Alpha Mummy: Facebook needs to grow up
A mass online protest movement is gathering pace after Facebook banned some breastfeeding photos from the social network site.
Angry mothers even picketed the Facebook headquarters in Palo Alto, California, in a live "nurse-in" to complain about a ban on photos of mothers suckling their children that exposed too much of the mother's breast. Hundreds of women have had their pictures removed without warning and have been informed that they may be barred from using the site.
More than 80,000 people have joined a Facebook petition group "Hey Facebook, Breast-feeding is not Obscene" with hundreds joining every hour. More than 11,000 women from around the world have also taken part in an online "nurse-in" protest on Saturday by posting more breastfeeding pictures. The protest's organisers reported that many have since had these photos removed from the site.
Facebook has said that it has no problem with breastfeeding but photos that showed nipples or aureolae were indecent and had to be removed.
Barry Schnitt, a Facebook spokesman, said the website takes no action over most breast-feeding photos because they follow the site's terms of use.
"We agree that breast-feeding is natural and beautiful and we're very glad to know that it is so important to some mothers to share this experience with others on Facebook.'' But, he added, some photos were removed to ensure the site remains safe and secure for all users, including children.
"Photos containing a fully exposed breast - as defined by showing the nipple or areola - do violate those terms on obscene, pornographic or sexually explicit material and may be removed," he said in a statement. "The photos we act upon are almost exclusively brought to our attention by other users who complain."
Patricia Madden, from San Jose, had a photograph of her breastfeeding her daughters Zoe and Isobel removed from the site. The birth doula, who encourages new mothers to breast-feed, was photographed by her husband while feeding in the bathtub.
"It's amazing to me that we're living in a world where people are upset by this,'' she said. "You can't see my nipples. It's completely legal to breast-feed in public. Breast-feeding is completely natural and healthy. They took off the photo, without my permission," she told the San Jose Mercury News.
The live protest in Palo Alto, under the banner of the Mothers International Lactation Campaign, attracted a handful of mothers and supporters who picketed peacefully, armed with suckling children and placards.
It is legal to breastfeed in public in most states in America and in many countries around the world including Britain but Facebook's terms of service give it the right to remove content that it deems it to be inappropriate. Campaigners say that breastfeeding is natural and healthy and should be not bracketed with pornography. Facebook's stance demeans and stigmatises women, they say.
Heather Farley, 23, of Provo, Utah, said she was surprised when Facebook took down two photos of her nursing her 6-month-old daughter, one of which was her profile picture. She became of the protest's organisers. She said: "Where I live, I can breast-feed in public or private, and there are laws that say it's not obscene or lewd or indecent. If I can do it in public, why can't I do it on Facebook?"
Censoring such images, she said, reinforces stigmas that discourage mothers from a healthy, natural practice. Angry at the site, but not wanting to lose her online friend network by unsubscribing, she decided to take action.
The online petition on Facebook, which has more than 120 million members around the world, has sparked a furious debate with more than 1,500 discussion topics on the petition's homepage. Most comments are supportive but some ask why, if breastfeeding mothers don't like being censored on Facebook, they don't join another free site which does allow them to post their pictures.

you should look at the pictures that were banned before raising your weapons: most of them included at least one breast that no baby was sucking on, there was just a baby close to it or playing with it. Google it and find out
Facebook has nothing against discrete pictures (with a bra..)
Cécile, Paris,
I truly can't believe that people are likening feeding a baby to urination, defecation and intercourse. Yeah, they are all natural acts, but that is a ridiculous correlation!. A baby consuming milk is not an obscene or a private act. They are breasts, people, doing what breasts do. Get over it.
Jessie, Roscoe, IL, USA
The main problem with all the comparisons on this site is intent. If you have pictures of yourself peeing, you're doing it with the intent of vulgarity. When a woman is shown breastfeeding, it is with the intent of showing beauty. Facebook is run by intelligent people, they know the difference.
ginny, annandale,
What's silly is that we have to worry about this kind of thing in this country. I breastfeed my newborn, which is the best thing I can possibly give her. I am not obscene about it. It is giving life. Other countries are much more open.Kids got sick in China, and I'm glad I can fed mine healthily.
