Tiger Woods may have slipped from top spot on the big green, but on the small screen he’s still way ahead. The latest version of EA’s bestselling Tiger-endorsed golf sim impresses through its glorious graphics and extensive array of choices.
The game has five difficulty settings, so even newcomers can enjoy completing the courses. On the easiest settings, the player has to do little more than aim shots and whack the ball, but on the harder settings more sophisticated techniques are needed to take into account the effects of drizzling rain or side-sweeping winds.
Developed by Headgate Studios, PGA Tour 2005 has 14 courses, with eight newly licensed locales that are authentically realised, including Sherwood Country Club and Troon North. The two console versions also boast Coeur d’Alene and Colonial Country Club, although why these are omitted from the PC version is a mystery. There are also a few fantasy courses thrown in for good measure.
One of the biggest additions to PGA Tour 2005 is the awkward-sounding “Tiger-Proofing”. This feature allows players to tweak the virtual courses — holes can be stretched, fairways tightened and even bunkers deepened.
The courses are stunningly handsome and the golfing action and ball physics are true to life. The game has an almost limitless replay value and should keep all cyber-golfers happy for the year ahead.
