Amy Winehouse appeared to throw a punch at a member of the audience at the Glastonbury rock festival last night, writes Jenny Booth.
The troubled Camden-based singer climbed down to the pit in front of the stage to meet fans while she sang Rehab, the final song of her set. She was captured on film apparently scuffling with an unseen reveller.
Her spokesman said that the singer was provoked when a fan tried to lay hands on her trademark beehive hairdo. "The 'lashing out' was when someone tried to grab her hair and she reacted," the spokesman said.
Footage of the incident did not clearly show what provoked her lunge. The spokesman added that at least 75,000 people watched and that organisers had never seen the field so full.
Police said today that they had received no complaint of assault after the gig, and that no investigation had been launched.
During her performance Winehouse could not resist speaking of her imprisoned husband Blake Fielder-Civil, telling the audience: “My husband is out of jail in two weeks.”
But despite the rambling banter between songs, music critics said that Winehouse seemed on top form in an otherwise trouble-free set on the Pyramid stage.
Recently diagnosed with emphysema, she overcame her troubles in front of 80,000 fans and sang an hour-long set, including hits Tears Drying On Their Own, Back To Black and You Know I’m no Good.
Meanwhile, multi-platinum selling artist Jay-Z answered his critics with a show-stealing performance full of swagger and bombast.
In April, Noel Gallagher of Oasis condemned the booking of Jay-Z to headline the festival, declaring: “I’m not having hip-hop at Glastonbury. It’s wrong."
The crowd roared with laughter as Jay-Z opened his set with a clip of Gallagher voicing criticism of the rapper’s performance.
With a wry grin on his face, Jay-Z bounded on to the stage and performed a satirical cover version of the Oasis hit Wonderwall.
The 38-year-old - real name Shawn Carter - then powered his way threw an hour and 15 minutes of hits, including Hard Knock Life, Encore and 99 Problems - while his wife, R&B star Beyonce Knowles, watched from the side of the stage.
Rallying the 80,000 fans before him, the rapper shouted to the crowd: “So they say you guys didn’t want me to be here tonight. They said you guys weren’t into hip-hop.”
He thanked the crowd for embracing him and said: “This is a beautiful moment, I’m glad to share it with each and every one of you”.
The New York artist's appearance was a radical departure from the indie rock and guitar bands commonly associated with Glastonbury.
Michael Eavis, who runs the festival on his dairy farm near Glastonbury in Somerset, admitted they had “stuck their necks out on this one" in a bid to reach out to a younger audience.
After sluggish ticket sales, the gamble appeared to have paid off however when the show finally sold out.

"Killing herself AND making things worse." Uh?
joe, birmingham, uk
How very sad that it is clear that this woman needs to be sectioned for treatment and yet no one seems to do anything and lets her carry on killing herself and making things worse.
Where are her family, or are they all no hopers ?
John, Woking, Surrey
"This was a great set by a class permormer. "
john, Edinburgh,
You reckon?Sure it was Amy Winehouse you were watching?
Hardly any of the lyrics were understandable ,she was drunk as a newt and good thing the two backing singers were there as she nearly kept falling over.I'd want my money back.
john , shrewsbury, uk
Kate Moss is videoed taking cocaine, everyone turns against her and she loses modelling contracts.
Amy Winehouse is videoed taking crack, has previously assaulted a member of the public, paid £200k for her husband's bribery, and she gets invited to sing for Mandela.
You just couldn't make this up.
Laura Roberts, London, UK
Wasn't it incredible and disgraceful that the bodyguards stood back and just watched her assault this man?
What are Glastonbury bodyguards for? Are they just accomplices to assault now? Are they going to be hit men soon?
Are celebrities so untouched by law that they now get bodyguards to help?
John B., Reading, UK
Talented or not, the girl clearly has "issues" , and until she either does or does not address them, why not devote your pages to the many wonderful, worthy, up and coming musicans that would truely appreciate and benefit from the publicity. Putting her in the news keeps someone more interesting out
Lynn, Philadelphia, USA
Winehouse? shouldn't it be Lagerhouse? She should try that on Camden High Street with no 16 stone bouncer to protect her. I liked her as an artist quite a lot when I first discovered her; recent antics have changed that. She's worth millions, because of those fans.
Joe, Manchester,
"But despite the rambling banter between songs, music critics said that Winehouse seemed on top form in an otherwise trouble-free set on the Pyramid stage."
