A shadowy internet group has succeeded in taking down a Scientology website after effectively declaring war on the Church and calling for it to be destroyed.
The group, which goes by the name of Anonymous, is a disparate collection of hackers and activists. It called for a wave of attacks against Scientology after accusing the Church of "campaigns of misinformation" and "suppression of dissent." At least one Scientology website was still down this morning.
The group also claims to have stolen a number of "secret documents" from the Church's database, which it says are now circulating on file-sharing networks.
A spokesman for the Church of Scientology, which appears to have resurrected some sites, was quoted as saying that the Church was not the "right target" for such attacks. "These types of people have got some wrong information about us," the spokesman said.
Anonymous, which has spearheaded attacks against other websites in the past, called on its members to rise up against the Church after a video of Tom Cruise - one of the most high-profile Scientologists - leaked on the internet last week.
The video, in which the Hollywood actor was seen extolling the virtues of Scientology, was reportedly taken down from some sites after the Church claimed that it violated copyright.
In response, the group - which calls itself an "internet hate machine" - set up a website to co-ordinate a string of attacks using phone, internet and fax methods, which it called 'Project Chanology'.
The website asked members to bombard the Church's website with hits so that it would collapse - a technique known as a 'denial of service' attack, as well as exploit to vulnerabilities in the site using sophisticated hacking techniques.
Anonymous also encouraged members to harass the Church with phone calls, send so-called 'black faxes' to use up ink, and use a method called 'Google bombing', where the word 'Scientology' is linked to other terms such as 'dangerous' and 'cult' so that people entering the search term 'scientology' get skewed results.
In a video posted on YouTube, which has now been watched more than 600,000 tiomes, the group says: "With the leakage of your latest propaganda video into mainstream circulation, the extent of your malign influence over those who have come to trust you as leaders has been made clear to us.
"Anonymous has therefore decided that your organisation should be destroyed, for the good of your followers, for the good of mankind, and for our own enjoyment.
"We are Anonymous. We are Legion. We do not forgive. We do not forget. Expect us."
Security experts monitoring the attacks said that the Church's servers were not likely to suffer for more than a couple of days, and that the attacks were "amateur by hacking standards."
"It's a bit like the internet equivalent of kicking in a phone box," one said. "It's not that professional. In the forums where they're discussing it, some are wondering whether it will be possible to trace what they're doing."
The Church of Scientology, which is known for being litigious, has always vigorously defended itself in the wake of attack, and points to the free choice of adults who join, as well as its efforts to help people with criminal records.

You guys get that this is the average Joes of our nation?
This article makes Anonymous sound all organised, we're not. We're just everyone.
Doing something for the crack of it.

“If you want to make a little money, write a book. If you want to make a lot of money, create a religion.” - L. Ron Hubbard (founder and writer of the sci fi novel that founded this "religion")
This quote sums everything up really, they aren't here to help, they just want money and power.
Joe, Essex, uk
I think people should get all the facts before joining "an internet HATE group" anonymous sounds like the tyrant to me... why Hate? what are they trying to promote?
I am very wary of any group that promotes unforgiving revengful behaviour, sure everyone is entilteled to an opinion, but to spread hate and fear is of no use in times when we should be uniting and helping eachother.
We are one earth family, with many different views and religions, but a fear based hate-campaign is what starts wars,as history has shown us so many times before, those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it.
Why not have a life-afferiming, love-based opposition to scientology? is it because Anonymous has not a leg to stand on, so must take the defensive and altogether offensive stance against a movement that teaches individiual empowerment, and aiding of the less fortunate?
I am not a Scientologist, but the actions of anonymous have made me side with scientologists.

