remember our VP under T B'Liar. Cabin boy John Prescott. An affair,a fight, then playing games when the cat was away. At least it seems that the American has a more stable life than Dear John. Do we have a VP now under Gordy ?
Geoff, Manchester, England
A simple method of committing political suicide has never looked easier.
Cynical, cheap, irresponsible.
Bryan Stanion, Aghios Nikolaos, Crete, Greece
I wouldn't hold her inexperience against her, as "experience" in Washington seems to mean knowing all the fiddles, having lots of dubious contacts, and ensuring your cronies get all the lucrative defence contracts. Ability is irrelevant. A fresh face with inexperience would be a welcome change.
Chris K, Cheltenham, UK
As a woman, I have a natural mistrust for women in politics: good looks or not, there is something evil in politics called 'Power hunger' regardless of the sex. I wonder who will take care of her Down syndrome baby. Having one such kid in my family, I know it's a 24 hours job! Glad I am not American
Isabel, Hull, U.K.
Obama - a man with no executive experience, very little experience of anything else besides dirty chicago politics - yet all the disciples believe he is ready for command and belittle the experience of the governor of Alaska, a woman, saying she is not ready. no wonder hillary supporters are mad.
Fiona, NY, USA
If Sarah Palin has the guts and the grit to stand up for what is the right thing for the people, more power to her. We seriously need someone in the White House that will get rid of the good ole boys mentality. It is time to fight for the people and not for what it can do for them personally.
Jane, Myrtle Beach, USA
Looks like McSames argument "not ready to lead" and "too inexperienced" just went down the toilet. She is anti-corruption? Republicans must truly be desperate. Biden will eat her alive. Can't wait. The American woman voters are not stupid.
M.J., Iowa, U.S.A.
The funny thing is that she has more experience actually running a government (or anything else) than Obama, Biden, and McCain combined. I love it!
Michael, Dallas, USA
Running the great state of Alaska as governor is heads above Obama who has a record of ??????
Mike, Washington State, USA
She is seductive.
Lot of men will vote for her, kuz they dream to have her as a wife.
Lot of women will do so, kuz they want to be at her place ...
Jean-Pierre PETIT, Paris, France
2 years doing a job as complicated as Alaska Governor (fighting pork and grand corruption as well as dealing with Russia over fishing and oil) is worth a lot, lot more than Obama's rather measly 4 in the Senate in which he seems never to have taken a principled stand on anything.
Adam Johns, Cardiff, UK
Wow, it doesn't get better than this! May the best man or woman win.
Peter , Bishops Stortford, UK
Inexperienced?
She, the Republican Vice Presidential candidate, has more experience than the Democrats Presidential candidate.
Who had heard of Obama before he put himself forward?
Obama is a triumph of wishful thinking over substance.
Geoff M, Birmingham, England
I love the choice of Sarah. She has both a family and a career.
Lia, Columbia, USA
Obama is repeating every day, he is not a muslim.
Does this means, a muslim has no single chance to become a US president ??
Jean-Pierre PETIT, Paris, France
A scary political move to make McCain palatable to a middle America in denial about the hard changes they have to make. Scary because it just might work.
cam , Sydney, Australia
We really must consider what Americal would do when he dies in office! It's a sad but very true reality He is the oldest nominee like EVER! the USA would go into absolute mealt down if left to Palin!
Choosing a woman was a tactical attempt to pick up female voters but American woman are smarter
Charles, manchester, UK
I'm so please that McCain has chosen a VP candidate, Sarah Palin, who is known for her integrity and honesty to stand for the common good of this country. That is what we need in Washington today!
I do hope that we will vote for John McCain as the next president of the U.S.A. comes November 0f 2008
Ederlina Vega, Maryland, U.S.A.
She has executive experience and more of a record of producing improvements in government than either Sen. Obama or Biden. She wouldn't have been my pick, but I'm willing to see what she has to say. Sen. McCain is still way more ready than Sen. Obama to be President. He is the person I'll vote for.
Jill, Pittsburgh, PA, USA
this is an old man with an inexperienced woman who is a heart beat from the white house
god help the us
SAUD, riyadh, saudi arabia
McCain Republicans are really promoting Sarah Palin's 80% approval rating in Alaska. What they are not saying is Alaska's population is only 670,053 (2006 census), meaning only 536,042 approve of her. That is 0.179% of the US population, which is not even the population of Portland, OR (537,081)!
