THE CHURCH of England has threatened legal action against Sony after a violent PlayStation 3 computer game depicts Manchester Cathedral as a back-drop for a battle.
Church leaders accused Sony of “desecration” and said it had not asked permission to use the building.
The new game, Resistance: Fall of Man, sees a virtual shoot-out between warring soldiers inside a mock-up of the cathedral. Players assume the role of an army sergeant as a battle is held inside the cathedral, with troops shown taking aim from the nave.
Church officials described Sony’s use of the building as “sick” and sacrilegious and demanded its removal from shops.
Nigel McCulloch, the Bishop of Manchester, said: “For a global manufacturer to recreate one of our great cathedrals with photo-realistic quality and then encourage people to have gun battles in the building is beyond belief and highly irresponsible.”
David Wilson, a Sony spokesman, said: “It is entertainment, like Doctor Who or any other science fiction. Throughout the whole process we have sought permission where necessary.”

The CoE should be glad of all the publicity. Now, if only they can come up with a great game idea that brings their values to the fore, perhaps they can win back a few hearts and minds of the Playstation generation. They already have one thing in common with FPS (First Person Shooter) video games: the age-old conceit of Good vs Evil. C'mon Nigel, stop disdaining and start designing!

This is incorrect. Any shooting that takes place is human against gigantic multi-legged alien. Hardly realistic!

All I can say is, how many different games involve a church where gun battles happen. I can think of quite a few just now that i've played. The church is taking the whole thing way too far, if they do take legal action and win, I will be shocked with disbelieve.
Stephen Wilson, Hucknall, England
i'm sorry but the church does seem to be wholey over-reacting. For one thing in a good action game a player should not have the time to take in the views of every background since the whole point of a video game is to keep you busy and more importantly interested. For another, while it is sad the church wil have to face the fact that the type of people playing these games bar a few will not even register that it is manchester cathedral. The church is right to question why the fight needs to take place in a church but for one thing they are a place of refuge and for another if the world was overcome and the human race was struggling to survive whilst religion would increase in importance the houses of religion would pale and become insignificant compared to the daily struggle of survival.