man the harpoons!
mick, leeds,
Some Anonymous may choose DoS attacks others believe this is mis-guided. This is the start of the anonymous CoSPlan, a plan to educate and inoculate against the threat of scientology. This is going to be a long campaign. In this campaign anonymous have one aim but many approaches. Other anonymous and unassociated groups are planning peaceful protests on the 10th February at assorted Co$ sites around the world. Scientology will be put under the microscope. As anonymous says, "we are anonymous, we are legion, we do not forget, we do not forgive, expect us". Become anonymous.
Tom , Exeter, UK
One must wonder why, if scientology is a real religion, they are so fervent about protecting the word they are trying to spread. Most real religions will offer up their beliefs to anyone that will listen in the hopes that those people will convert.
That this group is openly hostile to the distribution of its recruiting material is suspicious, at best. One must ask, what do they have to hide?
Steven OReilly, Mystic, GA
As has been said before if you seek answers don't look to religion use Google. Religion isn't entirely evil, without it we wouldn't have Christmas Pudding. Christmas cake is evil however.
MM, Sydney,
I don't have any inkling that there is even a morsel of truth in Scientologist beliefs, but this iVandalism is disgusting. What are these amateurs so afraid of that they have to go to these lengths? Simple answer is they're bored and need something to do. Who's next?
The best way to undermine a point of view is to discredit it, not silence it.
gaz, cambridge, uk
It is nice to see Haxxors doing something positive for the web . More of the same please .
Benzo, Nr Chelmsford,
Interesting how "Scientology" uses the Christian Cross but makes zero effort to explain how critical it is to a person's eternal life to believe in Christ. They seem to have no business using that cross, as far as I can tell, and considering what they do with it (entice people who are vulnerable), their regret will likely be beyond our imagination.
As for "religions," these are all man made, are they not?
Neither God nor Christ created or founded any religion, but God sure as heaven made man.
Anyone who can't come to that conclusion on their own, being surrounded as they are by an infinite variety of infinitely fantastic creations (often referred to as "nature"), not to mention the staggering miracle that they themselves are, is a good candidate to get suckered into "religions" such as the co-called "Church of Scientology."
"Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it." Matthew 7:14 (NKJV)
Jake Pershing, Washington, D.C., USA
L. Ron Hubbard was a fairly successful author of science fiction and fantasy. He turned one of his fantasies into a delusion that has taken on a life of its own. In France Scientology is regarded by the government as a dangerous cult movement to be watched. In Germany the government regards them as a quasi criminal organization engaged in real estate fraud and other potentially criminal activities and has no legal standing as a religion. Efforts are under way to make it illegal in Germany. It would not surprise me if EU also eventually took action against them.
Jon Maynard, Lansing, Michigan
Scientology loves claiming to be a persecuted religion. Sadly behind the veneer of glamour, it is an oppressive cult that ruins peoples lives, and has driven many people to suicide. The BBC Panorama documentary on them really opened my eyes. Brainwashing should not be tolerated.
Andrew, Croydon, UK
Tom Cruise is a Scientologist. I think he can help. Isn't that what he said in his video? Help, Tom, help. Get on board. Don't sit back and do nothing. Help.

"Secret life of L Ron Hubbard"
A documentary exposing scientology for what it really is, a cult with the main objective to get as much money as possible from the people. This is what anonymous is fighting against. Some may think that this is like in a movie, but it is happening in real life, just search youtube for "unfunny truth".
I fully support Anonymous and their action, they have only done good things so far with exposing many of Scientologys secret (and evil) documents.
Anders, Stockholm, Sweden
Scientology is merely a sop to the hard of understanding and a prop to those who cannot mentally stand on their own two feet. Is it a religon - I guess it's no dafter than many of the accepted ones around the world. It is however similar to the more insideous ones and should be resisted in its invasive attempts to brain wash people. Personaly I cannot see how a load of old gobbledygook spouted by a second rate sci-fi writer has become so rich and powerful in certain areas. Just goes to show the gullability of some folks. Fortunately the general slide in Tom Cruise' popularity because of his nutty leanings is cause to hope that these types of cults will remain marginal to the most of us.