E, Marietta, USA
What really angers me is the double standard. Millions of shirtless men SHOWING THEIR NIPPLES are allowed on the site... we do it for a purely natural, beneficial, and non sexual reason and we are being penalized. I say if they can't show women, they shouldn't be able to show men...
Deborah Roy, Plantagenet, Canada
there is nothing wrong seeing a mother breastfeeding her
baby in public.I see nothing shameful ore dirty .
what did you do in the time of the stoneage?
sigie, LA CROSSE, USA
Perhaps the women in question should have paid closer attention to the FaceBook TOS before posting the images? Haven't read it myself, but I'd bet the rules are clear on what body parts one can expose. Rules are rules, and if you don't like the rules, then move on. This is silly.
Alan Burkhart, Laurel, MS, USA
Having intercourse is a natural part of life. It is absolutely necessary, and is in NO WAY obscene.
Intercourse is undeniably the BEST way to make a baby. It's benefits to the human population are tememndous.
Facebook is acting improperly when discouraging intercourse in any way.
Robert, Metairie, USA
I breastfed my little one.. If I did so in public then I took a Light blanket and put over my shoulder and him so no one would see and cause any problem. When someone is breastfeeding then when the baby is hungery you have to do it whereever you are. Especially if they won't take a bottle like min
Shelly, Okmulgee, USA
This is the reason we have so many young women who do NOT breastfeed! How Selfish!
God gave us breast to feed our babies, our bodies produce milk for babies.Breast are not just for sex.
The fact that anyone sees breastfeeding as a sexual, just further reminds me of how sick our world really is!
Tracey Anderson, Olney, usa
i've breastfed all my babies, and i've done so in public as well. but i've always used a blanket and a nursing wrap to do so. i have never felt the need to have to expose myself for all to see. the world does not need to see my exposed breast, nipple, and/or aerola while i do so.
G. M, Concord, USA
Breastfeeding is beautiful. I fed my three. But never felt compelled to show my nipples or breast to the public. A quiet place, a growing love, the gentleness of feeding without the distraction of a public throng. Give the child some protection and a peaceful time. Facebook shows sense.
Jen, ashford,
up tight people! the love beauty of mother hood lets enjoy the the praise the courage to do the right thing .
peter, boiling springs,
I breastfed my children, but never felt the need to expose myself. You can stay modestly covered up when in front of someone while still nourishing your child with the best milk available. It's not about breastfeeding, it's about setting boundaries on what's appropiate in public.
B. Whit, H'vile,
My children are legally permitted to nurse in public, so I will feed them in public. If you have a problem with how my child eats, stop looking! I don't watch others eat, nor do I complain if it is not suited to my tastes.
J, Dallas, USA
How is it that National Geographic can show topless women nursing their children and no one complains? (They even show these programs in public school as educational material!)
J, Dallas, USA
Would these women be concerned if they found pics of themselves breastfeeding on some porno site.
Sarah, Neath, UK
Would they also take down any pictures of a woman giving birth, the most natural thing you can do, saying it's pornographic?
Saying that, facebook have to have a policy regarding nudity, it's unfortunate that this will include pictures of women breastfeeding, but the policy is there for a reason.
Alison, oxford,
This is a sign of the narcissistic times. I don't thing anyone is saying that breastfeeding isn't natural. However, when did it become socially acceptable to do it in public? My wife breastfed both of our kids and she didn't feel the need to shout it to the roof tops!
Paul Clifton Jr., Phoenix, USA
I just hope Facebook doesn't take down my pictures of men urinating in public. After all, that's "perfectly natural" also, right?
Ted, Akron, OH, USA
I don't find breastfeeding to be sexual or obscene, however, I do believe there is a time and a place for it. I do feel uncomfortable when I walk into a public place and see a mother breastfeeding her child without a blanket or some kind of cover-up. I feel the same way about seeing photographs.
Amy , Glynn, US
I agree that breastfeeding is perfectly natural. There are other things that are perfectly natural that we are not allowed to do in public. Breastfeeding is not one of them. I think the problem is not the breastfeeding itself but the show of breasts. Even in public I believe there are restrictions.
Bill Scott, Windham, USA
i'm all for breastfeeding and fully support women being able to do so in public. but why on earth would you want to post pictures of yourself breastfeeding on facebook?
i just don't get that one. it may be a tad hard handed removing the pics but why post them anyway?
