A far-right Dutch MP released a provocative film about the Koran on a British website last night, a move that is likely to provoke violent repercussions from angry Muslims around the world.
The 15-minute “documentary” juxtaposing images of Islam’s holy book with the 9/11 terror attacks and other bombings was posted on the internet by Geert Wilders, leader of the small right-wing Freedom Party, after weeks of heated debate in the Netherlands about the project.
Mr Wilders, 44, who has built his political career campaigning against the alleged “Islamisation” of the West, argued that the film was a legitimate exercise in freedom of expression; however, many mainstream politicians and Muslims said that it was gratuitously insulting.
Speaking just before the release of Fitna, an Arabic word meaning strife, Mr Wilders said that he understood that Muslims could be upset about the film but added: “It remains widely within the framework of the law . . . My film was not made to provoke violence.”
Viewers had only a few minutes to see it on the Freedom Party website before it disappeared because of “technical difficulties”. It then became available in Dutch and English on LiveLeak, a British-based video-sharing website, sparking fears that extremists could also target British interests.
The company that runs the website defended its decision to host the film last night, saying that there was no legal reason to censor it. “LiveLeak.com has a strict stance on remaining unbiased and allowing freedom of speech so far as the law and our rules allow,” it said. “There was no legal reason to refuse Geert Wilders the right to post his film and it is not our place to censor people based on an emotive response.” The website said that it did not endorse Mr Wilders or his views.
The British Government did not comment.
Even before seeing the film, demonstrators took to the streets in several countries, including Afghanistan and Indonesia, to vent their fury at the Netherlands, and the governments of Pakistan and Iran have criticised the project.
Mr Wilders seemed to have rushed putting the film out after an American server withdrew and a Muslim organisation said that it would seek a court injunction today.
The Dutch Government condemned the film, and Maxime Verhagen, the Foreign Minister, called it irresponsible given the reaction to the publication in Denmark of cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad that sparked rioting in a dozen countries, leading to about 50 deaths. In 2004 Theo Van Gogh, the director of an earlier Dutch film critical of Islam, was stabbed by an Islamist.
“The film equates Islam with violence. We reject that interpretation,” Jan Peter Balkenende, the Dutch Prime Minister, said last night.
Brahim Bourzik,a spokesman for a Dutch Moroccan group, said that mosques would open their doors today to defuse the tension. “It is not a film, it is propaganda,” Mr Bourzik said. “There is nothing new in it.”
The film opened with a Koran being opened and the text of a sura (a verse from the Koran) which it translated from Arabic as imploring the faithful to “terrorise the enemies of Allah”. It was followed by images of aircraft flying into the World Trade Centre in New York on September 11, 2001, with extracts from phone calls to the emergency services on that day.
Further images of bloodstained bodies in the aftermath of the Madrid train bombings in March 2004, in which 191 people were killed, followed.
It showed statistics of the growing Muslim population and images of female genital mutilation, a hanging of suspected gay men, beheadings and bloodied children, all following the words: “The Netherlands in future?”
The film ended with someone leafing through the Koran, and a tearing sound. “The sound you heard was from a page [being torn out] of the phone book. It is not up to me, but up to the Muslims themselves to tear the spiteful verses from the Koran,” a text on the screen said. “Stop Islamisation. Defend our freedom,” the film concluded.
The final image was a reproduction of the incendiary Danish cartoon of the Prophet Muhammad with a bomb as a turban.
The fuse coming from the bomb was lit and as the screen turned black there was the sound of thunder.
Mr Wilders already lives under police protection after death threats for his strident attacks on Islam.