I saw this on the BBC, Winehouse was obviously intoxicated via some substance. Was utter rubbish, my 1 year old dog can sing better.
Seamus, Dublin, Ireland
"But despite the rambling banter between songs, music critics said that Winehouse seemed on top form in an otherwise trouble-free set on the Pyramid stage"
Did these so called critics watch the same set that I did? Awful performance, forgot the words and mumbled the ones she could remember
Jon, Cheshire, UK
Her music comes from the heart - unlike so much that we've had to put up with for so long - manufactured boredom. I guess, if you don't like it, I guess you can tune out & switch off. Not sure there's been a "stable" artist of any kind...ever.
D, London, UK
"...38-year-old - real name Shawn Carter - then powered his way 'threw' an hour and 15 minutes of hits...
through? tsk tsk
gareth, Newport,
Slight lady but a good couple of jabs anyway, right-on-the-money in time with the song for added weight. The gulf between amateur and pro is unmistakable she'll probably get some support from Prescott. She clearly wasn't touched by any of the fans before she lunged, recon she had a bet on.
John, Dursley,
Go and tell your children that it's fine to elbow and punch people who say something nasty to you.
The law condones it. The press seems to condone it by their sickening adoration of this violent law breaker. Society applauds Winehouse's behaviour, so teach your children: take drugs, hit and bribe!
LD, Wimbledon, UK
Obviously no Police community support officers were available to arrest the frail Mizz Winehouse for protecting the wild life sanctuary perched upon her head. The whole thing seems lame..... Glastonbury not Winehouse, her behaviour draws the crowds not her singing.
Keith. Nichol, London, uk
Amy or Duffy? No contest I reckon.
Mike, Kent, UK
The band and backing singers were fantastic, the same can't be said for Amy - she sounded like she was doing an impression of Vic Reeve's pub singer routine.
Chris, Chelmsford,
There would only be one winner with Amy vs John Prescott.
Ed B, Taunton,
Is this really front page news. The poor girl has arms like matchsticks (a punch from her must be like being hit with a wet lettuce leaf) - those calling for her prosecution should save their ire for the real thugs in this world - a certain gentleman in Zimbabwe springs to mind.
Marshall, Blackpool,
If it was a good performance that clip's hardly representative. She sounds like a pissed pub singer.
Joe S. Walker, Liverpool,
It was hardly a punch, and probably well deserved. If you gave abuse to anyone else you'd probably get punched so why should celebrities be any different?
As for prosecuting her, the laws apply just the same as to anybody else, you need real evidence that would stand up in court. Luckily.
Jon, Lake District, UK
for Karen of Putney, sorry to disappoint: Troubled singer Amy Winehouse will not face an investigation after she appeared to throw a punch at a member of the audience at the end of her Glastonbury Festival set, police said.
Roger, London, England
Someone throws a hat at her hair! If you pause it just before she lunges you can see a straw hat hit her on the head.
Jemima, Dorchester,
Katherine, Central Virginia
Learn to spell "throw"
Crofty in the English speaking world
Crofty, cardiff, uk
Lets face it, although Amy is struggling with her life, at least you get what you see, its all on show, none of this show biz "I'm special" rubbish that most so called stars seem to want. In the end Amy has a talent, and good luck to her.
Roger, London, England
Nice report, but I feel a bit uneasy placing confidence in the reporting of a professional journalist who can't tell the difference between "through" and "threw".
Barry, Boston,
He powered his way THROUGH his set, not THREW. Is basic English no longer a requirement for journalism?
Hibbo, Dundee,
Undoubtedly she has a good voice, and i like her music. But come on! Given that it's captured on tape, there is NO excuse to let her off with assault (or possession and use of class one illegal drugs for that matter). Why should she (or Pete D/ Kate Moss) get away with breaking the law so openly?
Sandie, Auckland, New Zealand
No-one has any interest whatsoever over the conduct of an media exposed singing talent. The article is a perfect excercise in journalism that fills not thrills. A sort of written form of a toilet duck, useful but totally forgetful.
Did she sing well? I cannot tell from this article...utter bobbins
raymond, nottingham,
Why are we still wasting time and money on this girl, anyone else behaving in this manner would be at least unemployable, at worst incarcerated, purhaps a bit of both would be a bit of a reality check for Miss Winehouse, stop buying the records and the concert tickets and see how she reacts.
