Apple has admitted that some batteries in its Macbook and Macbook Pro line of laptops have 'performance issues' and has issued a software update to fix the problem.
Among the symptoms of batteries that are affected are swelling, the battery not being recognised or not charging, and a shorter than expected battery life.
The company said that the problem, which could affect any laptop or batteries bought between February 2006 and April 2007, 'is not a safety risk' and has offered to replace any defective batteries. In the meantime, users could continue to use their current battery, Apple said.
Reports of swollen batteries have circulated since the Macbook range was introduced early last year and 'visibly deformed' battery packs were among the problems the update was designed to address, the company said.
If symptoms persist after the update, which can be downloaded here, users should contact their local store to arrange for replacement battery free of charge, Apple said.
Despite the problems, Macbook remains a successful range for Apple. The company recently reported that sales of its portable computers rose from 498,000 to 891,000 over the 12 months to March 31, helping boost quarterly profits to $770 million (£386 million).

I love my Apple, but it is going all pear shape these days. Selling a expensive piece of equiment, but can't be bother to put the right stuff in.
My PB had the mother board changed, the battery change twice, the lower slot ram changed. Ooops it is working now.
Although I forgot to return my first battery, and got charge £130 for it.
A rather pricey mistake for a dead battery.
Apple is so tight that I am not surprise things go wrong.
As for Melanie, check the exchange program, and if you have access to the main, just take off the battery. This is what one is suppose to do. Like one apple tech told me, that people should not run their system 24h a day, but then at 3am some clever system suppose to refresh the log files??
Get it sorted Apple. Ur sales are going up, so your prices should go down,
Saying that, I can't see myself going back to Microsoft and its nightmares, may be linux is the answer.

I had this problem to on my PB. Just stopped charging altogether and outside of the range of replacement batteries offered by Apple.
I'm just stuck.

Melanie - if you have a PowerBook, it must be at least a year or more old. In which case, if you've been using it on battery power a lot during that time, you'll probably need to buy a new one. C'est la PowerBook vie ;-)

Does anyone know who made the batteries? It was sony that made the last set of batteries that gave Apple users such a headache.

what about powerbook batteries? mines not charging........

a battery "visibly deformed" has failed. stores should have a box of batteries on hand, and immediately replace any such defective unit. a "visibly deformed" battery has been compromised for safety.
