Get to know your phone – play with the zoom, the flash and any other settings or modes it may have.

Use your phone’s highest quality/resolution setting.

Think about the background. Do you want your subject to fit into the backdrop or stand out from it?

Try shooting pictures from different perspectives. Getting down low or approaching from the side can make for a striking image.

Extreme close-ups of people and objects can add interest and drama to your pictures.

It doesn't have to be dark to use the flash. Try switching it on during the day for close-up portrait shots.

The subject doesn’t always have to be at the centre of the frame. Sometimes an asymmetric shot will be more interesting.

Use walls or pillars as makeshift tripods if you need to keep your camera steady.

Don’t feel you have to use a wide-angle shot for landscapes – a detail of the view might be more interesting than the whole lot. Landscapes are often more interesting with something to focus on in the foreground, such as a tree, a person or a flower.

Break all the rules if you think it’ll make a good picture.
