Weblog: Do violent games teach real-world battle skills?
According to the popular press, players of video games are spotty adolescent males with no social life whose biggest kicks come from blasting the heck out of other people via the internet. Games like this, where – guess what? – you blast the heck out of other people via the internet, are unlikely to make the stereotype go away.
Still, if mindless carnage is your thing, the Unreal Tournament series does it more mindlessly than most, which, in this context, is a good thing. The battle-grounds are spectacular, new machines and weapons rejoin old favourites, and though the one-player options are repetitive, outwitting and blowing away fellow players online is a hoot.
So, if you’re not fed up to the back teeth with first-person shooting games, and fancy a bit of virtual slaughter, this is your four-star game of the week. For the rest of us, it’s a solid two.

For me, UT3 is the only video game...there is no other game that comes close to the versatility of game play. It's not about violence so much as about running around with your team and hunting down the other team...it's like playing Army on the block back when you were 7 years old.
I built a new PC specifically to run UT3 with an Athlon X2 64 bit chip, and 2G Ram and, of course, a hot of the press 8800GT nVidia card from MSI. The graphics are frighteningly surreal. The game play is infinitely interesting. And the people who play UT3 are the most crafty and cunning people on the Net (because they think like 7 year olds playing Army)!
