He may not be the most impartial of judges, but Microsoft’s regional head of entertainment doesn’t mince his words when it comes to the PlayStation 3.
“In the technology and gaming there’s really little in the PS3 where I can say, ‘Gosh, I wish we had that’,” Neil Thompson, the company’s senior regional director for UK and Ireland, said. “The biggest threat that Sony has for us is the brand that’s been established around it.”
He conceded that the PlayStation’s graphics would give the Xbox a run for its money, but said that the Xbox outstripped its rival in the increasingly popular online gaming world, as well as in the number of games available.
“You have to have a range and quality of gaming content,” Mr Thompson said. “More and more we’re seeing that the online experience is a really important factor. Sony have come up with an online world that seems to let you do just about everything except gaming.”
Mr Thompson said that Microsoft had no plans to cut the price of the Xbox, arguing that the £279 price tag is already good value.
Sony has argued that the PS3’s £425 price tag is good value considering its cutting-edge technology, but Mr Thompson questioned whether the Blu-ray drive, the PS3’s high-definition DVD player whose complexity contributed to delays of several months, would prove much of an attraction.
“It’s two, three years ahead of the market,” he said. “People won’t want to replace their entire DVD collections, and they’ll get a better resolution with a standard DVD on an Xbox than a PS3.”
Mr Thompson suggested that the high-definition format war, in which Microsoft has backed the HD-DVD format that rivals Blu-ray, may be rendered obsolete by advancing technology.
“It’s nowhere near the importance of the format war between VHS and DVD,” he said. “The internet is becoming an increasingly important medium. Surely online is going to be the distribution method for much of the high-definition content.”
The 360 is better.
Andrew, Barcelona, Spain
ps3 is better xbox break all the time and over heat ps3 is so much better and online is better and dosent lag as much
charlie, doncaster,
Here we go "xbox is still better then ps3 even though ps3 is the next generation".Thats what bill gates always say. Ps3 offers a whole new new generation stuff.LIke the next generation of watching DVDs and the generation of online play and the most importand thing.THE NEXT GENERATION OF GAME CONSLES
Aditya, Romford, England
if you aint bothered by blu-ray then get the xbox 360. currently it has better graphics and ps3 owners just say that in 4 years time the ps3 will be superior. but i dont think its worth waiting 4 years toget better graphics. and anyway in 4 years there will probably be another xbox and nintendo.
louis, wimborne,
ok the situation for me is this,im trying to decide which system to buy ,ive read loads of these comments to help me and i just need to know WHICH ONE IS MORE FUN?! ok lets say im not bothered about blue ray just yet or the price, which one is better online)?
dave , stamford, uk
Louise you have no idea.... a blu-ray dvd player can cost as much as a PS3 and thats for a standard one. a good blu-ray dvd player can fetch up to £800!! now for me thats stupid, however if im going to choose between an xbox 360 or PS3, then id definatley choose the PS3, i mean your basically buying a great blu-ray dvd player and getting a free console that equals the xbox in gaming terms. AND what i think stands out most is the fact Sony offer their customers free online gaming...to me thats customer satisfaction, and gratitude on their part, not like microsoft who squeeze thier loyal customers for their money. That said i do think the xbox is really gd, jus where does it stand out over the PS3???
Oliver, London,
I don't own either of the two systems but I'm definitely leaning more towards PS3. You can talk bad about Sony all you want, although it's rather pointless. Both systems have their perks. If you are a true gaming fanatic, why not save up your money, (maybe budget a little), instead of going on and on about how one is not as good as the other. They are both good. But honestly, less crashes, less problems (3 ring of Death) isn't as loud, free online, umm what else Blue Ray! I caught a glimpse of some blue ray the other day; my girlfriend literally had to drag me away from the tv... Pirates of the Carribbean was playing :P
Right now i'm in school, so I'll probably hold off on getting either of the two. From what I heard, Halo 3 isn't that great anyway. Call of Duty 4 is where it's at. Alright well feel free to bash me all you want.. But I just think It's kind of sad how much microsoft is bullying Sony.
If you ask me I think Sony will blow them away in the long run anyway.
Jeff, Bellingham, WA
the PS3 may have more games but thats only because the PS2 was a hit with everyone so all the developers chose to make PS3 games. Xbox 360 is better value for money and if u want blu ray that much u can buy a seperate hd dvd player to go with the Xbox 360.
louis, dorset,
big liars
deen, boston,
K so kyle. I hate you... the 360 has no where near the amount of features that the PS3 has. To name a few off, Sixaxis, Dualshock 3, Blu-Ray [theres NO WAY a standard dvd could even compare to a Blu-Ray or HD-DVD... so that makes no sense] CBE, Generally all the PS3 hardware is better, and Tony... 360 only has 24 and ps3 has 48, you got it backwards.
since PS3 is a more difficult system to configure for developers, that means its not being pushed to its limits, while 360 has given developers a years head start. AND... GTA IV got downsized in everything, City Size, Kinds of weapons and whatnot, because the 360's engine couldn't handle it. The PS3's could.
Jake, aaaasdfasdfasdf, asdfasdfasdfasdfsdf
There should be no argument.
PS3 is by far the greatest system yet
The only reason they're making games for both 360 and PS3 is because the 360's release date was 1 year ahead and people gave up waiting for the PS3.
bob, Wellington, New Zealand
Xbox 360 is so much than Ps3 because the 360 has more feature and its a more reliable system
kyle sapp, Danville, USA/Ohio
No way is the ps3 at least not europe. Poor backwards compatibility and no price cut. Furthermore the xbox 360 is only 250quid. As for HD movie compatibility movie downloads not discs(blu-ray, hd-dvd) are the future. I just downloaded Disturbia of Torrentspy before its uk release date, it looks amazing and most importantly is free. Most importantly is the exclusives, Microsoft's high sale rate has forced developers to think twice about ps3 exclusivity that means GTAIV and devil may cry are going 360. Most importantly MGS4 is gonna go the same way. At the same time the 360's relationship with the pc means awesome exclusives like gears of war and bioshock.
As for the graphics Sony's machine actually does not have a very good graphics card. Touting a poor 24 shader processors to the 360's 48, and graphics comparisons on numerous independent sites such as Gamespot support this conviction.
