A real Errol Flynn swashbuckler, this game is a water-bound escapade stuffed with swordfights, ship battles and a governor’s daughter to woo in every port.
Starting out as a fledgeling pirate with just one boat, you must earn money to increase both the size of your fleet, and your influence around the Caribbean. Once you board a ship, swordfights with the captain usually ensue; quick jabs and an ability to block strokes are key. The successful swordsmith is allowed to steal all cargo and either keep or sink boarded boats.
At the outset you can also opt to partner the English, French, Dutch or Spanish, who will reward success against their enemies with promotions that boost your standing.
The biggest non-technical development from the original version of this 17-year-old game is the new importance of social climbing. Once you are invited to a ball by a governor’s daughter, you can start the courting process, following your dance partner’s gestures to keep time and step. When you dance well your partner will offer snippets of information — such as quests or ransoms to be earned for capturing fugitives. With regular dancing and wooing, you can eventually marry and gain social acceptance. The revisited Sid Meier’s Pirates! is an evocative gem of a game, one all Long John Silver or Johnny Depp wannabes should thoroughly enjoy.
