Grand Slam Tennis is the first game to make use of the new MotionPlus accessory for the Nintendo Wii. The device snaps onto the Wii remote and improves the accuracy of its motion-sensing hardware: you can lob and smash a tennis ball with a finesse missing from the standard Wii. You can even see the effects of using spin. This helps give Grand Slam Tennis a more realistic feel than rivals but is not its only selling point. Unlike, for example, Virtua Tennis, it replicates the four championships that make up the Grand Slam season. This gives your would-be champ the chance to face Federer on the clay of the French Open, or tackle Sharapova on Wimbledon’s grass, with their particular skills or favoured shots neatly captured. Also among the line-up of 23 players are past champions such as Becker, Borg and McEnroe. A series of “legend” events challenges you to beat Navratilova’s net play skills or Venus Williams’s serve. The tennis is easy to pick up and hugely enjoyable and, aside from some visual rough edges and the need to buy the MotionPlus (at about £15, or bundled with the game for a total of £50), it’s ace.