Tony Richards, Coventry, E.U, England
People say that the Xbox 360 is the best because it's been out longer and has got more games. The playstation 3 has only been released a couple of months ago and I recon that the games haven't tested the PS3 power. £200 extra is bad considering the amount of tech in it. 2 years down the line ps3 will be proving it's price is worth it. The xbox (360) is a good console but will fall to the playstation 3. Microsoft will make a few different xboxs and the xbox fans spend thousands each in the next 4,5 years putting in the latest tech when people use it the most so they don't have to buy a console and then a blue ray for instance Playstation 4 if they make it will be in about 5 years ,but the ps3 already has all the tech needed for those years and the xbox fans will get annoyed with all the money spent on the xboxs.
Andy Litcer, london, England
PS3 is the best as it has better graffics and its spec is unbelievable, the 360 has nothing to compare with the PS3, the new 360 elite has only more memory but realisticly you are not going to need all that are you. The memory capacity is the only thing better. PS3 still s more powerful and hightech.
PS3 may be £200 more expensive but the cost of a normal 360 after you buy all the other componants needed to try and match a PS3 like a HD player, the cost will be more than a PS3 anyway
My advice to you all is to get the PS3 as now the graphics are a bit simular but in 2 years time you will really see the difference in class between the PS3 and the 360 like the way that the PS2 kept on improving its graffics. Plus PS3's online software is free unlike 360's.
Goerge Time, Lancaster,
This is all im saying..
Okay James marson is totally wrong because think about it. Resistance Fall of Man came out at LAUNCH for the PLaystation 3..Microsoft had a year to get the graphics sick. gears of war is good. but think of all of the games that are coming out for playstation 3.
playstation 3 is better worth the money too because it comes with blu-ray (integrated), free online (which i like more than xbox 360), ps3 looks a lot cooler, its interface is a lot better than the dashboard. and the games are better. Ninja Gaiden, Motorstorm, Lair, Heavenly Sword, Warhawk, Resistance, Metal Gear Solid, Folklore, Final Fantasy XIII, Eight Days, SOCOM Confrontion...am i missing anything?
and you cannot say im a sont fanboy cuz i own both a Xbox 360, and a PLaystation 3...i've actually owned an xbox 360 for longer AND have more games and i stil believe the Playstation 3 is a much better console.
Marcus, Richmond HIll, Canada
Look at the first games that came out on the PS2, now look at the latest PS2 games. Since the developers had time to get used to the system they are now able to extract its full potential and the difference in gameplay and graphics is more than noticable. The same will happen with the PS3 and XBOX 360. The only difference is later down the track when most games are developed in HD with lenghty FMV movie sequences (Final Fantasy XIII) developers will be wanting that extra space on a Bluray disc. Sure the 360 is cheaper, but think about all the little expensive attachments you have to buy that the PS3 already has onboard. It's gonna end up costing you the same as buying the PS3 and there will be wires going everywhere.
Oh and before you 360 fans get all fired up and prepare to retaliate, which console has been recalled for numerous problems. And surf the web, see how many PS3 hate/defective sites there are compared to 360. 360 is a great console, but its rep will kill it.
Tim, Adelaide, Australia
I love the Xbox 360 and i want to buy one. The only problem is i have herd rumors that the Xbox 360 crashes often. I have also herd a new debugged shipment was sent in march. Are both these rumors true? I live in lebanon, would the new shipment have reached lebanon, dubai, or Saudi arabia because i can get from either one.
thank you
Alberto, beirut, lebanon
What most people don't realize about the PS3 is it's not at it's full potential or even close, the game developers have to tap into the the amazing potential ps3 has, yes if you compare games now theres minimal difference but a year or two down the line the real difference will come out, and the blue ray disc for games on the ps3 will blow xbox out of the water. And what else most people dont realize is that more ps3's were sold in the first 4 months it was out than xbox 360's first 4 months
Joe, Bolingbrook, IL
if you got the playstation you wouldnt really have to replace your unless you want to have good grahics if you get a alien ware computer that would be better but since the xbox 360 and ps3 cost less the than a laptop or home computer i suggest you pick the ps3 and xbox 360 they are both good sysytems but the ps3 offers more like a home computer would be like they are just bringing you more to the playstation like a home system there is really no diffrence between the computers as in all the things i just talked about they are all the same sure they may use diffrent componets but hey they are all alike
DR, oradell, united states, nj
I think the difference between the xbox 360's graphics and the PS3's is minimal. What the heck are SONY saying, they say PS3 will redifine the gaming console and that it will rise above all expectations. I witnessed my friend playing resistance fall of man on his PS3 and in my opinion the graphics and AI in the game were not any different from Xbox 360's Gears of War. Therefore I would advise anyone wanting to buy a next gen console to buy a Xbox 360 and save yourself £200.
james marson, Wordsley, England
Hey i used to go for the playstations but now i might head towards the xbox 360 in Australia the PS3 is $1000 and XBOX is only like $300-$500 and if i got a PS3 id have to replace my tv and all that to get the best results from the PS3 so thats a waste of money!!!!
Nick, Melbourne, Victoria
I would say XBOX 360 is better. becuz Xbox 360 is more on the games and that what most people are in to consoles is games... PS3 in the other hand... they put all in Quality and Technology.. not the games..
so my vote is XBOX 360! PS3 is just a waste of money. SOme of the PS3 games are transfering to XBOX 360
JJ, Ooltewah/TN,
rite lets setlle it in a pole.
type 1 if u thing the ps3 is better
type 2 if u think the 360 is better
type 3 if u think the wii is better
james shankland, falkirk/shieldhill, scotland/uk
the inclusion of a Blu-Ray movie player has no relevance on the quality of the graphics used in games, it makes me laugh that there are so many uneducated people out there who think this. Graphics wise there is not much difference between the two systems, 360 does have the upper hand at the moment in texture detail. however it has a large advantage in usable memory, the PS3 uses a lot more memory for it's dashboard giving less memory available for games, which has all ready by mentioned by many developers.

