A The older and more obsolete a peripheral is, the greater the chance that it will not work with the latest versions of Windows.

You could try software such as Vuescan (£20 from www.hamrick.com ), which promises to get some 750 scanners working with Windows.

As a home-grown solution that I cannot vouch for, consider the free customised driver download at mustek1200vista.googlepages.com .

Q In bygone days I used an old personal-organiser program called Lotus Agenda that has long since disappeared. Is there anything else like it around nowadays? Andrew Taylor, via e-mail

A There is indeed. A new freeware program called Chandler (see chandlerproject.org ) offers the same type of calendar, to do, event, and collaboration functions as the original Lotus product.

It works on Apple Macs, Windows and Linux. The project was started by Mitch Kapor, a founder of Lotus.

Q Is there a way to grab still images from my camcorder video footage? DW from Kent

A Try the Movie Snapshot program, which is free from tinyurl.com/6ma7cl. First you will have to transfer the footage from the camcorder to your PC.

Then start up the program, select the video file you saved and run it until you see the frame you wish to copy. Select the Save button et voilà, you will find a Jpeg file stored on your computer’s hard drive. It’s simple and basic but does the job well.