'Fitna' is the Zionist's 'The Eternal Jew', one of many in fact. 'Free speech' is Zionists criticising anyone they like, and 'Hate speech' is anyone criticising Zionists. They are trying to have it both ways.
AL, LONDON, UK
It is a defining moment for Western nations. It is the West which would ultimately suffer from their percieved phobia. The only solution is a study of Islam in the context of the way Muslims look at their faith. How can more than 1 billion humans choose to believe in a faith if it really is the way Geert Wilders portray it? I would quote a Western philosopher who said,"We don't like some people because we don't know them and we will not know them because we don't like them".
Umer Naseer, Islamabad, Pakistan
The scariest thing about the film is the statistics on the growth of the muslim community in Europe.
Yet no one seems to worry about this.
What sort of place will Europe be in 50 years time ?
Shana Burry, Radlett, Hertfordshire
Wilders is correctly described as "Far-right". There are many ex-Muslims in the Netherlands. They do not join Wilders party, because he and his party are not just anti-Muslim or anti-religious but mainly racist. The name of the party is confusing for some which is called "Freedom party". Like in the thirties a lot of Germans thought that "national-socialism" was just because it was a form of socialism. We have the same mechanism here.
Muslims in the Netherlands are afraid to speak up. All tough the Dutch government condemned the film it's daily policy is blaming the Muslims for everything what is going wrong and paving the way for this kind of racist propaganda.
The Netherlands have one of the largest and most active anti-muslim and racial biased communities in the EU. You will read their reactions too ...right here...
Like GB and the USA, the Netherlands has big stakes in the oil business (Royal Dutch Shell). I suspect oil interests do play a role but no one talks about it.
Memet, Rotterdam, Netherlands
It is simply incorrect to label Wilders "far-right." Wilders, often cast as a former Mossad agent, rejects all forms of racism, is a great supporter of rights for homosexuals and women, supports democracy and a form of liberalism that is not that different from that practised in Britain until quite recently. Simply because he believes it is appropriate for his government to support Judeo-Christian and humanistic values over Muslim and other values does not make him part of the "far" right. And there is very little else he has proposed that would merit this badge.
Wilders is a showman who may confuse many of us in the English-speaking world, but The Times has a responsibility to use a relatively well-defined label such as "far right" correctly.
Rachel Carrot, London,

I am a muslim. And my main gripe about Mr Wilders film is that the verses from the Koran are taken out of context to portray Islam as inherently violent. The Koran tells Muslims to fight back only when they are being attacked and when they are having their rights taken from them. So while Islamist extremists, having also interpreted these passages out of context, go about trying to convert the world to Islam, this is not what most muslims want.
I hate these muslim extremists as they are making life more difficult for muslims living in the west who sincerely want to just get on peacefully with everyone else.
And right-wing extremists are just as bad because they take every opportunity to portray all muslims as dangerous when this is not true.
Muslim parents need to be more responsible to ensure their kids don't end up radicalised. Most importantly, they need to have it instilled in them that everyone is equal and no ones life is worth more than someone elses.
Mohammed Muddasar, Birmingham,
why do terrorists have the freedom to espose hate for anyone who is not muslim, but when someone points out what they are saying and doing, we sensor it. These people want to torture and kill you !!!!! if we don't defend ourselves, if the free people of the world don't wake up, all will be lost. THANK YOU Mr. Wilder, for having the courage that our countries and countrymen lack.
MJ, Kansas City, MO/USA
Mnr. Wilders' *Fitna* seems to me an expression of his own anger. When a person complains about a problem, it is responsible to also suggest a solution. His demand for Mulims to excise "the bad parts" from the Quran is a start, but he has also gotten it wrong. The acts of violence and anger he presents to us incorrectly labels them as "Islamic," but they are only misguided corruptions of Quranic verse. Muslim people are equally outraged at these acts.
Taken out of context, the verses he referenced can certainly be misinterpreted, as can (and have) verses from the Bible.
To Mnr. Wilders' credit, he has pointed out that we need to engage in serious discussion about the Quran, and the Bible and the Ramayana. Believer or non-believer, these books are here to stay.
For this I look to Muslim leaders. If it is to be decreed "sacrilege" to discuss and question the Quran, we should not be surprised to learn of ignorant misinterpretation and the tragedy that follows.
Jeff Rapport, Portland, OR
Meh, I've seen worse on BNP propganda vids.
Jeff, Manchester,
I saw the movie this morning on LiveLeak. It merely quotes quran verses, then shows specific examples of the dictates of these verses being carried out as well as examples of muslim clerics speaking the very words of exhortation to muslims to carry out these dictates. I am confused about how this offensive...it ismore truth telling,

You think you can scoff at the bible whilst thinkking that your Quran is untouchable. If you want respect, then you have to earn it. Many scholars say that the Quran has copied many ideas from the bible, and seeing how it was created many years afterwards, then there is probably some truth in that!