Whats this you say?
You want to become a scietologist. Do you have money?
Lots of it and no ability to think for yourself!!! That's perfect!
Please walk right this way and after a 'small' joining fee we'll consider you a lay member.
Of course then you'll have to pay a maintenance fee monthly, and you'll have to rent your seat in the sermon, you'll be expected to sign over your house to us after six months and all your earnings to us six months after that.
The almighty alien masters are going to need lots of houses and money at their disposal when they return to Earth don't you know.

I think the hacking community dislike scientology due to the fact that years ago they forced anon@penet.fi out of business with a lawsuit.
We all lost a really good anonymous remailer - at a time when anonymous remailers were thin on the ground.
Why do we need anonymous remailers??
For many reasons - but mostly to connect via email in an anoymous fashion - try and think whistle blowers, battered wives and persecuted refugees from perverted religions (rather than the use of "anonymity" to pester, annoy, flame and do criminal acts) ...
drk, cadiz, spain
Johnathan of Clearwater
I'm going to take a small guess and say you're a scientologist, based only on you defending Scientology and its hypocrisy and you're from Clearwater.
What Anon is doing isn't right. But what Anon is is a bunch of say, 13-28 y/o men/boys doing something, as Anon puts it in many attacks, "for the lulz". They don't CARE who you are or what you've done. They do anything for laughs. As for terrorists... they're just ignorant of everything, as are you. Scientologists are not "oppressed". They are oppressors.
Alec, Arab, Alabama
Scientology is not a religion, it's a scam operated by the Religious Technology Center. For anyone considering, please honor the dead and destroyed they have left in there wake and read http://www.xenu.net for details.
John Harper, Savage, MN,
Isn't Clearwater FL a scientology runned city? and are they really oppressed? The Jews were oppressed, american muslims are oppressed. Maybe if Scientologists were open about what they claim is faith and not suppressing their belief systems from the public they are "trying to save" they would be trusted more and not treated like a cult with secret agendas.
JD, Weston, USA/FL
This is wrong! these anonymouses are internet territs they should all be rounded up and sent to guantanamo bay, their underming demcracy and picking on an oppressed peoples faith.
Johnathan, Clearwater, florida, United States Of America
Scientology is as expected a group much hated by those who would rather see mankind rot in a sea of crime, war and drug abuse. It deserves to be protected form criminals and those who enjoy the failure of others.
john, sacramento,
I totally agree with what's happening. Despite the efforts being crude, if the "Church" became bigger and dominated control, what you would end up is a collection of people wishing that they objected when it first started. Now people are objecting, they are dismissed as rebellious troublemakers (or amusingly kids). Surely the world would be a better place if people objected with things so serious if the hearsay is true, instead of having to rely on govenments who turn a blind eye.
James, Bedford,
Go go Internet hate Machine! Oh it's great to see Scientology getting a good old fashion kicking! Another religion, another cult - it all amounts to same fabricated rubbish! Religion is an embarrassment to the species!
Bill, Cambridge,
I suggest all of the doubtful minds to get a book from Scientology and see if it can be applied to help you, your kids or your family. If it helps, you can curse the man who made the so-called "utterly disturbing BBC Panaroma documentary".
People can be very easily motivated to believe the media. The intelligent observes and find out themselves about what is true and what isn't.
raju, san francisco, USA, CA
Well done, "internet hate machine"! Godspeed!
Mary Sue Lulza, Bel Air, California, USA
If Scientology is a cult then so is Christianity!
For the avoidance of doubt - all religion is evil
billy, Cardiff, Wales
Anyone wanting information about Scientology's dubious activities should watch the excellent but utterly disturbing BBC Panorama documentary about this so-called 'church' <shudder>.
Angela W., Cambridge, UK
I must confess that i am elated that this is happening. Scientology is a cult, whatever they say, and it takes over people's lives. It is simply a money making ploy.
James, Birmingham, UK
What a great bunch of guys. Finally, somebody who knows right from wrong. I can't wait to see what the "pandetermanist" scientologists do. I certainly hope they "keep their ethics in".
Scientology is an embarrassment to the Western World.
