Video games are often criticised for promoting violence, but police in Mexico City are hoping that gangsters can be tempted off the streets by the offer of an Xbox 360.
The authorities have launched a campaign to exchange guns for computers and other gifts in an attempt to reduce violent deaths on the city’s streets. Large weapons can be swapped for desktop computers, while those who give up smaller guns will receive an Xbox 360 or cash under the scheme.
On the first day of the program in Tepito, a market neighbourhood known for drug dealing and contraband, officers collected 29 guns and gave out several computers along with packets of food and cash.
“Imagine how Mexico City would be if there were no guns,” Joel Ortega, Mexico City’s public safety secretary, said. “This is a barrio known for boxing champions, and now it has turned into a barrio where there were 32 murders last year.”
The gun exchange program is part of an offensive against crime by Mexico City’s mayor, Marcelo Ebrard, who has sent in thousands of police to tackle crime gangs in Tepito and other rough neighbourhoods.
The campaign comes as President Felipe Calderon has led an offensive and crime on a national level, sending more 24,000 police and soldiers to areas where drug gangs have been fighting.

Gray, I'm sorry you have such little faith in humanity. It seems that you see no solution to the problems of society today, and that we may as well turn our sites (pun intended) inward to protect ourselves and that which is precious to us. After all, the only legitimate argument for owning a handgun or semi-automatic is for self defense. I don't share you view that everyone is out to get me, and that criminals are criminals. There are very few truly sociopathic individuals out there who don't act under the rational governance of social behavior. The reason these kids are in gangs is not because they are evil and want to commit violent crime, but that the majority of them have little other opportunities. Whether economic or social, everyone has the desire to fit in somewhere. Gangs offer that sense of belonging. By giving youth an alternative to gang culture, they can at least attempt make a positive change. Who knows, gamer culture may even supplant gang culture in some case

P.S. - Without guns in Mexico, that'd make for an easily run over country. Best to keep some firearms for the safety of the people. Remember safety is best when used with intelligence.

Only a Texan would think we should have guns. This is, of course, where our wonderful Mr Bush rose to power. And look what that mentality has done to this world. Yeah, keep your guns Mexico. When you ascend into a first nation, you can use it to bomb your competition back to the stone age.
Oh, but Mr Bush is just following his "compassionate conservatism" mantra... eh?
Jason Cree, New York, US
I'm from America. We've had similiar programs in the States before. I don't think they did too much good. They might of did good initially but in the background those very same people that got the goods most likely got the same firearm(s) they had originally through the same illegal practices they got them in the first place. It's a great way to get something for free and even money in the process. In another light it could be considered highly unfair for those who purchased their computer(s) and XBox(es) legally, and for high prices. Overall, this is a futile event in the hopes of lessening the harsh crimes out there in Mexico. It'll probably lessen them for a bit to a while at best but after that, thing'll probably slowly to quickly get back to the way they were.
P.S. - Without guns in Mexico, that'd make for an easily run over country. Best to keep some firearms for the safety of the people. Remember safety is best when used with intellegence.
Adam Gray, Greenville, Texas
Yes, the headline does indicate Xboxes being traded for guns, very misleading!
Peter, Auckland, New Zealand
We should start this in the UK, or better still sort out the school curriculum for sports, and extend after school activities for the kids. When I was at school, available sports, music and arts activities where available, for most of the week. This would open up new doors for the youth of today, instead of letting them,( the minority), hang around on street corners, bored and ignorant of exercise, acheivement and discipline. Play does not stop at the XBOX or any other console. Wake up Britain Please
Peter Hagan, liverpool, merseyside
What a misleading headline!
I read it as gangsters handing over their XBoxes so as to be given guns.