"The best answer from Muslim side would be a movie highlighting the true colour of western civilization. The opening scene could show a medieval Pope ordering Crusade and final scenes could show Iraq war and Abughraib. Such a film may need much more than 15 minutes though!"
That's fine, but there will be one glaring difference. In the aftermath of your hypothetical documentary on Western blunders, Muslims will not have to worry about the West erupting into irrational convulsions of rage and anger, death threats, bombings, decapitations, defenestration, exhortation to murder, etc because of legitimate criticism leveled against. Compare that with the constant fear of those who speak out against Islam (Ayann Hirsi Ali, Robert Spencer, Salman Rushdie etc) and those who even write under pseudonyms for fear of having their life taken. The right to free speech, and implicitly the right to offend, is a principle which distinguishes the West, and a principle which is worth defending.
Thurman Pierre Reed, Berkeley, United States/CA
"It happened in Bosnia Herz. "
No, it didn't. There it was the Muslims who were being persecuted. They shot back, yes, but they didn't suddenly go around yelling "you're not Muslim, bang!" at people.
M. R., stockport,
The video clips clealy show what islamic militants are stating. When these clips are displayed on the islamic websites calling for killing nonbelievers of Islam, none of these islamic leaders did nothing to stop them. Now when some show what is happening they complain. Can they swear on Koran what was shown is a lie.

Yes. He does. And yes, it happened in Lebanon. It happened in Bosnia Herz. It happens in Kashmir. It stands a chance anywhere that Islamic radicalism thrives and they have numbers enough to feel that they can or should dominate.
Stefa , NYC,
The dangers of Islam are now out in the open, and undeniable. Politicians are so firghtened of these people that they will not speak out!

Europe is supposed to be the free world where all opinions are aired. We have had to suffer speaches of hatred by Islamic extremists in our capital city so why not hear this?
Ian, L.A, USA
NObody can deny that these acts or barbarianism were not cartried out by muslims in the name of Islam. NObody can deny that such verse exists in the koran. Nobody can deny that this aggresively converts people to its religion. If the west wants to continue to be free, then it should pay attention
Lopa, Goa, India
This film expose the real present danger to our free society.
Nothing in this film is offensive. it is simply the cruel truth.
All politicians denouncing this film, they did it by fear. This the beginning of the end of our freedom.
Let be honest and face the reality. But, it must be said that not all Muslims are violent and the large majority isn't. However, the moderate Muslims must do more to confront the extremist and violent and stop blaming the West far all their problems.
Jacquelin Ouellette, Montreal , Canada
There was a brilliant documentary by Adam Curtis a few years back called "the power of nightmares". It is about how governemnt use fears to control us. And its working, just look at how the anti terror laws have been misused, and how invasions of harmless countries are justified. The bogey men in the past used to be the Nazis, then the USSR, and when that collasped Islam suddendly became the biggest threat ever. I wouldn't be surprised if China becomes the next Bogeyman.

West Europeans ought to be grateful to Geert Wilders, for him being brave and courageous in speaking out what is going on as European leftists are trying to play down on what is a real danger to our Civilization. It is not the seeking out of massive destruction arms which G. Bush and his allies goal, but their determination to keep fanatic islamists under control. Let 's pray for Western Countries to stay united in order to forbid Almadineyad to produce nukes, otherwise western countries will have a big deal to tackle
shortly. I' ve just seen the Wilders film and I can state here that there is nothing out of real in it. It is to keep our fingers crossed and prepared for the worse that it is still to come.

