The Tiger Woods series has long been the must-have title for fans of realistic golf games. With a new version issued each year, the real question is usually whether it’s worth upgrading. The biggest change this time around is in the career mode, where you can train your own character. One new idea asks you to replicate historic golfing feats, and the online features have also been beefed up. A new precision-putting system will, however, frustrate and challenge players in equal measure. The actual rain or wind conditions of the course you are playing can now be depicted in real-time via data from the Weather Channel. These gimmicks cannot disguise the fact that the game isn’t much improved. The visuals need an update, the American commentary is annoying and small flaws such as poor crowd animations niggle. The Wii edition is at least compatible with Nintendo’s new MotionPlus accessory, which makes for a more accurate and lifelike experience. It’s still probably the best golf game around, but fans of last season’s edition shouldn’t rush to buy a copy.
