Nothing ever dies on the internet. Rating sites like Am I Hot or Not were huge five years ago. They’re still around, burrowing into smaller and smaller niches, still finding an audience.
(Warning: Some of these sites include boobies, poo, vomit or emo haircuts)
Prehistory: Way back in 2000, Am I Hot or Not was the hottest website around – the YouTube of its day. You could upload your picture, and other users could rate it with a score from one to ten. A week after it was launched, it had two million page views a day. A few months later, it was among the top 25 biggest sites in the world, and it turned itself into a paid-for dating site.
The debased form: The success of Am I Hot or Not spawned endless imitators. If you have a thing, it can be rated. The top Google results for “rate my” are, in order: Rate My Boobies, Rate My Poo, Rate My Vomit, Rate My Ink (tattoos) and Rate My Teacher. Which gives you a pretty good snapshot of the interests of your average internet user.
Rate My Turban : That’s why Rate My Turban is a surprise – created by Ash Singh, a Canadian businessman living in Singapore who “noticed most Sikhs living outside India have a pretty boring turban life. I wanted to showcase turbans as an art form and try to revive the majestic roots of turbans.” He also wanted to help Americans understand the difference between Sikhs and Muslims. Since the launch, more than one million people have rated, and 1,000 turbans are up for review.
The Long Tail: The variety of Rate My sites is infinite. Rate My Rosetta is a collection of almost 900 patterns made on the tops of latte cups by enthusiastic coffee-shop staff. There’s Rate My Emo Haircut , Rate My Transvestite (which is so rude we're not going to link to it), Rate My Rap , Rate My Band (currently down) and, obviously, Rate My Kitty .
