Sony is expected to sell up to 1.5 million of its PlayStation 3 consoles in Britain this year, putting it on track to outstrip Nintendo's cheaper Wii within 12 to 18 months of its launch.
The consumer electronics giant has made 220,000 of the £425 consoles available for the UK launch on Friday, a figure so large that retailers are reporting none of the supply problems that have plagued rival launches.
However, analysts and retailers have warned against interpreting the absence of a stock squeeze as a negative sign.
Nick Parker, an analyst with Screen Digest, said: “The lack of shortage is supply driven; what Sony has shipped will sell. We estimate that Sony will sell around 4 million units in Europe this year, with 1 to 1.5 million in the UK.”
The specialist firm believes that Sony’s PlayStation 3 could overtake the Wii - a device aimed at a predominately young audience - during 2008, and possibly towards the end of the year, with Microsoft’s Xbox 360 likely to follow. This is despite the high price of the PlayStation 3 compared with the £180 Wii or £265 Xbox 360.
According to retailers, when Microsoft launched the Xbox 360 in 2005, about 70,000 units were available in the UK, while the first day stock of the Nintendo Wii last autumn amounted to 105,000. Both launches were accompanied by stock shortages.
A spokesman for Woolworths said of the PlayStation 3: “This is the first console launch for years where we anticipate that we will be able to have consoles available at the day of launch in every single Woolworths store.”
When Sony launched the PlayStation 2, it was against the unthreatening backdrop of a flagging Sega Dreamcast platform. This time around, there will be plenty of challenges, with Microsoft making major strides in the console market and Nintendo’s Wii proving an unexpected hit.
Some retailers believe that Sony will cut the £425 price of the PlayStation 3 before Christmas. The price reflects the sheer cost of the complex boxes, which include the pricey Blu-ray, high-definition DVD players. However, the recent strengthening of the yen may help justify a price cut. Sony is also able to play the currency game more effectively in Europe and the UK than in the US. The per-machine losses in Europe are more or less negated by currency exchange rates.
In the run-up to the PlayStation 3 launch, Xbox 360 sales are only 1 per cent higher than they were at the same time last year, according to Screen Digest, suggesting that demand has peaked. Consoles are expected to hit the highest level of sales in the third and fourth years after their launch.
Sony has a lot riding on the powerful PlayStation 3, both in terms of its bottom line and its reputation.
But in the four months since the Japanese and US launches of the machine, Sony has gleaned knowledge that will stand it in good stead for a European launch. It has learnt, for example, that nobody really wants the version with the smaller, 20 gigabyte memory, and that the games that work best are the ones that can accommodate a lot of simultaneous online players.

Getting my PS3 tomorrow! Yipee!! I think every one should take a deep breath, count to 10 and calm down. Who cares if the PS3 sells more than 360 and Wii or vice versa. As long as everyone is playing games and enjoying themselves on their consoles, the world will be a better place. Anyway all you've got to remember is............PS3 is gonna kick everything into oblivion!! Yee ha
Adam, Eastbourne, England
The Wii is designed for everyone!! Why else are people in retirement homes playing bowling leagues?
The Nntendo "kiddy" image was devised as a marketing tactic by Sega about 20 years ago, and has been perpetuated ever since. Do some investigation before repeating someone else's propaganda.
Motion control has brought the fun in gaming back for everyone, not just the 14-35 year old boys and men who dominate today.
A balanced piece would have better portrayed the three companies strategy - Microsoft's excellent online, and wooing of t PC developers, Nintendo's risky Blue Ocean strategy and Sony's - well I'm not sure, but the Cell is certainly a cool bit of kit.
The past does not guarantee the future.

3 days left for the ps3. And know what? Not many people care about it. 70% of the ps2 were sold by PARENTS for their KIDS. Aint gonna happen ith a price tag of 600 euro.
Yes the ps3 is a powerfull machine, but to get full potential out of it, it would take 5 years like the ps2 . And xbox 360 isn't eighter a full potential. When you look at both consoles they have both weaknesses and call it even. Graphics will be almost the same.
And look at the games. Mass effect,Blue Dragon,Bioshock, Lost odysse, Forza 2, halo 3 compare this line up with sony's.....
BTW GTA4 and DMC4 are coming to the 360 also.
Games will decide the outcome and I think ms is doing better.
I think were gonna have 3 winning consoles this time. It's all about the games.
Jeroen, leuven,
It's true every store is saying it will have them for launch day. Plus all the best games have been out on the Xbox 360 for ages already now! The PS3 will be good and I will get one but the Online mode can not surpass Xbox Live. Virtua Tennis for the 360 will have full online play.....The PS3 version will have NO online play...Call of Duty 3 on the PS3 does NOT support voice chat, where as it is a standard feature of the Xbox 360 to provide voice chat for all games and even when not playing a game! Either the stores are lying and won't have any, or there will be LOADS left of the shelf on Launch day, which would be the first console launch in many years for this to happen, you would not even need to pre-order one to get it on lauch day!

