The hand-held edition of this popular home-console title allows you to perform well-known rock songs as a one-man band. This type of musical game is usually played with instrument-shaped props but Rock Band Unplugged doesn’t ask you to thrash a faux guitar or bash a plastic drum kit. The premise, however, remains familiar. You must play along with a series of songs by pressing the correct buttons in time with on-screen prompts. Instead of getting you rocking out with fellow band members, the game sets you the challenge of juggling all four elements of the band — drums, guitar, vocals and bass — simultaneously. This sounds impossible but it actually works well, and it’s easy to switch between each instrument during songs. Though the action grows increasingly frantic, it never stops being a laugh. The supplied catalogue of 40 tracks, which includes works by the Who and Audioslave, lacks variety but you can download extra songs from the PSP’s online store for around £1 a pop. While the omission of any multiplayer features is a bum note, Rock Band Unplugged’s slick and novel gameplay will keep the solo rock god well entertained.
