Apple has unveiled the latest updates to its MacBook and MacBook Pro laptop lines, including faster processors and the addition of a more sophisticated mousepad that responds to a greater array of touch commands.

The MacBook Pro now comes with a 2.6 GHz processor, an up to 300GB hard drive, and a 'trackpad' similar to the one on the MacBook Air - which Apple released last month - that responds to movements such as pinching and rotating.

The more basic MacBook now comes in three models - two white versions with 2.1GHz and 2.4GHz processors and 120GB or 160GB hard drives respsectively, and a black 2.4GHz model with a 250GB hard drive.

Both laptops ship with Leopard, Apple's new operating system, as well as iLife, the new suite of media software which includes the overhauled versions of iPhoto and iMovie. The MacBook Pro keyboard also features an ambient light sensor that illuminates the keys in poorly lit environments.

The most basic MacBook now has a recommended retail price of £699, rising to £949 with the faster processor and larger hard drive, while the MacBook Pro ranges from £1,299 to £1,799 depending on processing power and screen size.

There was no change to the form of either laptop.