Jimmy C, Letchworth Garden City, UK
I'm afraid I find her frighteningly awful. I can think of nothing to say in her favour. I wasn't sure about Obama but I'll be hoping for a Democratic victory just to keep this irresponsible woman well away from the white House.
PAUL, Durham, Great Britain.
Obama voted over 100 times as "present" in the Illinois state senate, Experience, Change? I don't see it. He couldn't stand on an issue with any substance. His speaches have directly contradicted his stances from his website. McCain is sticking to his guns brings an outsider to DC, outstanding.
Rich, Atlanta, USA
Let's see how many gay and lesbian republicans and their families, how many women who had to abort a child and how many environmentalists are going to be pleased by the choice of Mrs Palin as McCain's running mate.
Bee, London, UK
Hmm, as a voting American, I am embarrassed by the last eight years of the Bush administration. Give me a president that understands the BIG problems that are not being addressed by the Republicans, and give me a vice president who can lead the nation, if necessary. Obama & Biden are the choice!
Mary Jo Gibson, Rockford, USA
This VP choice is further evidence that McSame and the republicans are clueless when it comes to women voters, particularly those who supported Hillary. It is cynical and an insult to the intelligence of American women....John, you just don't get it! Worse, it is down right reckless!
Pat, Vermont, USA
I'm an Englishman who thought McCain would win the
presidential election, now having chosen Sarah Palin l'm
even more sure McCain will win. The US & the UK needs
McCain-Palin at this difficult time in world history. Maybe
Obama or Hillary Clinton in 2012?
Roger, Weymouth, England
Les Jones, Surbiton, you forget "nepotist" (see Clive, Dartford's comment). Though I agree she's beautiful. Watch the American divorce rate shoot up!
Pierre Bernardi, Paris, France
Palin has more executive expierence than Obama does and you can tell this choice shakes things up becuase of the strident attackes on her by the opposition.
She must be a good choice because even the Times described her as "Inepierenced".
George Davis, Detroit, USA
Palin-started on school board, then city council, then mayor, then govenor
Obama- community activist, state legislator, pals with weather underground terrorists and Chicago corrupt pol fixers
Biden- 35 years as legislator not leader
Palin has moreexecutive leadership than both dems
good call
Robert, Dayton, ohio, USA
Obama despite his divine origins has never run so much as a lemonade stand. So we might as well say an experienced man is just one heart-beat away from the Presidency.
As for Governor (if you please) Palin, she reminds me of another political nobody, Harry Truman. Give 'em hell, Sarah!
Charles, USA,
Obama has got to be nominee not in spite of his colour, but because of it. Equally Palin has got on McCain's ticket not in spite of her sex, but because of it. Maybe that is a good thing, maybe not, but it is clearly the case.
Susan, London, UK
John from Anchorage: You appear to be one of the 16% in your state who do NOT think she is doing a good job. That's a pretty small minority.
Robert from Brisbane: What is your disdainful attitude towards American women predicated upon? The old Guess Who song? How shallow.
Kate, Maryland, USA
Bad choice. I believe Palin would attack Iran. Being a hunter, she wouldn't shy slinging her guns on Tehran. Neo-cons are setting US up for war with Ayatollahs. Sarah Palin might be just the woman to do that. I think US will be in guagmire once again. I can see bad times ahead for US.
Alan Smith, Manchester, UK
When I saw that McCain had chosen "Palin" as his VP, I hoped for a moment that it might be Michael Palin. This would have injected some much needed fun into the McCain campaign and, being a very nice man, he would have been no less electable than the gun-toting governor of Alaska.
Stephen Nelson, Le Mesnil-le-Roi, France
Picking Sarah Palin was a stroke of genius on the part of McCain (For my favourite-Hillary!) Picture this! The Reps. win Nov. 4th - the Dems. get rid of Obama - and in 4 years time when old man McCain is 76 and up for re-election-the Dems finally wake up-pick Hillary to lead them, and win in 2012!
Cate, London, England
The maverick strikes again! McCain's idea of Change in Washington is to replace the Big Oil men in the White House (Bush & Cheney) with another Big Oil man and Big Oil woman! Now that's Change You Can Believe In!
John McCain the Maverick? No, John McCain the Entertainer! Republicans are Fired Up!
Jimmy C, Letchworth Garden City, UK
I know nothing about the woman but her voice set me on edge.
leila, manchester, uk
Could it be that the choice of VP decides the election?
