Comment: GTA IV scares people in the same way Elvis once did
Rockstar/PS3, Xbox 360 (£49.99, 18)
Let’s get this out of the way at the beginning. GTA IV features bad language, violence and morally reprehensible behaviour. So does the Martin Scorsese film Goodfellas. Both are marvellous examples of work in their genre, and both carry an 18 certificate. If you are not old enough to vote, you are not old enough to get involved. End of discussion.
Not that I imagine this will stop the howls of outrage in certain quarters when the most eagerly anticipated title of 2008 hits the shops on Tuesday. The problem stems from the word “game”, with its cosy image of childhood play or winter afternoons of Scrabble by a roaring fire. GTA IV is not a “game”, but a brilliantly realised piece of truly interactive entertainment. We don’t have a grown-up word for this yet, so I’ll use “intertainment”.
As with any work of fiction, one hesitates to give too much of the plot away, but here are the bare bones. You play the role of Niko Bellic, an Eastern European migrant lured to Liberty City (a street-perfect replica of New York) by his cousin Roman’s promises of wealth and happiness. When Niko sees the cockroach-ridden hovel where his cousin lives, he resolves to make a life for himself.
This is where the intertainment starts. To climb the greasy pole of the underworld, his fastest way to riches, Niko must win the trust of strangers, building their confidence in him so that favours might be repaid later. The tasks he must perform are the skeleton of GTA IV. What makes it so splendid is the flesh that’s then draped across it.
For Liberty City is yours to explore. Steal a vehicle, walk the streets, help a friend or punch them in the face. It’s your choice, and as in life the choices you make will ultimately come back to haunt you. Early in your adventure, for example, you must choose between helping Roman or going on a date. Neither choice is wrong, but since Roman is your only friend, is it wise to lose his confidence? On the other hand, can you cope with the angry phone calls from your abandoned date, which come through to the mobile phone that is your lifeline?
As the contingent possibilities of your life as Niko multiply, you are in essence creating your own dramatic narrative. Imagine that instead of watching Joe Pesci in Goodfellas, you are him. Make the right choice and you might get out of this in one piece. Internet bulletin boards will surely soon be buzzing with details of other players’ “lives” as Niko.
But even a would-be gangster needs time off, and Liberty City offers Niko many of the same distractions as any big city. As well as its own radio and TV channels, there’s a comedy club, where Ricky Gervais performs a specially written routine, cinemas, bowling alleys and even an internet café where Niko can surf GTA IV’s own version of the world-wide web.
Despite its American setting, the Britishness of this intertainment’s designers shines through in the constant sly references, sharp dialogue and wry asides on American culture. Stop and study any street sign or advertisement, check the book titles on a shelf, and you’re not a million miles away from the hyperactive attention to detail that characterises that other fêted piece of British animation, Wallace and Gromit.
If this were a book, it would have “I couldn’t put it down” plastered on the front cover. This would be considered a compliment. GTA IV shows that it’s time to start thinking about what we once called video games in exactly the same way.

I purchased the XBox Elite for the sole purpose of playing GTA4; and it was worth every penny! I would love to see this game made into a movie.

The comment of the year for me in respect to GTA IV was delivered on the day of its release by one of our call centre agents - People will look back on this day and say "where were you when GTA IV was released"?
Although it is truly a legendary game I can't see it making the history books.
Ian, Nottingham, England
interesting to read how much people love the game when it hasn't been released anywhere yet! Still if the previous versions are anything to go by I'm sure it will be excellent
Tim Danson, London, UK
GTA IV Is going to be a very interesting game to play through, and no doubt someone is going to bring up the controversy involved in the game, as with previous installments.
As people prior to me have stated, this game is designed for people old enough to vote.. If you cant voe you cant play.
Simon Veitch, Donvale, Australia
I think one can compare this to a movie such as Goodfellas, as you obviously no little about how brilliant the entire GTA series is. It is subtle, satirical, intelligent and allows you to gain an attachment to the protagonist like absolutely no other game in history. Both the movie & game are genius
Nathan, Auckland, New Zealand
The videogame industry is with all kinds of graphically violent games and I've played a lot of them, but I feel I'm far more likely to go on a homicidal campaign of terror and carnage from watching another one of those bloody hair-care television advertisements than I am from playing GTA IV.
John, Aldershot, UK
The article doesn't compare GTA and Goodfellas. It cites them both as marvellous examples of their respective genres...
Joe, Cardiff, Wales
We will certainly have more controversy, Rockstar will be counting on it to shift more units! The UK tabloids have had a lot to do with the publicity of this huge franchise, all the outrage from Manhunt and previous GTA games have been a marketing masterstroke. Lets hope it is worthy of the hype.
Alan, Lancaster, UK
the comparison is only invalid because one is a movie and one is a videogame. in terms of quality, GTA is quite easily on par with Goodfellas, within the confines of the medium. Past GTA's have been as artistic, relevant and entertaining as any film - but for mostly different, gaming, reasons.
tom job, liverpool, UK
there will be kids 13 year old up to 18 who will play this and it will have absolutely no effect on their behaviour at all. Then there will be one unhinged 19 year old who plays it and then goes postal naming the game as a huge influence in his actions & a politician will make it a campaign issue
simon lomax, warrington, united kingdom.
Come on, please don't soil the name of Goodfellas by comparing it to a videogame in quality.
GTA stands nowhere near the top of the crime drama field like Scorsese's masterpieces do.
It's very much still a game and not interactive fiction. Cutscenes anyone?
However, I love GTA, but don't overdo it.
Kanja, Londontown, UK
One of the funniest/ saddest things about this though is i was in to pre-order about 2 weeks ago and i heard two kids there with there parents asking for GTA "eye v". Not even old enough to know roman numerals but there parents were still buying it for them.
RJ Forbes, Moncton, Canada
Quick, I need a good excuse to tell the boss why I won't be available for the next few weeks.
Howard, Manchester,
Completely agree with the article, Game looks awesome.
all those over-moralistic future complaienrs who criticeise violent games should take note there are next to no restrictions on bying violent books but you have to be 18 to by GTA IV
Leo, St Merryn, Cornwall , UK
Totally agree with the opening paragraph, im sure this game will stir up some kind of controversy when it is released, but why should it? Its a form of entertainment just like any other and carries an age rating just like any other! This is not for people under 18! Parents need to realise this, but so do the critics against violence in video games.
For so long, Video Games have been at the front of criticism and have always took the blame, its about time that changes.
Bring on the 29th!
Jack , Kings Lynn,
GTA is a revolution in itself. No other "game" I have played combines such openess of play with great graphics, unique storylines, cutting humour and freedom to roam. I bought my (highly priced) game console for the sole purpose of GTA4. Game of the year.
