Lost Odyssey

If you want a quick fix of button-bashing, buy another game. This is a slow-moving role-playing title from Hironobu Sakaguchi, the creator of Japan’s best-selling Final Fantasy series.

Like last year’s Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey is intended to boost sales of the Xbox 360 in Japan, the only major market where it lags a distant second to Sony’s PS3. If the game can repeat Blue Dragon’s success in that country (more than 10,000 special-edition Xbox 360s sold), Microsoft should go some way to recouping the expense of this whopping four-DVD title.

The game itself is a turned-based RPG. You begin as the hero, Kaim Argonaur, sent to investigate why the power that produced the “magic industrial revolution” is malfunctioning. The game progresses like a novel, as our growing band of heroes learn more about themselves and the power that shapes their destiny. The animations are magnificent, as good as anything produced by Studio Ghibli. Just as well, since you spend a long time watching rather than playing.
