On past form, the launch of the PlayStation 3 should have provided a guaranteed quick buck for anyone lucky enough to secure a pre-ordered console, but eBay’s pricelist suggests that this time round the touts have misjudged demand.
When the Xbox 360 and PlayStation Portable arrived they were fetching two or three times their asking prices on the online auction site, but Sony’s latest console is going for about £400, £25 less than the recommended retail price.
The problem for the PS3 touts is that the console is still readily available on the high street. Delays to the launch in Europe allowed Sony to build up large stocks, including an allocation of 220,000 for the UK.
“This is by far and away the largest stock allocation for any console launch there has ever been in the UK,” Jonathan Fargher, a Sony spokesman, said. Microsoft supplied an estimated 70,000 Xbox 360s for its UK launch.
A spokesman for Currys and PC World said that sales had been brisk but that the console was still in stock.
Analysts have said that the high price of the PS3 may also have reduced demand. Carl Gressum, senior analyst at the technology consultancy Ovum, said the first buyers would be dedicated Sony fans.
“Those consumers tend to be willing to pay a large premium to get the new PlayStation,” he said. “That is a limited market so Sony will need to get the price down quickly in order to reach a bigger market.”
Retailers and analysts have suggested that PlayStation sales will strengthen throughout the year and are predicting UK sales of between 1 and 1.5 million consoles by the end of the year.
Those looking for quicker profits would have done better to focus their attention on the Nintendo Wii, a £175 games system with a wireless, motion sensitive wand. This console, packaged with five games, is fetching more than £400 on eBay.

kk san jose, think you`ll find it ws atari who had the first games console...not so much of a disaster i have a ps3 and its quality goods yet again from sony...not to panic as the ps2 if everyone remembers was an ever slower starter as the tech hike up to a ps2 was a bigger jump than from ps2 to ps3...garry, cumnbernauld, scotland

Let's not overlook the strengths of a giant. Who created the first gaming consoles and who have the most number of units sold in market. PS2 has over 100M units sold so far. So let's not simply overlook the past and give bit of time for PS3

Some people may argue but it is the end of Sony as we know it.
Can they really make a come back from this disaster?
Only time will tell but I am sure that it will take a couple of years to really reveal the extent of the damage.

It's way too expensive. Of course no-one's buying them. If you're tech-savvy you're put off by the blu-ray gamble, the DRM and HDCP, or already have some next gen kit as seperates. If you're NOT tech savvy you gasp at the price!
The PS3 is so far a disaster for Sony, the fact that there are low levels of pre orders and no people fighting to get them really underlines how bad things are!! Maybe in a year's time, with at least $200 off the price and some decent games they might start shifting.
A Brown, London, UK
I always thought that the bumped up prices on ebay acted as one of the most effective marketing tools for a new console! Silly Sony imho.

And with all the recent lawsuits against eBay maybe consumers aren't taking a chance buying from an unknown seller without any financial guarantees and they are purchasing from outlets that will back the transaction without any risk.

A typical comment from a sony fan. Sure the graphics are stunning but it's the same old games, just better looking. Nintendo have widened the gaming audience so much so that most people want something fun and inventive and not a polished up rehash. You only have to look at the PSP, it's been trounced by a technically inferior machine in the DS because many peole now prefer a more tactile approach to gaming and not a jack of all trades, master of none machine. The PS3 is the Suburu of gaming, overpriced and appealing mostly to people who want to appear flash and can't see flash graphics doesn't make up for shallow content. Shame on you for bying one ha ha ha
Ian Connal, airdrie,
I can honestly say, as an owner of all three consoles, I regret buying the PS3. As a long time Sony fan, I had presumed that the Playstation would deliver a far superior experience, but thus far, I'm underwhelmed. Sure the games look nice running in 1080, and while they obviously look better than the Wii, there's not a lot to set them apart from the Xbox. It's early days yet - but I can't help but feel Sony need to get something really spectacular to market if they don't want this console to be sidelined by the Wii - It's the real star for me.
Andy Smith, Oxford, England
well i have brought a ps3 on release day and i cant honestly see why anyone would want to sell one, they are really a thing of beauty and shame on the people who do not have one, ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