I mean if hypothetically either of the two presidential contenders died and had to be replaced by their VP who would you rather have as president of USA
1 New comer Sarah Palin or
2 Wise veteran Joe Biden
with Russsia and World econmy
Mark West, Glasgow,
Re: Joseph Wilson; check out her Wikipedia entry....Really??!
I wonder who created it.
Bolt, London,
If Governor Sarah Palin is inexperienced, then what does that make Mr. Obama? If experience is the test for the office, then let's save the money from running the election and have Mr. McCain take office ASAP.
Phil, Annapolis, MD, USA
Would Alaskan politics work as world politics? There is a big difference. There is little detail of how the candidates will change USA. GWB screamed "war on terror" and got votes, now its "we are for women".
Its clear that the candidates still think the people can be bought with slogan politics.
jack sprat, Bristol, UK
John McCain boasts of his experience (in crashing a jet?) but he is 72. Thats vulnerable. He chooses for VP a woman who is 44 and has no experience except that of being mayor of a small town. So which team is the more vulnerable - Obama's, with an experienced man for VP, or McCain's?
roger mifsud, Rabat, Malta
Senator McCain has delivered "Change We Can Believe In" with an excellent choice of a running mate with proven experience. It is better to elect experience with a young politician than no experience with a proven party line man.
Gene, Gebüg, Germany
The United States is/are an ancient superpower; willing to do the (very) dirty jobs.
With McCain and Palin we shall have - 1, 2, 3 - a team that revitalizes Vietnam traumas in public.
If you have a well functioning military-industrial-complex, while everything else collapses, why hesitate?
Peter, Berlin, Germany
Great choice ! Obama talks about change McCain creates it
I.Kemp, Nahariya, Israel
It is a very embarassing day to be an alaskan. Now the whole world will soon see what a hick we have as a governor. Happy 72 John. I pray you have many, many more for all our sakes.
John, Anchorage, Alaksa, US
Are they taking the Michael?
Gino Francesco, Hastings, Sussex
Governor Sarah Palin is under investigating that she abused her power in firing Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan. Governor Palin was angry at Monegan for not firing an Alaska State Trooper who went through a messy divorce with Palin's sister
Clive, Dartford, Kent
Why is the McCain camp reticent in telling us that Palin is a catholic. So will be bringing that bias into the White House and representing that church and not the people as a whole.
Chris, Ashford, Middx, England
This is desperation and this election is now the Democrats' to lose. Hillary fans - If McCain does win do you really think he's going to give this woman a role of any substance? Have you heard the way he talks to his wife?
MussieCraig, Musselburgh, Scotland
The Protestant Republican VP candidate is more Catholic than the Democratic Catholic VP candidate on moral issues. Funny old world!
Rosa Pammer, Brussels, Belgium
Cool! A 75 year-old "war hero" who graduated 895th of 899 at the Naval Academy, crashed 5 planes, and got shot down, paired with a "hockey-mom" with 2 years "executive" experience in the Arctic. Sheer genius. Anyone dumb enough to have re-elected Bush will not hesitate to back this pair.
John, Galway, Ireland
She is Governor and not a Mayor.
Errol Phillipsza, Sarasota, USA
Palin was not just picked because she is a woman. She was picked because she is Sarah Palin. She has tremendous political and networking skills, is a quick learner, a great executive, and would make a great figure head. I'm switching my vote to McCain now bc I want Palin to be the face of the US.
Matthew Rosen, Philadelphia, PA, USA
PLEASE - this is McSame's demise - a green VP who won't argue with him and will be buffeted about by the ligislature, she'll go home in tears to be a soccer-mom. She's NOT the all-American woman - we are not moose hunters or married to fishermen. We want to save the environment not pump more oil.
Rosie, Tucson, USA
Although I'm an ardently pro-Obama, Palin was a smart pick for McCain given her background, accomplishments, and articulateness. However, given her short tenure in office and the homogeneous state she represents, she simply doesn't know enough about the rest of the U.S. or the rest of the world.

Because we American women are so gynecologically united that we will vote for a woman simply because she is a woman. Those clever, clever Republicans.
Rebecca, Pittsburgh, USA
Its pretty simple. If US Citizens hope to restore the image of US in the world, then vote for Obama. Or if you continue to live in misery and pain, loose jobs, put more money to gas then vot for McSame. Choice is yours. Or you choose to play the race card its upto you people.
Srini, Herndon, USA
Another Reagan? Just what we need.
cmling, Vienna, Austria
How pathetic is this? Imagine some disaster happening to McCain and this woman becoming President of the USA? What a blunder by McCain! Of course Republicans are over-reacting by shouting from the hill-tops, "Great Choice"! Oh! Me? I am a Republican who has just see McCain lose the election for us!