Deno, Preston,
Breast feeding is the natural way of feeding a baby. Our society has become soooo full of misconceptions that it reduces the good things to bad and the bad and terrible things to good. As a child, women breast fed their babies in church.
It was nothing to see and no one thought anything about it.
Mike Moore, Little Rock, USA
So a breast used for its intended purpose is obscene ? If a picture is offensive, and we all know a single picture paints a thousand words....well there are thousands of obscene and offensive words used on facebook every day......Facebook, get rid of offensive words too....
Lynn, Patrington, UK
Blimey, how can you compare normal babyfeeding to emptying your bowels?! EVERYTIME the western world is outraged by these pics we are still saying breasts are ONLY to be sexual and we fall in to the trap of society having this view uppermost in their minds when we see these pics. We are mammals 1st.
Dana Hunter, Coventry, UK
I find it unbeliveable that FACEBOOK would take this stand. I have 3 children and ALL of them where breast fed, even in public. Even under Facebooks Clear definition breast feeding does not meet its definition, since a womans breast is ALWAYS partially hidden while feeding, so its NOT fully exposed.
Richard L Caldwell, Fernandina Beach, FL
I breastfed my son until he was 1 year old. I fed him in public and in private. There are plenty of things in life that are healthy and natural that probably shouldn't be photographed and publicly viewed. i would breast feed in public out of respect for my baby's hunger, not attention for a cause.
Melissa, Tucson,
"It is legal to breastfeed in public ......in many countries ... including Britain"
There is no legal protection for mothers who breastfeed in public in Britain,( apart from Scotland,). In theory this means that a breastfeeding mother could be prosecuted for a breach of the peace or indecency.
Lynn Ratcliffe, Evesham, UK
I think that breastfeeding photographs should not be allowed on facebook at all. If the facebook staffers allow this to happen, they would also have to allow the other 139,000,000 facebook-users to have pictures of private body parts as well. If this happens, facebook will eventually become corrupt.
Seren, Washington, DC, United States
I, for one, feel that mothers should cover themselves and show some modesty when in public. However, if the women are open to displaying breast feeding on Facebook, I say use your right and don't look at it.
David, Mansfield, USA
Breastfeeding a child NEVER crosses the line into the realm of sexuality. Deeming an exposed nipple or an areola as pornographic, sexual, or obscene in these cases is utterly ridiculous. There should be no barriers to nor stigma associated with breastfeeding. Period.
Cynthia, Andernach, Germany
Breast feeding is a natural part of life but I don't think it has to be shown to the world. Going to the bathroom and sitting on the toilet to move your bowels etc. is a very natural thing too but I sure don't want to have my picture taken and put on face book or anywhere else for the world to see.
Maxine Bonney, Winter Haven, United States
Yeah breastfeeding is natural and great, but I sure don't want to see pictures of it online. Keep up the good work Facebook!
jordan, Seattle,
the san francisco bay area is home to about 5 million people, about 60,000 of them in Palo Alto itself. There are about a dozen people protesting in front of Facebook. It looks as if Palo Alto (where I live) agrees with Facebook. The issue is not breast feeding. The issue is the exposing oneself.
ana Carvalho, philadelphia, uSA
What an amazing testimony to the corruption of our times that photos of Moms breastfeeding their children could in any way be deemed offensive, by anyone.
Andy Eppink, Lake Los Angeles, CA, USA
Urination is natural, healthy, and a god-given right as well. Shall I include a picture of myself in the act on my profile?
d, Houston, USA
why exactly do people want to put pictures of themselves on facebook breast feeding?
will, grimsby, uk
This is an ability created by God for nuturing. He saw nothing wrong with it and so how can I? Perhaps we should better educate the youth on what is natural and what is obscene.
Barry Warner, Pittsburgh, USA
A mother feeding her child is obscene? WHAT!? That is so wrong headed that it borders on perversion. Anybody that considers a baby breast feeding to be dirty or pornographic needs to have a long talk with THEMSELVES.
Leave these women alone.
Charles, Astoria, IL, US
Breastfeeding is a natural part of life. It is absolutelly acceptable, in NO WAY obscene.
Breastfeeding is undeniably the BEST way to feed a baby. It's benefits to an infant are tremendous.
Facebook is acting improperly when discouraging breastfeeding in any way.
MC Waller, Evanston, USA
