Game is up for crime fugitives, says software firm

An online slot-machine-style game featuring mugshots of Japan’s most-wanted fugitives has been launched by a software company that says it wants to help in the fight against crime.

Slot Detective has already been played by more than 100,000 people, according to Famista Inc, but the police have given it a cool reception.

The game is like a typical fruit machine but with mugshots instead of cherries or lemons. When three of the same fugitive line up, the player wins. The jackpots reveal details of the suspect and the crime, as well as how to tip off the police and the amount of any reward offered.

Players can access the game on computers or mobile phones, Takashi Saito, of Famista, said. “We thought this could be a way to contribute to society,” he added. “If you play the game, you’ll remember their faces.”

The National Police Agency said that while it appreciated the sentiment, the game used police property inappropriately for entertainment and could distress victims. (AP)