Rod Garr, Miami, USA
"Dear Robert of Brisbane", An act of desperation you say? Was not choosing a 65 year old Washington insider, Joe "Potomac Man" Biden as his "Reader Healer, and Advisor", desperation on the part of Obama, or just an extension of the "Change and Hope" policy? What say you?
jim, framingham, USA
She has more experience than Obama. At least she has held an excutive position as Alaska Governor. Obama the junior has worked for the company for 4yrs and is now running for CEO. Scary isn't it?
Paul, Bucks, England
Sarah inexperienced? Hum-bug!
She has years more executive experience than Obama & Biden put together. She has far more military experience than they. By virtue of being governor she commands the Alaskan Army & Ar Force National Guards. B&B have zero military experience between them.
Dave Livingston, El Paso County, Colorado, USA
"Inexperienced"? That's a joke, as if the little Empty Suit that never had a job in his life, a product of the infamous Chicago Dem's political machine has any experience to put him in the White House. Change Obama's skin color and the lefty media that fawns over him would admit he's a loser.
penny, Florida , USA
It's an act of desperation, all right. The Republican party is so lacking in substance and direction; they're forced to try to follow the lead of their Progressive opponents.
Donna C, Franklin, USA
Palin actually has more executive experiance than Obama. If he is experianced enough to run the country then she certainly is.
Ian Bannen, Oxford, UK
Well, now we have someone with equal experience to Obama, and with better ideals.
Jane, Vancouver, USA
oh dear,, Mr. McCain really doesn't get it.
Michael, Doha, Qatar
An unbelievably exciting moment for American women! I have a renewed admiration for my state Senator for thinking outside the box and choosing Sarah Palin. This selection by McCain was pure genius!
Ana E., Phoenix, Arizona,
Check out her Wikipedia entry to see that this is a woman of real substance and tremendous capability. She's a brilliant choice, and the negativity comments from the democrats are out of fear that she is so good. And so now the republicans, not the democrats, have a great woman on their ticket!
Joseph Wilson, San Diego California, USA
She comes across as very impressive, straight-talking, sincere, a "non-politiicain politician" and has the highest approval rating (80%) of any Governor in the US. Also, unlike all the other candidates, she has real management experience. An inspired choice - this election will be close.
NBeale, London, England
Baldwin and Reid point out that Governor Palin is a former mayor. They're right, and considerably more impressive than say a former community organizer!
Eric Berg, Cincinnati, USA
Absolutely brilliant. Whether or not it she was chosen to boost McCains popularity is beside the point, she is exactly the kind of person we need to help bring America back on track. This is a woman who deserves to be president.
Martin, Nebraska,
A solid choice when it comes to energy and fighting corruption. No foreign policy experience, but state governors never get that. Still, better than adding yet another senator to a race that already has three. Bobby Jindal would have been my second choice.
M.C., Washington DC, USA
She ticks all the boxes. Intelligent, articulate, mediawise, tough, patriotic and beautiful. She is now the Female's best hope for woman President. I have the feeling she will be MaCain's best attack on Obama!
Les Jones, Surbiton, United Kingdom
This is the most exciting news I have ever heard on the political front.
Gwen, Brookhaven, USA
Absolutely brilliant choice. She's very qualified.
Nona, New York City, USA
An act of desperation that even American women will understand.
Robert Carey, Brisbane, Australia
fyi; no surprise to me; neither was Joe Bidel; however I thought Gov. Bill Richardson was the best choice
Walt W. Layson, Concord,Ca., USA
i do not see Sarah Palin could be a standard VP, it is not sexist, just i think McCain is just pick sarah as a tool to win over the original cliton's femal supporters.
maybe, sarah could help McCain to conquer the rivial, but could she do the same to american?
cty, hz, china
Sara Palin is this generation's Ronald Reagan. She has re-energized the Republican Party. She and Governor Jindal of Louisana are making us feel there is more than a chance to dominate the politics of America. She's what Barack Obama can only dream of being... a real leaders, not an empty suit.
Gregory Baker, Odenton, Maryland, USA
As of today, it's a whole new race for US Prez. Picking Sarah Palin as the GOP VP candidate is pure brilliance. Obama is looking more and more like a fading star as information is slowly being ferreted out about his Ayers and Rezko connections. Many are beginning to question his choice of "friends".
