All types of video recorder are fallible. VHS tapes can snarl up or snap, DVDs can scratch and PVRs grow temperamental as they fill up. It’s wise to clear out old recordings once a PVR reaches 90% capacity, either by deleting or archiving to DVD. Most PVR faults are resolved simply by rebooting (switch off at the wall plug for a count of 10), and if it dies you will lose recordings. So, be warned. Don’t stack boxes so they become hot, and ensure your PVR is well ventilated. Even time lords have to treat their time machines with a little loving care.

What to look for first
The volume varies between manufacturers, but is minimised with ventilation and careful positioning, both of which also prolong life span. Watching one channel while recording another requires two digital tuners, whether one is built into a television and another sits inside a set-top box, or both reside in an external recording device such as a PVR.
DEDICATED PVR — Pros Watch digital programmes any time after broadcast; built-in EPG makes precise recording easy; live pause function; no scrambling for a blank tape/DVD.
Cons Programmes not portable; EPG subject to schedule change; hard disk temperamental as it fills up, with finite capacity, usually up to 160GB (80 hours); hard drives can fail, killing recordings; cooling fans can be noisy.
DEDICATED DVD RECORDER — Pros Archiving onto DVD creates a more permanent record; current-generation DVDs store two hours per disc at “normal quality”, depending on bit rate; can be viewed on a DVD player; falling prices of burners and discs.
Cons Confusion over DVD formats; older DVD recorders lack an EPG; cost of blank DVDs, especially if rewritable; discs are fragile.
HARD DISK/DVD RECORDER COMBOS — Pros Flexibility of time-shifting to hard disk (often 160GB), editing material, then archiving important recordings onto DVD; fewer cables.