Keep producing more. May be a knighthood from the Queen. What is this meant to achieve? Is it to culminate in some kind of conflict where muslims are deported en masse from europe? Or is it to culminate in some kind of realisation by muslims that their religion is some kind of fairy tale by a mad man so then they all become atheist?
I see neither happening. Europeans stopped believing the bible because it was a real fairy tale in direct conflict with mordern science, stuff like the earth being a few thousand yrs old and earth created in 6 days and one day rest etc. Or dying and coming back after 3 days-laugh or walking on water?
I am a muslim and forever proud of it.
And very happy. With very low attenuation to malaise like suicide, alchoholism, depression, AIDS. Richard Dawkins himself said it, humans created religion as a survival mechanism or are you a better atheist than dawkins.
Muhammad, Cambridgeshire,
His views may be forcefully put but they are grounded in fact. These Islamics want us to respect them and their religion when they show no consideration for indigenous cultures, religions or secular institutions of the European nations they have migrated to. Sharia Law for Britain anyone???
Wow Talk about destroying one of the worlds oldest democracies and cultures.
I say fair play to Wilders...Our Political Leaders should Take Note...
This fear and appeasement of Radical Islam will lead to the destruction of our European Culture of Religious Freedom and Democracy. Time for European Leaders and the public to move away from this PC and cowardly approach to the threats posed by Large scale Islamic Immigration into EUrope and the Mad Mullahs who have followed them here.
Rob Kennedy, Ireland,
It seems that substantial immigration and social changes always provide a podium for these kind of political figures (compare mr. Powell in Britain or mr. Le Pen in France).
The fact that a couple of fanatics abuse their religion for their own puposes doesn't make the religion itself an evil ideology, does it?
Arjen , The Hague, Netherlands
I think the film is nothing more, than another attention seeking attempt from Geert Wilders, for the past few years we have had nothing but attention seeking attempts from this man and I've had enough of it. The media has been dominated by this film and the potential bad respns of muslims in our country.
Well I'm glad to see that I was right fro the start. Dutch muslims, saw this for what it was, an attempt at provoking them, and they ignored it. Had they not they had only given Geert Wilders more ammunition.
Geert talks about how violent muslims are, and he gives the few that all muslims share the ideas of the people portrayed in this, film. Does he really want me to believe that some day my mum's turkish and moroccan neighbours will come out of their house and kill the whole street for not being muslim? Jordan wants to boycot dutch products, meaning dairy and flowers. Since NL started trading with the middle eats, Milk got 0,20E more expensive, as a proper cloggy I can't be happier
Esher, Heerhugowaard, The Netherlands
It contains nothing we haven't seen before but if all the publicity means that a few more people have their eyes opened to the realities of Islam then it's done its job. Watch it before it's removed.
Alan, Edinburgh,
A man who advocates banning books in the defence of freedom of expression is an intellectual joke.
A man who claims to stand for the defence of the Judeo-Christian tradition but himself believes in nothing is hardly credible.
Wilders is no Saviour of the West but a power-hungry politician who thinks that hammering on the "Islamic Problem" is a sure way into power. He may yet find out that politics is a slippery game where fortunes can lead to ruin in a very short space of time.
In the meantime, he clearly should be allowed to show this sort of cut-and-paste drivel and Muslims the world over would do well to just shrug it off or intellectually debate it - as the vast majority of Dutch Muslims have so far done.
Martin, Utrecht, Netherlands
Nothing like a good old muslim bashing by the people leaving comments. I love the fact that all middle east countries are seen as backwards even though the US was still lynching people forty years ago, people talk about stoning women. Forty years is nothing and societies grow at different paces, it is not possible to export ideals like democarcy.
The film is not what should be questioned. The reason for producing the film should be questioned. If a film maker or artist is making a statement fair enough but it is like mo mowlan wanting to become Steven Spielberg just to create conflict.
It is also funny to hear people talking about freedom of speach etc. How many free images are we getting of the violence in Iraq, how many pictures of dead kids are shown on the news, are there no dead kids? dead soliders coming home? How many times have I seen people from the US comment that there is no coverage of this that and the other in their own press so have to come to the UK sites.
Billy Wizz, Milan, Italy
Forever enshire in British Law (and European) separation of church and state for Islam seeks to swallow hard won freedoms and democracy. Islam is a dangerous religious and polical movement. Dangerous in that it inspires hate, dangerous in that it seeks to bow each society it touches to its way. You're with us or against us. Divide and conqueour.
Wilders film shows nothing new - we know about hate preachers, we know about Madrid and 9/11, we know about woman and gay rights in Islam. We know about well funded Terrorists. Hopefully our governments will realise before it's too late appeasement isn't an option.
Unfortunately crusades will be fought, largely for peoples hearts and minds through the guise of christianity. Perhaps this is what the government has in mind. More faith schools anyone?
Mark, Bton, Uk, West Sussex
Passant Rable says, "I do approve of freedom of expression but insults towards a Holy book are not freedom of expression."
So you believe in freedom of expression so long as you get to define it?
That is precisely the basis of so much western criticism of islam. It is not yours to define - freedom of expression is defined by the community in which the expression takes place (in this case, worldwide) and, while some may find the expression itself abhorrent, they must have the strength and character to respond reasonably.
By the way, my understanding of 'reasonably' does not include bans and bombs.
John Blackley, Winter Garden, Florida
Free speech - was that the same free speech that was banned in these Extreme Right wing European countries where debating or questioning the historically interpretted actions of Hitler against a certain people is not allowed and it is an offence.
Free speech indeed.
Shaffiq Mahmood, Halifax, UK
Scholars say Mohammed did not write the Koran, and the deciples did not write the scriptures. Can we all acknowledge that text-based religion is a big mistake and forget the lot. God is not petty enough to bother writing fiction.
Robert Murray, Reno, Nevada
He hasn't done anything that muslim terrorists don't do anyway.
The internet is full of images of suicide bombings, hostage murders, and recruitment campaigns for potential terrorists all with backing tracks of prayers and texts from the Koran.
The sooner the Islamic comunity accept what's being done by their own people to their own faith, the better it wil be for them and us. Once that happens, the likes of Mr. Geert will lose their 'raison d'etre'.
Yours in hope