Paul, Darlington, Co Durham
Amy Whinehouse should be in rehab but she'll say no no no
Gernsey, Howard Beach, United States
More free tickets for the CPS and the boys in blue eh ?
Dave, Lincoln,
What an icredible performance !what a girl what a comeback
Why dont you guys let her be .Go for it Amy .lots of oxox
harbourne, shrewsbury, uk
she got mad because they booed when she wouldn't stop rambling on about blake incarcerated. she was obviously drunk. so unprofessional, her poor band was so good. why they put up with her is beyond me.
jack, south carolina,
one doesn't go to jail for doing drugs in one's house
tete, buenos aires, argentina
Actually you do. Anyone else in this country would be prosecuted for drug possession. If you're Amy Winehouse you're above the law apparently. You can do drugs, bribe and punch all you like.
Tom Franklin, London, United Kingdom
The police have just said they are not going to charge her.
It is now official: if any of us, you or I, break the law, all we have to do is pile our hair on our heads, scratch our arms, pull our tops down to show our cleavage and say "But I'm Amy Winehouse, the law is for little people, not me."
Karen, Putney, UK
this was terrible+ if you or i got punched like that ( or punched someone else) someone would be getting prosecuted for assualt. she is a mess, her set was a mess and she should not perform when under the influence of anything. she should be EMBARESSED. talented + privelaged but still a disgrace!!!!
pol, haslingden, england
Have you heard her singing the motown classic"will you still love me tomorrow"?she is unique.regarding the push/punch: we don't know what they were saying to her.how come you people talk of jail?are you all nuts?one doesn't go to jail for doing drugs in one's house.and: DRUG ABUSE IS A DISEASE.
tete, buenos aires, argentina
There is nobody pulling her hair on the video, that is crystal clear. Her spokesman, just like her entire entourage, are merely making excuses and covering up for her again.
Now she's back in hospital - no doubt more pathetic Mitch "my poor princess" outpourings to come.
I agree - arrest her.
John B., Reading, UK
Totally disturbed !! Talented, but crazy !!!
Roberta, São Paulo, Brazil
My! Such talent! She can through a few punches without missing a beat and keep her balance in high heels! Oh, to be so multi-talented! (The hair and make-up are long over due for a change for the better. The B-52s did that retro look ages ago.)
Katherine, Central Virginia, USA
Keep your day job Amy - you'll never make it in boxing
haralambos, joburg,
I'm somewhat dubious that someone pulled her hair given the fact she veered over to the side, but it looks like more of a push than a punch to me. Otherwise I think the performance was better than her lifeless one last year - I just wish she'd ditch the banter.
Ella, London, UK
Gotta go to REHAB!
Yeah too right girl and for all our sakes someone keep her there!!
She must have been a delightful child or not.
Weird, permanently spaced out and so so pathetic!
WHAT A WASTE!
Tony, Blackpool, UK
She's trying to be a Bond girl, obviously.
Hassan Azam, Banbury , England
It looks like somebody flings a white hat which just misses her, she first responds by raising her right elbow in an angry gesture. After a second's reflection (and at the end of her sentence, where the point is made) she adds punctuation with her fist.
James, Cambridge, UK
I watched Amy on the TV last night and she was poor in terms of concert performance. She was barely audible so how knows how 80,000 fans heard her, she rambled, she appeared to have little diction in her voice as well. If that is what people consider to be a good performance then oh dear.
Pete Best, Northampton, UK
What an embarrassing specimen...
Tony Pritchard, Cancun, Mexcico
Oh calm down, everbody. This was a great set by a class permormer.
Looking at her arms a punch from her is unlikely to hurt. Anyone down the front at a big gig has to expect to be pushed and jossled at best in any case.
john, Edinburgh,
Hey. We can only see part of what's going on. Maybe someone tried to cop a feel. Looks like people were throwing stuff at Amy. Vintage fruit of the loom?
Her lashing out was a reaction to whatever. And she still sounded great.
M. Khan, Peterborough, UK
I say - GOOD FOR HER.
Best to vent your frustrations - instead of bottling them up. No doubt the fan was so delighted to be touched by Amy anyway so WHAT'S THE PROBLEM ?
Everybody wins !
There are men who would line up to be punched up by Amy !
