What makes a young man paint himself orange, put on a skin-tight T-shirt and pose like a supermodel? It’s a popular look from New York to Hungary...
Freak show When a popular sports blog, barstoolsports.com, published a series of pictures of men in clubs with absurd fake tans, it was a window on a bizarre and unexpected underworld.
Who are these people? The original blog post said the photos were taken in New Jersey clubs, but New Jersey residents quickly claimed the pictures were shot in Long Island. The truth was much stranger. Several of the shots were from a Hungarian website, captured in clubs in Vienna. The spiritual leaders of this cult are surely the three grandsons of the late Mafia boss John Gotti, with their terrifying orange skin, gel-encrusted hair, and tight shirts.
What should we call them? In Vienna they’re called krocha, in New Jersey they’re called guidos, and in Britain they’re chavs, although ours aren’t so keen on spray tan.

they've been doing this in tokyo for years...the fake-tanned 'kogal' girls started it, and then boys started getting in on the action copying the look...fake-tan and often loads of makeup (particularly white around the eyes, so they look like a sunburnt clown)! absolutely mental.
they take everything to the max out there...love it.
maori, portsmouth,
What on earth is going on with that colour? What on earth is going on,full stop? They all look like some sort of androids. All with the same face, hair and expression. And there's even one picture where these guys look like orange vampires. i'd puke if they didn't look so damned ridiculous!
Andrew Hartley, Rio de Mouro, Portugal
I think my bank adviser is one of them. Her legs for sure.
Glorb, Congleton,
You mean they did that intentionally?
Heaven help them if they are caught in the rain: they will look like their faces are melting. And the picture with this article....did the one on the right ever realize he was not completely sprayed? Or was he hoping that no one noticed he ran out of spray tan.
Next I'll be hearing those same guys are using the spray hair to give themselves beards.
ed, dayton, ohio

The truth isn't really all that strange. They're from New York and New Jersey, the original photos having been posted on an MMA forum, 'Sherdog' by a kid called Lee Hotti.
Welcome to 2006, enjoy your stay.
Jay, NYC,
Oh Man. Have you seen those pictures? Had to stop eating my lunch, couldn't stop laughing. They're not tanned, they're orange. Think sunburn with a hint of mud wrestling. If this was fancy dress I might understand....(perhaps it is?)
Ben, KingsCross, London
Not so keen on spray tan YET.
It's only a matter of time, dude.
Jack Hanson, Seattle, US
In America, we call them "Those Guys."