Sonys marketing dept have cocked up on this one. BUT saying that i had a 360 and its true what everybody says about the cost of peripherals vs the PS3. There is alot of movement in terms of exclusives and yes, that does look bad for Sony. However, once HOME + Little Big Planet are up and running (October for HOME i read) then things may start to change. I love the 360 but alot of the games are developed on the PC and do / will eventually trickle across, such as Gears of War. I am getting a PS3 on Friday with slight reservations but the 360 has been out alot longer + has now got some killer apps. Sony must be shaken a bit but there long term strategy must be strong. Definitely a price cut will launch its sales volumes and a few genuinely must have titles. Oh and it would be good to get Dual Shock controllers back as they are far more fun than motion control......
Dom, Basingstoke,
Constantinos C., London, UK WHAT ARE YOU ON ABOUT?
All the Games that are coming out on PS3 (Excluding Motorstorm and Resistance) are already out on the XBOX 360 and LOOK EXACTLY THE SAME
Get your facts right before you string together some big words to look Smart
TRUEGAMER, Ipswich,
The PS3 is indeed an investment as Mr Harrison (Sony's SCEE) refers to it, due to its power and additional capabilities such as the Blu ray, motion sensing controller and a quite large hard drive. PS3's first generation games are comparable with its only rival to my opinion Xbox 360's second to third generation games, so when it comes to maths you can always be sure, that when the second gen games arrive on the ps3 they will definatly surpass anything that Microsoft has to offer. In terms of online Sony is quick to gain ground and already reached Microsofts Xbox live, with new inovations such as HOME and top rate multiplayer contents in each game. Blu ray is and will dominate as the new HD format of choise already outselling the HD-DVD brand (Which is released almost a year now). Blu ray's huge storage capacities (up to 54GB) movie developers will have more storage allowing the to deliver more content per disc, 1080p images and true HD sound. If you want evertyhing then buy a PS3
Constantinos C., London, UK
check out www.nexgenwars.com for up to date sales figures on the 3 consoles. You will see that the PS3 is way behind. This is bad news for the PS3 as it will lose vital exclusives to the rival consoles. Companies wont make games for a console that has a tenth of potential customers as the others.
Also check out some websites to see if there are any pre-orders left. You will find that almost everywhere will have PS3s on launch day as they just cant sell the 220,000 (which is only about half the Wiis sold in the UK up to now)

"Im impressed the (so called) analysts can make such a claim considering the 360 and Wii are both outselling the PS3 in the US and whilst a Wii is hard to find PS3s are gathering dust on shelves"
Analysts jobs are using the best facts in the present to predict the future, provide insight for their clients. A win today doesn't mean a win tomorrow. There is a thing call "Change". If you comment is correct, M$ and Wii will win forever which is impossible.

The 360 and Wii are outselling PS3 by miles, how can you come to the conlusion that the ps3 will be the no1 console, gamers dont just buy a console because its made by sony anymore, given GTA 4 is coming out on both xbox360 and ps3, sony's trump card has gone
adam, london,
ps2= 120 million consoles xbox= 25 million. why would it all change now seriously look at the figures
Martin, london,
Playstation 3 is by farthe best console on the worldwide market and the Xbox 360 owners have wasted their money on their choice of console. The potential of the Playstation is unbelievable and it is definatley lives up to the name of 'Next-Gen'. I played the Playstation in gamestation on March 17th and i was astounded with the level of detail and the quality of graphics in the games. It was alot better than the 360 and the games being released for the PS3 don't even show off the potential of the system. I have pre-ordered my Playstation and i am excited and extremely looking forward to March 23rd (European Release Date). I cannot wait until the Xbox 360 owners realise the difference between their console and the true Next Generation Console, The Playstation 3. PS3 is great and it will soon take over the Wii and surely the 360 even with it;s large price-tag.
Stuart Powell, Birmingham, England
Hmm, well the PS3 was launched in November in Japan and North America, and yet has only managed to sell roughly 1.6million units (nexgenwars.com) in those 4 and a half months, and despite the higher price you believe Sony will sell 4 million units in Europe in just 8 and a half months? Hmm...
Marcus, London,
PS3 is by far the best console on the market and i cant wait to get mine on march 23 (european release) i cant wait for when Xbox 360 owners release that they wasted their money on a microsoft 'PS2'
PS3 is great and when i played it in gamestation i was amazed with everything about it
XBOX 360 owners have made a big mistake!!
Stuart Powell, Birmingham, England
Hmmm, there are indeed lots of PS3s out there, not because Sony are masterminding a brilliant launch (could it be any more of a disaster?) but because nobody wants one. Witness for example internal emails from Comet revealing they have yet to hit their preorder targets.