I do love a good geek fight but guys seriously, at the end of the day does it really matter?
I know all the console marketing teams tell you that it does but I thought it was all about having fun with the games and enjoying the HD movies in whichever format you have?
Raul, Sheffield, UK
you guys better face it, its a microsoft world, the ps3 had many delays plus suffered from missing out on the christmas realease, in uk the ps3 is alot different also with many restrictions, so all i say is xbox all the way
sky, london, uk
ive an xbox 360 and its cost me £279 for console, £50 for wireless adapter, £40 per year on xbox live, this is now my second card, you add that add up it comes to £420 for an inferior machine that overheats and did i mention its been sent back twice nice now for cracking discs.
And mr. thompson dont know what planet ur on but normal dvd playback on hdtv is a joke, the ps3 is having an update to upscale dvd playback to 720p or i.
Do i feel ripped off yes, especially wen game ltd the retail store is only accepting £150 for trading it in.
chris, carrickfergus, northern ireland
I'm really gettin annoyed with microsoft. They seem to think they're the best thing that's ever happened on the planet. First they rip the wii apart, & now the PS3! They have some serious problems if they think that they're the kings of the world just because they made the worst OS & made a fortune from it.
Rob, Lincoln, UK
PS3 all the way baby!
Yep, Xbox360 is ok - but am I gonna buy todays technology or tomorrows technology?
Face it, we're all different - some peeps will buy the Xbox and fair play to them. I know what I like.
t, haha, hahah
The PS3 fights cancer though. With the PS3 having an amazing processor, and the 360 having nothing for comparison, the Stanford University project called folding@home is a program in your PS3 that folds protiens and sends the info over the internet to stanford. The PS3 will be able to contibute to cures of the worlds most horrible diseases and cancers. I would definately pay an extra 200 for a cure for cancer.
Anri, Chicago, IL USA
With Xbox being made open to the power of the PC along with my good old PS2 I am most sorted.. PS3 and its future here today policy also price will also make it a very long time to save not forgetting the Wii. Will what we use in the future have changed to make the PS3 an issue without using some kind of crude patch ???

