Pulling faces: Brandon Hardesty is a film student in Baltimore with two claims to YouTube fame. He does re-enactments of film scenes – playing all the parts in Willy Wonka, for example. But his greater fame is as the star of “Strange Faces and Noises I Can Make”. It’s hardly necessary to describe the film’s content, but it’s been watched 2.5 million times, and inspired hundreds of responses, in which other users pull faces, whistle and squeak like pigs. And they say high culture is dead.
Double joints: More famous even than Brandon is Steve, aka Skater888, star of “DOUBLE JOINTED”, a three-minute film in which he shows off his weird shoulder joints, wearing nothing but jeans and a mask. The whole thing looks like a David Lynch movie or an Aphex Twin video, but with three million viewers. Inevitably, Steve’s success inspired a parade of followers, including Francis, aka Nullo247, a schoolboy from Norwich who can do strange things with his feet. The comments on his video range from “This kid sounds like Harry Potter! LOL!” to “You might have a genetic connective tissue disorder called Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome.”
Tongue tricks: For some reason, videos of young women with flexible tongues are very popular. More than 300,000 people have watched Karen from Toronto do tricks including “three-leafed clover” and the extraordinary “happy face”.
And the rest: It’s all here in the greatest show on earth. Boys wiggling their ears, girls going cross-eyed. People all over the world, showing off to help YouTube earn a little more advertising revenue.
