In Union Square, The New York Times reported recently: “A gang of enterprising, mostly homeless youths are pummeling each other for your amusement, a few bucks, and hopes of immortality.” These street fighters call themselves the Union Square Spartans, and post videos on YouTube of their street duels. “Pummeling each other”, however, is a an exaggeration. This is less “fight club”, more capoeira. Some of the videos do feature crowds and a bit more action, but many are timid altercations with a small audience. Maybe the cops have shut some down after the recent publicity. Or maybe they just weren’t that good at it to begin with.

Over on the prolific comedy sketch site collegehumor.comStreet Fighter: The Later Years is a web series set ten years after the original film. Life hasn’t quite turned out as you would have expected for the renegade pugilists of the original game. Zangief is now a broken shell of a man, a cleaner in a video games arcade who’s afraid of the teenage patrons, and Dhalsim is a cab driver. When a chance meeting throws them together again, they decide to reconvene for another tournament. But all is not as easy as they had hoped.

Tricia Walsh-Smith is the YouTube star who has recently lost her divorce settlement claim, after the judge condemned the videos she posted of herself humiliating her 76-year-old husband. She claimed, among other things, that the two no longer enjoyed carnal relations but that she found Viagra and porn films in his drawer. Some of the videos were removed, but the one that started it all has now been reposted.