andi, Tunbridge Wells, UK
well i have 3 ps3 games, R:fom, motorstorm and F1, played them all online, easy setup, stats, good gameplay, populated servers available, the only difference is its free. Still in question is blu ray, despite its definitive qualities, not sure its worth the price rise like i am not sure its worth £130 to add the HD DVD player to a 360.
very happy with my console having owned a wii and 360 already
Jonathan, Norwich,
I know I will eventually get a PS3 but not till after I get a 360. Also lots of my friends are STILL saving up for a PS3.
Alex Berish, The Dalles, Oregon
Why buy a PS3 £425 (with no games!) when you can get an Xbox and Wii and still have still have change to buy Gears of War?
james, London, England
Come on people... be serious. Not everyone has a HDTV... and if you don't have one then you definately won't see any difference between the PS3 or the 360. Secondly The PS3 has no online gaming functions at present. Thirdly the game pads don't feature any vibration or force feedback on the PS3. Forthly.... Ok so Microsoft are releasing a bigger harddrive. Lets face it most of the time you download demo's or the odd bit of media... and you delete them after a while. The larger hard drive will simply mean you can download and keep more content for longer. Personally I only play a few of the demos more than once ... the rest may as well be deleted. Finally. Look at the price of the PS3!!!! I'll admit that they do have some game titles that appeal to me but seriously.... it's not worth forking out the extra cash compared to a 360.
Oh but if anyone does want a PS3... check out ebay... hardly anyone else is putting bids on them and they're also still available in the shops.
Craig, Ashford, United Kingdom
I have been supporting Sony through the PS 1 and 2, & I boycotted the Xbox as it had nothing that appealed to me (I had Halo on my PC), but I have to say Sony didnt think too much about us when they were developing the PS3. Yes its powerful & I can see that in a year it will have amazing games, but what has it got at the moment? Their best games are MotorStorm & Resistance, and thats it so far. Compare that to Gears of War, Burnout Revenge, Crackdown just to mention a few. There are many great titles coming out over the next year but only a few are exclusive on the PS3.
Unless your rich you wont be replacing your DVD collection with Blueray anytime soon (each BR flim cost £25 ($40)). If they were smart, they would have had Blue Ray as a seperate player like MS did. Because of the BR player, we are expected to pay £150 extra for the machine. I wasnt planning to invest in Blue Ray or HD-DVD for at least a few years so why should I pay for it now. When PS3 is under £300 I'll buy one.

