Amazon 'to launch Kindle in UK'

It has been reported that the online retailer Amazon is in the final stages of preparation to launch its Kindle e-book in the United Kingdom.

According to a report on the Mobile Today website, Amazon has handed the responsibility for manufacture and connectivity of the device to Qualcomm in the UK. Previous discussions between Amazon and UK operators, including Vodafone and Orange, have been unsuccessful.

Amazon launched the Kindle in the United States in late 2007. The Kindle uses mobile phone technology to deliver books, newspaper subscriptions and special offers to its users.

The Kindle 2 was launched in the United States in February this year, with better battery life, more storage and a clearer display, and sales have been strong, pushing Amazon's net income for the first quarter this year up 24 per cent, to $177 million.

Speaking at the time, the Amazon founder Jeff Bezos said: "We're grateful and excited that Kindle sales have exceeded our most optimistic expectations."

The Times has contacted both Amazon and Qualcomm, and is awaiting official confirmation of the launch.
