The BBC today launched its long-awaited iPlayer, which will let viewers download shows to their computer for up to seven days after they have been broadcast.

Once downloaded, shows will remain on the computer for 30 days, at which point they will be deleted.

A spokeswoman said that users would be introduced gradually to the service, with not everybody able to access it straight away.

The majority of programmes – about 400 hours each week – would be available, the BBC said, with blockbuster films, some sporting and music events, and other shows to which the organisation does not own the rights, not included.

The spokeswoman declined to say how many people signed up for the service on its first day.

Apple users have criticised the service, which relies on Microsoft software because it will not work on Macs.

The BBC's management has said it is "working on this," and has been asked by the BBC Trust to report on the iPlayer's availability for Apple users on a six-monthly basis.