Hey James,

This is very simple guys. Xbox 360 does not have better resolution than PS3: it doesn't even have a HDMI port! (So it has to upscale rather than having native hi-def.) Even if the Xbox Elite has HDMI, only a couple thousand will be produced - not enough to change the market. PS3, on the other hand, has HDMI and blu-ray and can play hi-def native. Blu-ray supports up to 50 GB, while DVD-9's have 9.6 GB. This may not make a difference now, but when games get bigger, longer, CGI's get bigger, longer, and more advanced, the DVD format is going to be Xbox 360's biggest limitation. Think of PS1 to PS2's CD to DVD upgrade. If Sony could stick around for 2 years, Xbox 360 will eventually get left in the dust, although I don't actually expect PS3 to beat the Xbox until more games start coming out.
jon, Norwalk, California
I've got my 360 and played my brothers Wii and neither of us have any plans to buy a PS3 especialy at that price. Blue Ray is not going to big over here just yet for a ton of reasons, if it was then I can see a big advantage. But despite being an Xbox fan I have one problem with the PS3 bashing - with Sony being acused of a rubbish launch as there are tons of PS3s left on the shelves...What is the problem with this? It doesn't mean a poor take up, but indicates that Sony unlike Nintendo and Microsoft have managed to produce enough of the console and not set up a sell out.
Leave off Sony for now, it's early days.
paul rayment, leeds,
look at the history sony has always been able to come up with classics from somewhere in there magic hat. The game Begins When Sony says so. and now that they have said it There will be many more Classics like the good old GT-series and many other remember the days when GTA was new yes i am talking about the days of the good old PS (some people like to call it ZERO) it wasnt the best of all games but look at de fact the VICE CITY and Sanandreas were born from them which are one of the true ps games although XBOX has cought up the chunky and cheap remotes never did it for me there are millions of people who would tell you about the quality of sony and its un taterable immage now that new cheap rivals have appered in the market PS3 feals like sony is trying to ripp us off but the truth is that if u want quality u gotta pay the price and guess what allot of peoples XBOX 360's have stoped working and PS with 1 and 2 has never died on anyone unless you were stupid enough to open it up
jatin, melbourne, Australia
Another thing is Sony has made (what I think is) a bad habit of trying to make their own standard. It works to an extent and encourages (forces) people to buy other products with the same standard. I see how its beneficial for them however, as a consumer I find it quite annoying. Some examples being the firewire and the memory flash. Both of which were excellent for the time and actually incredible innovations because they were first ones to sell products with those standards however, neither did really well in the end. I have a feeling Blu-Ray is going to be the same. Since now most people use usb 2.0 and sd.
As far as a comparison between the two I think internet dominance can quickly change. Hardware-wise Playstation has the upper-hand with the Cell processor with a possible output 2 T FLOPs . As great as that is no one programs that much use out of it (not easy to multi-thread I know personally) so I'm favoring XBOX 360 and the xenon Microsoft-IBM (not intel) processor
Kavi Jivan, Blackburg, VA,
So does any of that explain the 70 people at the Australian launch?
The only thing PS3 is good at is graphics, and is better in that than the 360, of course. But the same thing happened to betamax, 2-3 years ahead of its technology AND no porn (porn made 1.7 billion 2006). Developers just can't cope with that kinda stuff and create PS2bullshit like eye toy. So PS3 has awsome graphics, but what games coming out for PS3 are going to be flagship? Xbox 360 is just enough graphics and REALLY EXCELLENT GAMES, seriously Sony is so stupid and I hate them.
Angelo, adelaide, Australia
Wii-360 is the only way to go. Got the Wii, getting the 360 this weekend.
Brian, Denver, Co
well every body knows sony is not a cheap brand so you pay more they always make things better. so thats why ps3 cost $6oo
jose, bronx new york, newyork
PS3 sucks! Blu-ray is a very stupid thing. I had one but i returned it because HD-DVD has better picture quality
FYI: it has 1 cpu & 9 spu which are useless unless u want to use it to run a MRI or Cat scan
its power was all hypeithetical. In reality it is actually really slow & sucky!
Jacob, Vancouver,
I'd say it's PS3 that has the best games and variety already.
PS3 Racing: Motorstorm and F1 are the best racing games currently
PS3 Fighting: Virtual Figther 5 best fighting game ever
PS3 RPG: Oblivion best RPG, and loads faster on PS3 has better graphics on PS3 and includes the expansion which you have to buy on X360
PS3 FPS: Resistance has gotten rave reviews and is considered one of the best First person shooters
What good games has X360 had since Christmas??
NJ, Phoenix,
i guess this thing limits the comment length so i will post in a multi-part. here is where it left off.
magazines quoting how awesome the cell is or how much better it is than the x360 architecture. A simple problem arises from these stats and numbers unless applied to the real world are well pointless. If you run the same benchmarking software tuned for both architectures you will see where the cell shines (brute throughput) and where the x360 shines (it is easy to tap its full potential).
Now I am sure since you are all on here you remember the PS2s launch. You remember what the general consensus was with that? Nobody saw to much of a difference initially and the game selection was wanting at best. But now PS2 has the largest library on any system (except PSone). There is a simple reason for the initial period of drought nobody knew how to take advantage of the power the PS2 had. The developers had to figure out how to work the damn thing. The PS3 is the same way.
David Reeves, Gallup, New Mexico
Jess from Lawrence KS, the PS3 is not fully backwards compatible either. Don't know where you got that idea.
Jordan , Vancouver, British columbia
The PS3 is far too high in price to consider, and even more so when you consider it is overpriced and under-featured against foreign models too.
Most buyers are buying it as the cheapest Blueray player rather than their prime game console, a story exemplified by the tiny game sales per console compared to its rivals. Without game sales it is a weak target for game developers, and without Blueray being a big market it remains a specialist device for enthusiasts rather than a major rival. I have a Wii and an XBox 360 already, and have bought very few 360 games but am looking at several Wii games. I had originally left the late PS2 stage to wait for the PS3, but with poorer back compatibility, the long delays, and the ridiculous console price tag (I'm a professional, but a mortgage comes first) I have written off the PS3 as excessive for the foreseeable future. Sony needs to not mess the European market around when it gets large sales figures here, or they will fail.
James Burton, London, United Kingdom
has this got something to do with these wi-fi's or ipodi-thingy-do-hicky's? No wonder I've just thrown my 5 year old mobile phone away, nothing makes sense any more.
James, Reading,
The XBOX 360 is so retro now. So 2006. It's time to get with 2007.
umopapisdn, Monterey, CA
Jad, both Sony and Microsoft have designed their consoles to be upgradeable. No-one will have an 'old' console because functionally, they will be exactly the same. The HDMI port is a welcome extra for XBox Elite, but it's not a necessity.
Sony are already down playing the 20GB PS3 in favour of the 60GB model, and soon I'm sure we'll see a PS3 with a much larger HDD, possibly 120GB (just like XBox Elite) or more. With increasing downloadable content in future, and some games on the PS3 allowing GBs of data to be copied to the HDD, even 60GB will not be enough.
So in future, expect 360s and PS3s with even larger HDDs.
Mike Thomas Mind, London,
I have every system except for the Wi and let me tell you, simply the ps3 is the best overall........
Walk into the Hollywood video and you will see that Blu-ray will be the next format chosen...........
Do the graphics side by side on a 1080P tv, and then be honest with yourself on what you see.......
Give Sony 6mths................
Scott, Cedar Park, Texas
Sony has already changed the PS3... see backwards compatibility.
Jess, Lawrence, KS
here is the last part....
It will take developers years to tap the full potential of the PS3.
I could go on but I figure I should wrap up so
I own both a 360 and a PS3 and have my gripes with both. One thing that I hate is the fact that my 360 sounds like a leaf blower all the time. The PS3 does have quite a moan when it gets going but it isnt a constant wind tunnel under my TV. I like some of the games on the 360 but they are lacking RPGs as well as many franchises (which is slowly becoming a non-issue). The PS3 is as of yet untapped and lacks solid titles (another problem that should be remedied soon).
All in all they both have their place in the market and will serve, at the very least, to force each other into a continuous spiral of improvement. You should all just be patient and see what these two gaming giants force out of each other as time goes on. It should prove to be very interesting. Don't you think?
David Reeves, Gallup, New Mexico
360 is where the games are this gen, and LIVE is great. 360 has better graphics in most cases. They say that'll change with the 2nd wave of PS3 titles (whenever that hits) but each new wave of 360 titles has had better graphics than the last. Games are gorgeous.
As for stability issues, I've had one system and have never had the slightest problem with it. These issues made a rightful joke of the 360 at launch but they've been ironed out pretty well as far as I can tell. If you're concerned toss out a few extra bucks for an attachable cooling fan. You should be 100% carefree as long as you take decent care of the system.
I'm sure PS3 will have it's moments to shine, but they won't be until at least 2008 sometime. Whereas 360 this year has Lost Planet, Mass Effect, Two Worlds, Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, Halo 3, Grand Theft Auto IV, new Clancy games, Eternal Sonata, Command & Conquer 3, Project Offset, Huxley, Crackdown -- and most of the games PS3 is getting, too
Brad, Jackson, US
Why does eveyone think that PS2 had no online games or very few. I have at least 10 to 15 games that have online play. Socom series, Tony hawk series from 3 to american watseland, Twisted metal black, FF 11, most of the sports games released for it had online play, the lord of the rings game, x-men legends 1 and 2, Metal gear substance 3 has online play, various fighting games like mortal kombat and smackdown vs raw.
What confuses me most is how eveyone pretends that PS2 has no online when it obviously did and you don't have to pay monthly or yearly to play online like with X-Box live.
This quote I found funny.
Its two, three years ahead of the market, he said. People wont want to replace their entire DVD collections, and theyll get a better resolution with a standard DVD
People won't replace first of all they will just start getting new stuff on blu ray. The PS3 dvd player does scale it upto your tv resolution so it will look better also with a standard DVD.
NeCromX, Philadelphia,
I have a xbox 360 . xbox 360 ruined my fifa world cup 2006 and my halo2 it left a ring of scartches...I can't play either game anymore.
the 360 crashes a lot i must say and it has a lot of bugs.
however there is a bright side to the 360...GOW
gears of war is the best shooter i've ever played.