What is it with the majority of muslims not being able to take criticsm?
Chris, Hampshire,
Brilliant Geert,
Its about time we stopped burying our heads in the sand and wake up to the facts and acts of radical islam.
We show them tolerance but they show us NONE - only hatred and violence, tolerance is not a word in their koran.
Dave, Amsterdam, The Netherlands
I'm a Muslim and I have no intention of attacking Wilders. Yes, as strange as it may sound we're not all "angry Muslims" as you so eloquently put it in the lead! I do approve of freedom of expression but insults towards a Holy book are not freedom of expression, they're just another way to provoke us so that you can once again attack us for being "angry Muslims." I don't approve of what some Muslims are doing by sending out death threats but these are EXTREMISTS! We're not all like that, every religion in the world has an extremist group! And you should be educated and civil enough not to stereotype an entire religion based on the actions of one group of extremists.
Educate yourself about Islam! Don't just attack it
Passant Rabie, Cairo, Egypt
How many of the people in government who have condemed this film have actually seen it? It is obviously anti islamic propaganda but in a world of free speech there is nothing wrong with that. It simply makes the point that despite forever being told that islam is peaceful, it is a religion that certain people use as an excuse to do pretty terrible things. The fact that the publication of one mans opinion, that does nothing but show actual events that have been done by muslims for islam, will be met with violence proves his point.
John, Manchester,
As a liberal Christian I would advise Muslims not to go on the rampage about this film. That is exactly what Geert Wilders is hoping for. It would prove his point to the letter. If you choose to live in a multi-faith society, you have to do without the external protection of Islamic law. The UK is officially a Christian monarchy, but that doesn't prevent the publication of anti-Christian and anti-monarchical newspaper articles and TV shows. So there's no way that Islam, either, can be protected from journalistic disagreement.
If I were a Muslim, and could not tolerate any form of public insult to my faith, I would examine whether the existing UK laws on blasphemy could be adjusted, within the constitutional context of a Christian monarchy, to protect my community from needless social aggression on religious grounds. But don't forget that UK law has allowed secular British academics, from Bertrand Russell to Richard Dawkins,
to rubbish the "official" religion of Christianity.
Edmund Burke, Kingston upon Thames, England
Found the film rather boring because it only told me what I already knew. Muslims will no doubt show the film to be true in the next few days too with yet more violence
John, Salford, England

