DS £30. Age 7+

Nintendo’s classic Zelda has finally swung aboard the DS handheld console, and has done so with great success. Slip on the hero’s green jerkin and pixie cap, grab his sword, then head off to find Princess Zelda. The game certainly makes particularly good use of the DS’s touchscreen, and all of the commands are made with the stylus: you draw circles to turn somersaults, for instance, or simply swipe it to slash with your sword. You can even scribble memos on the map to remind yourself of how to solve certain puzzles, of which, fortunately, there are plenty to keep you amused. The graphics are fairly simple and predictably gaudy, yet this simply adds to the game’s charm. The pace is well balanced and varies from gentle puzzle-solving to frenetic sword fighting with a host of nasties. An innovative title that is captivating and nigh-on impossible to put down.