It's now official! Microsoft Hate Sony! They've even taking game titles that were gonna be exclusive to PS3 and put them on XBOX360 just to once again beat PS3 financally like, Stranglehold, Lost Planet, Assassins Creed, Armoured Core 4, Burnout 5 and NOW Devil May Cry 4.
Games for PS3 like "Resistance:Fall Of Man" and "Motorstorm" look stunning and there's no way that Xbox360 is capable of having games like that. Mainly because the games would only fit on a Blu-ray Disc and mainly because its Microsoft's hardware.
The director of 360's "Gears Of War" said they maxed out 360's hardware to make it look and run as good as it does. And that STILL doesn't look as good as some PS3 games!
Give PS3 a chance, man! It hasn't been on shelves longer than a day and Microsoft's already bullying them!
Phillip Jones, Cardiff, UK
I really like the XBOX360 graphics quailty, espically NFS Carbon is incredible on a BIG HDTV screen. Nothing to complain about that.
On the other had what is really annoying is the noise it makes. It's like an old pc with a 10MB Hard-disk. Another thing that bothers me is that it crashes as soon as it gets a little hot. I had to move my XBOX away from all the other Devices (Satellite-receiver, DVD Player, stereo system) in order to make it work properly. What comes next

Jeremy: Where on earth did you get your information, It is common knowledge that Sony has the third largest inhouse development in the World, with 2200 developers across 14 different studios, it has more programmers, artists, audio techs and designers than Microsoft & Nintendo combined. Ubisoft is second with 2400 & of course EA with 5500 comes in first. Use Google & do a little research before you say something as fact when it's not.
You also go on about how much you know about the Cell architecture, when it's obvious you know very little by stating that it has only 6 usable spe's when it has 8 & 7 of them are usable. Also you say that the spe's have no L1 cache, well the truth is they each have 256k of L1 cache. I could go on but I think you get the point.
Perhaps you should contact IBM, Sony & Toshiba & let them know that the Billions of Dollars they have spent designing the Cell CPU has been wasted, better still maybe you could design a new one for them.