why is it exactly that Mr Wilders is criticised for his 'explosive' doco when the 'explosive' stuff comes quoted directly from the koran or from other persons who interpret it (correctly).
whatever Mr Wilders other views are, i can only commend him for highlighting this issue which confronts us all. thank you Mr Wilders
Ed, Sydney, AUS
Well done to the filmaker. Well done LiveLeak for hosting the film.
Shame on the Euro politicians, youtube et al who have sided with the forces of violence and intimidation and called for or implimented a ban on the film. The sooner that these people realise that western citizens understand exactly what motivates islamic supremicists the better. I
For those moslems dont like the film here is a tip which us westerners employ when we dont like something: avoid it by not watching it.
k holme, london,
The public was waiting to see this Film, in the first 2 hours after its publication it was viewed over 780.000 times!
The People are hungry for a sober non-propagandistic approach of how to deal with this ideology. As the Film mentions towards the end: 1945 Europe defeated the Nazis, 1989 Europe defeated the Communists, Now Europe has to rise an defeat this latest menace against its freedom.
Franz Walter, Lower Saxony, Germany
Don't shoot the messenger. Wilders is a much easier and safer target than radical Islam, so weak western governments take the easy way out.
Calling him "far right" and ignoring him is completely lame.
Patrick Henry, Bristol,
Great, Mr. Geert Wilders. Just keep it up. You have spoken only the truth, though Muslims may not like it. Most of the non-Muslims are with you.
Muslims in secular democracies need to respect secularism, freedom of expression, democratic principles and values and traditions of a nation and other religious groups. It cannot be a one-way street. If they chose to interpret them to suit their conveniences, there will be more of these.
Regards,

Absolutely right Mr Wilders.
This film presents an inescapable interpretation of Islam.
The importance of this film is twofold. Firstly, for the message it contains and secondly as a barometer which indicates how cowed Europeans have become in the face of this imported supremacist ideology.
Terence Smith, London, England
Mr. Wilders is known for his insane ideas to remove freedom. Islamic clothing should be banned, the Netherlands should have its' own Guantanamo and of course the Quran has to be banned.
This short-sighted movie is nothing but ignorant copy & paste. You can make the exact movie on any religion (Abu Ghraib, anyone? Blame that on Christianity or just complete idiots?)
Oh well, mr. Wilders got his attention again. Time to move on. Sure he's allowed to make ignorant movies, just don't see him as a prophet. He's as extreme as the foolish imams he shows.
(BTW: the image of "Mohammed B." is wrong. It's an image of a Dutch rapper. Do your homework Wilders!)

spineless cowering appeasers to Islam. Bravo Geert.

Free speech means something in the west.
Mr Wilders has every right to post his film on the net.
And if it offends someone's medieval mythology....too bad.
And when I hear whiners about "rights and responsibilities" I say, where is the responsibility for stoning women to death for dating a man from the wrong tribe, or hanging homosexuals just for being gay?
Betsy Wright, Ealing, W5,
Lucky Mr Wilders lives in Holland.
If he lived in "no free speech Britain" he'd be arrested and charged with...er...upsetting a radical iman. 5yrs in the slammer.
I luv Holland.
James Tabor, Hampstead,
Ok now that we have seen this film. How is this film offensive. He has not made up verses from the quran. And he did not make those imams spout racist and anti semitic comments!Nor did he coach the girl. This is a documentary that compiled stock footage that is out there about radical islamists. Tell me how is that offensive!
Jay, Lincoln, US
An excellent and thought-provoking film. I watched it 5:00 am this morning. See it while you can....
G. Conway, Hastings, England
I applaud this film and feel that governments who condemn this film as it may incite muslims are cowards at best. Muslims don't feel restraint to say and act against the west but the west is made to feel bigoted if they tell the harsh truth about islam. Hypocrits! Why do western goverments allow people who clearly hate western ideology and peoples to continue migrating to their countries. If it were reversed muslims would kill westerners in the streets for being in their countries and espousing western ideals. Western nations need to stop the migration of muslims and their hatred now, before another world war is fought on their soil.
Kristina, Copenhagen, Denmark
Would christians be able to file an injunction against an anti-Christian/Jewish film in most Muslim countries? In a democracy, freedom of the press is a presumed right (that should be able to express all viewpoints). It is scary to imagine a muslim majority in many European countries in the near future......
Joel, Miami, FL
Why pray, is is a 'documentary' and not just a documentary? Good on Geert Wilders, when are you 'pc slaves' going to wake up to the facts and get some 'knackers'? Great Britain was once great. A very thought provoking 15 minutes for the open minded.
Paul Harding, Sydney, Australia
