LONDON A powerful image of a woman with the child she had after being repeatedly raped during the Rwandan genocide has been shortlisted for the National Portrait Gallery Photographic Portrait Prize.

Joseline Ingabire is pictured, above, with her daughter Leah Batamuliza. In the background is another girl, less than a year older than Leah, whom Ingabire was expecting when her husband was murdered in front of her. Jonathan Torgovnik, the photographer, is one of four people nominated for the £12,000 award, which showcases new talent in portrait photography. Torgovnik, 38, who began his career as a combat photographer in the Israeli army before moving to New York, has had work published in Newsweek, The Sunday Times Magazine and Paris Match.

Judges have selected 60 portraits from 6,900 entries and is open to work by students, amateurs and professionals. Other nominees include Michelle Sank, Julieta Sans and David Stewart, a commercial photographer from London, who is shortlisted for a portrait of his teenage daughter Alice, right.

Winners will be announced on November 6. The exhibition opens on November 8.