Microsoft got smart, they looked at what Sony did to make the PS2 such an amazing mass-market machine, and nullified Sony's advantages this time around. This time, Microsoft was first to market, will be able to lower prices quicker (and has a lower price to begin with), has more games, more exclusive, offers better dev support and tools, and enjoys a higher brand-awareness (than the original Xbox, not Playstation). Since PS3 games don't obviously blow 360 games away in the graphics department and they are losing exclusives hand-over-fist, Sony has its work cut out for it, that is for sure...

I bought an Xbox 360 last year and traded it straight up for someone else's WII. And I still think I got the better deal! GO WII! It's much more fun than either the PS3 or the Xbox 360.
Michelline, Jacksonville, FL
cd dvd hd-dvd bllu-ray. Disks r so last year. even hard drives with spinning disks will become a thing of the past (note the new hybrid HDD). PS3 is just over priced and the BLU-RAY feature is useless if it three years ahead of its time.

PS3 no better than the Xbox, says Microsoft boss
Who cares what Microsoft thinks ?, they not going to say anything positive are they ?
This is the first of a new FUD campaign by Microsoft in much the same way, I'm sure they'll have the "Get the Facts" but for PS3 too, like they had against Linux BTW: PS3 runs Linux).
Also, headlines like this. do NOT give "TimesOnline" any credibility, if you keep doing this you'll end up getting ta reputation like that of IDT and CNET.

You know I agree with some of the thing you all are saying. Although some of it is misguided or flat out wrong. Jeremy from San Jose is the first blatant mistake. Sorry Jeremy the X360 doesnt use nor has it ever used a Xeon processor. It uses a PPC core manufactured by IBM if you did a little research you would see that it is the same processor that Apples G5 systems have had for years (till they switched to Intels).
Toby from San Marcos yes there are a lot of technologies in the PS3 that are unproven. But if I think back to every Playstation release people scratched their heads at the technology that was packed into it. Each Playstation has contained unproven technologies that more or less became a bit of a gold standard. I am not basing this off fact but off people and the industries voices. So dont flame me for stating that as fact.
Majin_Boo from Tallahassee. You are right about one thing most people read the press releases that are simply re-written by all these gaming maga

Yeah, I'll have a game. But it's my ball and if we don't play my rules I'm going home.

Age old arguments. At least Xbox are giving people the freedom to choose whether to go HD-DVD. SONY are once again strong-arming gamers into going with their exclusive format. It's not future proof if the world doesn't adopt Blu-Ray!!!
Typical SONY.

Im not much of a console fan, Im a PC fan, but i still have my word on the Console war. There has been a lot of talk about PS3's life being already over.....How do you know?....The race has just started as Jad said earlier...plus the PS3 is a good value for money....it might be hard to belive but think about it.....9 processors...1 is a duo-core plus 8 single core all working at 3.2GHz.....in computer price terms...that is a £1000 right there.......then there is the BR-Drive.....which would probably cost you £800 if you bought one for your TV....plus HDD, and 8 in 1 card reader, plus Wi-Fi and Bluetooth......that comes just over £2000.....but the PS3 costs £420 and i think thats just the premium version...i think the basic costs about £380....AND MAY I ADD.....that the PS3 has JUST COME OUT!.....the real games for it havent come out yet....and when they do......then you can comment on who is going to do better in the console world...wait for it.....there is a lot to look foward to!!!

Toby your post is an oxymoron

The bottom line is the PS3 is way behind. They are losing 200 bucks per console sold and aren't selling enough to recoup. Anyone who's been gaming for any period of time knows that the number of consoles sold dictates exclusivity. Developers are going to make games for the console with the biggest base and then port titles for the rest. PS3 minus the Blu-ray would have been out last year and really gave MS a run for their money. They have fallen too far behind and the price is outrageous. Only Sony loyalists are purchasing it and that's not enough. What Sony should have done was make the blu-ray an add-on like MS with the HD-DVD. Instead they tried to get greedy and include the drive to jack up the price. Most people don't want to pay for something they aren't going to use. Bottom line is Sony is taking an L on this one and will be lucky to make it out in tact.
Derek, Bronx, NY
It truly amazes me that anyone would even consider a PS3. Who really cares about any next gen DVD format when you can download HD content to your x360 and in the future your PC. The whole thing with discs is an obvious ploy by the entertainment industry to hold on to a past in which their vast infrastructure in set up for. Meanwhile Technology moves apace and by the time the general public knows what Blu-Ray is these same companies will have gotten their act together and embraced the online revolution. As far as choosing a next gen system goes the graphics capabilities are IDENTICAL (See countless reports on this all over the web), as I previously explained Blu ray is worthless and the PS3 costs US$599 (more for the rest of us PAL people). Oh yeah I forgot about Games, I have two words Mass Effect!!. Anyway choose your console for the games you want to play no for alligence to a company of Sonys dubious history. For any Sony Fanboys out there that disagree please, tell me why love PS3?

