Nintendo romped away with six prizes at the annual Bafta awards for video games in Battersea Park, London, last night.
Of the 15 awards handed out by presenter Vic Reeves and celebrity guests, six went to Wii Sports, a game for Nintendo's Wii home console, which allows users to interact with the games they play via motion-sensitive controllers.
Wii Sports took the awards for best multi-player game, best gameplay, best sports title, best strategy and simulation game, most innovative game and best casual gaming experience.
It was beaten to the title of best game, however, by Bioshock, a sci-fi thriller for PC and Microsoft Xbox 360.
It was a poor night for Sony Computer Entertainment, the main rival to both Nintendo and Microsoft in the video game market. Not one game for its flagship next-generation console, the PlayStation 3 won an award.
To rub salt into Sony wounds, the only games on its platforms to be recognised were Okami and God of War 2, both designed and built for the less advanced PlayStation 2.
The award ceremony itself, at Battersea Evolution, was a relatively low-key affair. Reeves battled valiantly with a poor sound system and struggled to establish a rapport with the celebrity guest presenters, including the comedian Peter Serafinowicz, the actors Ashley Walters and Rebecca Ryan and the professional prankster Dom Joly.
The most muted applause, however, was reserved for Margaret Hodge, the culture minister. Her short speech noting the £280 million annual value to the UK of the video games industry was met with indifference by the assembled key players, many of whom have been lobbying the Government for tax breaks for the video games industry similar to those enjoyed by film-makers.
High spirits were restored by the final special award of the evening, the granting of a Bafta fellowship to the American developer Will Wright, the man responsible for one of the most famous games yet: The Sims. Wright is the first person from the video games industry to become a fellow of the academy and can now look forward to rubbing shoulders with fellow fellows Sir David Frost, Ken Loach and Lord Puttnam CBE.
The Bafta Video Games Awards are part of the London Games Festival, which runs across the capital until early November.
