An Australian woman described as the world's oldest blogger has died, aged 108, weeks after writing a post in which she described being moved into a nursing home.
Olive Riley, who was born in 1899 in a remote part of western New South Wales, had posted more than 70 messages on her blog - www.allaboutolive.com.au - since setting it up in February last year.
A note posted on the blog this weekend said: "Olive passed away peacefully on July 12 and will be mourned by thousands of internet friends and hundreds of descendants and other relatives."
In her last post written in late June, Ms Riley - who until recently had lived in a hostel - wrote about being moved into a four-bed ward in a nursing home. "How the days have flown, even though I've been in bed more of the time. I still feel weak, and can't shake off that bad cough," she wrote.
Born in the outback town of Broken Hill on October 20, 1899, Ms Riley lived through two world wars and raised three children while doing various jobs, including working as a ranch cook and barmaid.
From her home in Woy Woy, just north of Sydney, she attracted a worldwide audience of thousands to her cheerful reminiscences about growing up an the Australian Outback town in the early part of the last century.
In one post last month, she wrote about having to use a corrugated wooden board to do washing by hand. "You 21st century people live a different life than the one I lived as a youngster - you just toss your dirty clothes in the washing machine, press a few switches and it's done."
"I remember scratching around to find a few pieces of wood to fire the copper for Mum. When the water in the copper began to boil, Mum would add a cupful of soap chips, and throw in a cube of Reckitt's Blue wrapped in a muslin bag to whiten the clothes."
In another, from May, she wrote about being taught home science - "sewing and cooking" - at school while the boys learnt "woodworking, metal work and useful things like that."
She also recalled being given the cane. "If we played up, the teacher would hit us on the legs with a piece of bamboo. The boys had to bend over and touch their toes, and were whacked on their bums, but thank goodness they didn't do that to us girls."
Her great grandson Darren Stone told the AAP news agency that her blog - which recently moved to http://worldsoldestblogger.blogspot.com - had been "mind-blowing" to her. "She had people communicating with her from as far away as Russia and America on a continual basis, not just once in a while," Mr Stone said.
Scores of tributes were posted on the blog over the weekend by well-wishers. "A great loss to Australian blogging and to blogging the world over," one comment read.
"It was very moving to read this," said another. "I am 57 and Olive has given my hope that maybe I'm only halfway."