Hey Toby.
What sunshine?
James, Worcestershire,
Seriously...I stood outside in the pouring rain (in New England no less) to get my Xbox 360 on launch day. That was about 16 months ago and since then I have spent countless hours enjoying next-gen games...all the while I read threads like this one from PS3 fan-boys talk about how the race hasn't started yet, the games will come, blah, blah, blah...for you maybe. But for me (and my online friends that I play Gears of War with) your "next-gen" is our "current-gen". Join the party already fellas, sheesh.

What sunshine? :P
Pete, Cov,
and dont forget the rumours about there being a new xbox elite edition which comes with a bigger hard drive and HDMI. if it is true, it means that all those people who bought the xbox will suddenly have an "old" console. MS loves to keep upgrading and sucking ur money slowly slowly. at least sony had the decency to give u an excellent machine with sufficient technology to last many years without having to change it. as for the games, they will come. it is still the begininng of the race.
Jad, Lebanon,
Although a little early to comment on the PS3's stability I can confirm that MS's 360 is already crashing after a few months of use and is getting worse by the week. I doubt that this is a rogue 360, so unless satisfied with my retailers response I intend to get rid of it and keep the cash for a system (which in PS2 guise at least) was at least stable as I've had my Ps2 for years with no problems. Games availabilty?, be patient these take a bit of time to start coming through and when they do the 360 will look increasingly like the poor relation.
Jim, Bristol, UK
Wow, all this arguing sounds like a bunch of computer geeks playing top trumps. Anybody for a game of football outside in the sunshine?
Toby, Liverpool, UK
Jeremy - no offense, but you reveal yourself not to know what you're talking about.
First, Sony's development resources are larger than both Microsoft's and Nintendo's combined. In terms of game quality, in my opinion they easily gave Nintendo a run for their money last generation. They had an unparalleled selection and broadly diverse set of games. A franchise like Gran Turismo easily stands up to something like Halo in terms of popularity (Gran Turismo 3 sold 13 million copies). Microsoft does not remotely compare in terms of having the same quantity and diversity of titles. Sony gave us everything from GT to Singstar to God of War to Eyetoy to Ico and much much more besides on the PS2.
Second, regarding Cell, I wouldn't know where to begin with your comments. Suffice to say, they're very misled.
Patrick, Cork,
I personally am not a big fan of the XBox, not because it's a bad machine, however arguably the PS3 is better, but because I am not crazy like some other US of A over-zealous patriot to kill competition of Microsoft by supporting Microsoft in all its endeavours. I mean come on guys, we all stand to gain with competition. So yes I support MS on windows...but that's as far as it goes.
Mark, NY, USA
If i want to play Online games i just hop on my PC. I will stick with PS3 because the shear volume of games they comeout with. How many great games did Xbox have HALO and what else?Yeah i dont know either. Im not even being sarcastic that is the only game that has stuck in my mind for Xbox.
Jay, Indianapolis, IN
I have read all of what has been had to say prior to writing this and just felt I had to set some things straight. For starters Sonys in-house development teams are no where near rivalling that of Microsofts or Nintendos and their IPs like ratchet and clank are not worthy of being mentioned in the same sentence as Halo or Mario, it saddens me that I just did it . Secondly anyone who truly believes that Cell is stronger than Xenon obviously does not know much about CPU architecture and should not be making such inferences; It only has one general purpose core and six usable SPEs which themselves have no actual place in gaming as they have no L1 cache and can really only stream sequential code since their shared memory isnt large enough too effectively create and execute branching commands, also the XDR memory subsystem and coherent EIB interconnect do not help games what so ever because games dont < continued >
Jeremy, San Jose, California
Actually your getting a great deal for a PS3. When you factor in blue ray and a 60 gig hard drive. Thats a deal right there considering the cheapest blue ray player out there right now is $800. Plus if you add on the $200 HD DVD player for the X-Box, and the extra $100 dollars for an extra 40 gigs of ram, lets see your actually paying $700 for an X-Box 360. Blue ray is definetly the future, plus the memory it holds, you cant beat it. Plus your already getting an established system and product in the Sony Playstation itself. Watch. In a little time, everybody's going to be talking about how great it is to have a PS3 and wonder why there was so much downgrading it in the first place.
jeff, Dartmouth, Massachusetts
James in London - I think you mean that the PS3 is similar to the Xbox, seeing as they couldn't COPY the PS3 a full year before it was even PRODUCED! The PS3 could possibly end console days. SIXAXIS? Oh, like the WiiMote? 20GB hard drive? Like the 360's? Wireless controller? Like the 360's? HD gaming? Like the 360's? Oh, no PS3 has 1080p. Except no games run it. Not to mention that 1080p hasn't exactly flooded people's living rooms just yet. BluRay? I'm willing to bet that in 3 yrs, we'll be saying, "Remember BluRay? Yeah, me neither."
Toby, San Marcos, TX, USA
Anthony, tell me something. What kind of studies have you done? Its just too funny hearing people state how great and mighty the PS3 is. The PS3 is a very good console, there's no doubt about that, but its not as though its the best thing since sliced bread. It has some games, but its currently lacking in games in comparison to the X360. More and more PS3 exclusive games are being made multiplatform. So far the graphics isn't that different. When arguments are presented there should be some kind of facts to support it, or else its all opinions. Where it counts the most (the games) the X360 has the PS3 beat. Walk into any store and see for yourslef, unless you seriously prefer the small collection of PS3 games. Stop being fans and stop listening to fans for a minute and try both consoles if you're a true gamer. Gamers play and enjoy games, what's there to lose by exploring your options?
Majin_Boo, stewy_gt@yahoo.com, Tallahassee
A sony PR said that they expect to have 200 titles by the end of 07. That is alot of games for a console in 1 year. All this sony losing exclusive nonsense starting to make me sick. Capcom is trying to get as much money as they can so they went multi-platform. Ubisoft making an exclusive PS game is unbelievable in itself. The only good games they made for PS2 was prince of persia(was that exclusive or timed excluisve??) Sony has a bigger in-house dev team than M$ & Nintendo put together.
Derrick, Summerville,
will it's good to finally see people supporting PS3
and yeah the 360 is the better buy right but i'm a big fan of sonys work from DMC series that is avilible for 360 now
to metal gear solid games all really fun but if i had to pick one i'd pick PS3 i really i'm looking forward to seeing the devolpers reach the max potinial like the ps2 GOD OF WAR, it really blows your mind away and shadow of coloses also great. ps3 is just a way better system
JIN, Houston, AMERICA TX
It does amaze me when people keep saying how the PS3 is so much better and Cell is leap years ahead of everything (though not in the same words for the picky). Where do these people get their facts? From Sony? Because Sony says its better? Of course Sony is going to say that, they're trying to sell you the product and take your money. There are a number of websites that examine the strength and weakness of both processors, etc. It would help for some people to do some research and stop being oblivious to the information that's out there. What benefit are you getting by being suckered out of the money you worked so hard to make?
Its alright if you're a fan of a particular console, but being a blind fan is like being a string puppet. As for myself, my 1st choice console is easily an X360, but I plan on eventually owning all three consoles.
Majin_Boo, Tallahassee, Florida
Blu-ray is ahead of its time, not the PS3. The X360 is cheaper and has a lot of great games. It has a number of great 1st party titles like Halo 3, Forza 2 and Project Gotham Racing 4. Plus a number of 3rd party titles. The PS3 is losing even more exclusives, the recent ones being Devil May Cry 4 and Ace Combat 6. Who knows what else is going to be developed for the X360.
If you can't easily see the difference in graphics between X360 and PS3 games, then what are you paying the extra money for? Is blu-ray that important? So far XBL is a more stable, secure and feature rich service than Sony's online offering. Of course I'd like to see Sony seriously give XBL some competition. Competition brings better things.
Majin_Boo, Tallahassee, Florida
My question is how can you judge the PS3 when you dont own one. I am a PS3 60G V owner and guess what i really like it. The fact about not having many games is because every game that they create is outstanding, not like xbox360 with the Burger King games. All i am saying is come on how can you even compare a HD DVD to a Blue Ray disc. The Blue Ray disc can hold as much memory as a computer making every pixel in the game look as clear and alive as possible. Siriously i have studied this two systems deeply enuff to come to a conclusion of PS3 being an incredible super computer with the cell processor. What else can i say.
Anthony, Houston, TX
yeah kind of pointless news that im reading ON MY PS3. although i do agree with the numpty that the ps3 is ahead of its time. which is good, people just need to catch up!!!
dan, kent,
Technically speaking the PS3 is better than the 360 by a far margin. The Cell Processor is so advanced none of the current games even scratch the surface of what it can do.
the 360 will CURRENTLY give you the best bang for you buck. If I were to buy 3 new games for PS3 and 2 controllers your talking a price tag of about $900 (US). When you beat those 3 games there is not many other good games out there for the PS3.
For about $700 (US) I could buy XBOX 360 plus 2 controllers and 5-7 used games. You also get access to over 50 demos for free to download from XBOX live. Muck better deal I feel
In about 2 years the PS3 will be by far the better buy, but till they build their game library and drop the price a little, you are paying too much for what PS3 currently has to offer
R Taffy, Pompano Beach, Florida
forget them, i want a nintendo wii - nothing like as stupidly expensive and way more fun! if theyd just ship a couple out here...
sam, farnham, UK
Come on Thompson, more games??? Of course X-box 360 has more games, it'sbeen our for a year longer. Same to be said about the online gaming.
He tried to downplay the Blu-Ray inclusion stating that the VHS-DVD format war was more significant. There was no VHS-DVD format war. There was a VHS-Beta format war, both introduced at the same time, and a muddied water, with an eventual winner. The advanced format/technology DVD REPLACED the Video Tape formats, not fought with them. Blu-Ray or HD-DVD will replace DVD, and likely only one of the two Blu-Ray or HD-DVD will win in the long run.
What are the TWO reasons that people choose the Sony over X-box... graphics resolution 9by virtue of the advanced cell processor, and the bargain of a Blu-Ray player thrown in for the modest price hit.
The game tally will catch up, the online gaming will equal out, and Thompson will be secretly be buying PS3 systems for his family
Joe, Columbia ,
Personally, I think that the PS3 is a lot better. I like Microsoft and all, but I think that Microsoft just can't beat Sony just yet. Microsoft seem to have a thing about copying other brands ... for example, Internet Explorer 7 (which I like) is very similar to Firefox, Vista bears similar resemblence to Mac OS X, Xbox is very similar to the PS3, Zune is copied from iPod, and so on. At least Nintendo has made a new system that's entirely different. PS3 is a brilliant system, has superior graphics, and is simply better than Xbox. I don't have a problem with Microsoft. I just think that the Xbox is too similar to the PS3, though less powerful.
James, London,
Ofcourse the head of microsoft is gunna say that. Its like asking the head of Sony if the PS3 was any good. You need 2 ask sum1 hu actually is gunna be fair minded.
P.S.
The PS3 is amazingly better than the Xbox360.

Honestly, does Microsoft's opinion here have ANY credibility whatsoever? I mean, seriously. Is it even worth reporting? What is the point? They're the direct rival for a multi billion dollar market. Show me a story where Microsoft says "Yeah acutally PS3 is great, and so much better than XBox 360" - now that will be something worth publishing.