Dave, Birmingham,
I think most of the people who post on here are forgetting that once you soup up a 360 to its full potential its more expensive that a 60gb ps3, i mean the 360 wont play hd-dvd without the hd-dvd player, sold seperatley of course, 360 games are 40 quid while so are the ps3 games yet you can have 25 gb on a single layered blu ray disc and 50gb on a dual layered disc, the wii isnt exactly "next gen" in my opinion but it is innovative and it has a wider audience than that of the 360. I think the 360 will die out pretty shortly, they've had a few blockbuster games in over a year which isnt really enough for a next gen console even though halo is still to come, not only that but the 360 consoles are still failing with the "3 rings of death".....it happened to me twice within the space of 5 months, and give it 5 days and it will be collecting dust on my shelf.
Dale, Liverpool,
The PS3 is being outsold by the Wii 2/1 in the US, and an astounding 5/1 in Japan. Given that demand for the wii is sky high in europe months after launch, any talk that the PS3 will 'blow away' rivals is clearly Sony propaganda. It aint gonna happen.
We heard all this back when PSP and DS launched - the DS was a gimmick, didn't have the graphics, was meant for kiddies, and the PSP would blow it away. Except, of course, it was the PSP that got blown away. The same will happen to PS3.
David Watson, london,
hello readers ,
I am from india , i know there is less amount of craze for these consoles in india as compared to uk,usa, japan and china. i really am a gaming freaque , n have played both the consoles (ps1 and ps2) , all i would like to know that what is the official launching date for ps3 i india cause i am really looking forward to buy the console
neeraj shukla, mumbai, india
Ok, yes the Wii was (sort of) original. it is also much cheaper than PS3. BUT Nintendo's console is compatile only with the.. tv set. In addition, what you get for its price is nothing more than its ability to be played with a remote control. A kind of original idea - we have all witnessed it without the remote on PS2 plus the Eye Toy. And I won't even bother to coment on the graphics. Plus when you are not so young anymore as myself, you get to play three hours with the Wii and then you have to go an repair your arm in a hospital or something :)
Nicolas, Athens, Greece
Half as much.... for twice the price....
Ste B, Sheffield,
Im impressed the (so called) analysts can make such a claim considering the 360 and Wii are both outselling the PS3 in the US and whilst a Wii is hard to find PS3s are gathering dust on shelves. Remind me not to take any betting tips from them.
Mark Simmons, London,
Yes , the PS3 will have great graphics etc. but if you are looking for intelligent gameplay get a Nintendo . PS3 games will be all style and no substance , like Hollywood movies .
I still play many of my Gamecube games but I got bored of the PS2 after a very short length of time .
Mark, Hull, East Yorkshire
Both the Wii and the 360 have proven to be worth the investment for their owners.
If you trade them in at Game, you can get £120 and £180 respectively off of your shiny new PS3! ;-p
What with the forthcoming 'Home' feature making Live look SO last-gen, I think Sony has a winning formula - again.
Adam, Northampton,
The Wii isn't predominantly targeted to a younger audience...
Besides, a lot of analysts in the US thought the same thing; that the PS3 would sell a ton of machines, but everyone realized that there aren't any good games for PS3, so why buy the thing? Except my friend Donnie. He's sorta stupid for buying it when he could have gotten CoD3 for the X360 he already has...
Kevin, West Bloomfield, West Bloomfield, MI, USA
I completely agree, although it's a good thing that there will be strong stock. I had to wait months for my Playstation Portable!
Josh Salvage, Brighton & Hove, England
all i hear peple say is about how expensive the PS3 is and how they are willing to buy a Wii instead of that all iam trying to say is why would u want to spend 180 pounds on a machine that is way less compatible than the ps3 and not even that which doesnt have good graphics i dont get 1 thing at all WHY DO PEOPLE LIKE THE NINTENDO Wii???
Scot, Sydney, Australia
The wii is still sold out after 4 months in the UK, so i wouldn't expect the ps3 to catch up anytime soon.
Sony is going to have a hard year and 2008 might be better for them but they have to stop losing exsclusives to the 360.
Josh, Harrogate,
These are great news, it's about time, sony gets some good press...
i already bought a PS3 and i'm happy with it...
Europeans should be very very excited they're getting a great selection of games, that we didn't get in the U.S....
and between us let me tell ya, the wii, will fade out just like the gamecube, and as developers learn how to use the PS3 hardware to its full potential, we all shall witness the fall of the 360....
Victor, Boca Raton, Florida
Time to buy Sony and Bluray manufacturer shares.
The sale of 4 million PS3s in Europe places 4 millions Bluray players in European homes. This suddenly creates a market for Blu-ray movies, and many people (chances are, a large majority of those who can afford PS3s) who now have HDTVs will be dying to utilise them. With such a market, retailers can now start stocking Bluray movies on their shelves creating a snowball effect that will make Bluray the VHS of our day, while HD-DVD will be consigned to the legacy of Betamax.
Poor Microsoft.
Pete, Cov,
There will be loads of these left in stores come launch day I think!!