Bryan, Bray, Ireland
Please, do we have to have any more print about this seemingly disturbed woman who is sadly an influence on our younger generation we could seriously do without. Please no more mention and no more images of her. I love music, I love rock, I love to see people having fun, but this simply is not!
john, Glasgow,
What a laugh Amy Winehouse turned out to be. What makes music lovers praise her so much and newspapers focus on her " great performances" as far as music goes old Amy continuously forgets the lyrics, has mega probs with her movements and is continuously looking for her knickers. Future comedian?
Ceri Davies, Torremolinos, Sain.
She's no "damsel in distress" David from Bromley. She's the creator of her own situation, nobody's holding her hostage! Winehouse is totally self obsessed, I too was outraged at hearing her chant "free Blakey" at the Mandela concert, and her family - esp her father - pandering to her is stupid.
Fiona, Wokingham, UK
Comical fake tan, trying to get us in the audience to look up her skirt, out of tune, appalling voice, dressed like a whore, rambling and incoherent, moaning on and on about her idiotic criminal husband, and violent.
Nobody grabbed her hair, she just didn't like anyone who didn't think she's God.
HG, London, UK
She looks and sounds awful....If I acted in the way she does (not just at Glastonbury, I would be fired from my job and not be allowed to work anywhere else in my industry......why is she still promoted
MH, London, UK
Amy Winehouse is he most talented female artist to come out of the British Isles in the past 3 decades. She writes her own music, which is a rare occurence in today's comercialised manufactured music industry. After speaking to the well informed Mr Jonathan WIngate he reiterated this belief.
Oliver Cowley, London, England
This behaviour is what keeps her in the limelight. As for her talent, she can sing and write passable songs but pop culture is so over the top that she has to become an icon. Talent? Listen to some real music then listen to her and see if you can still say she has such great talent.
Peter, Middlewich, UK
"On top form"? I saw Winehouse on TV and she was all over the place, fragile, slurring, stumbling, totally out of it. It was heartbreaking. And the audience were just holding their cameras in her face - a freak show is what they paid for.
Amy Allen, London,
Who cares.
Pete, London, UK
I watched Jay-Z and if that is where Glasto is headed, it's downhill from here on. Totally boring.
helen, barnsley, uk
Dying one minute and punching a fan the next minute.
No problem regardless of what she does her fans will
support her to the max.
Jerry Scroggin, Phoenix, Arizona/USA
the freakshow has now surpassed the talent level. you dont have to loisten too carefully to tel that she is out of tune and forcing the notes. A pathetic waste of tealent and money
patrick, The Hague, netherlands
I have very little time for the current pop culture. However, Amy Winehouse is a very talented singer, beyond the usual standard of pop performer. She more appropriately belongs in the jazz- orientated realm. She is clearly a damsel in distress and should be taken out of the media limelight.
David, Bromley,
I think that her popularity with the fans, and her wonderful voice, might have something to do with it. Otherwise they would probably be hiring Chris from Ashford
Simon, Richmond, England
I agree - the Metropolitan Police need to issue a statement about why Amy Winehouse seems to be immune from our laws.
- She openly takes Class A and B drugs.
- She has assaulted members of the public before.
- She gave her husband money to bribe his assault victim.
Now again. Jail her.
CR, London, United Kingdom
Arrest her.
Karen Henderson, Henley, Oxon, United Kingdom
She's obsessed with Blake, who is even more of a loser than she is (ie, all he's good at is living off her) and will mention him whenever she can.
I used to like her and I think her music's OK, but someone needs to bring her back to Earth before she gets in REAL trouble.
Jude, Paris, France
On top form. The woman was diabolical and incoherent. She spent most of the session trying to get the audience to look up her dress. Why do people keep praising this talentless thuggette?
CA, Manchester, UK
Yet another physical assault on a member of the public by Amy Winehouse.
Anyone else would be arrested and charged. We are waiting police: arrest her for this.
The more the police in this country let this woman break the law without prosecution, the more she does it. She's just proved it again!
Laura Roberts, London, United Kingdom
She shamed herself and insulted Mandela at the concert by bleating "Free my husband Blakey" to the Free Nelson Mandela song.
I cannot understand why anybody hires this vile woman, is it just for freakshow value, to see if she turns up and "does something"?
She has assaulted again - ARREST HER.
Tom Franklin, London, United Kingdom
Everybody will look at a train wreck, even if they know they shouldn't.
Bob Shore, Buffalo, NY
Watch the video..... there is nobody "grabbing her hair"!!!!!
She lashes out repeatedly at somebody..... she assaulted them! When are the police going to step in..... she keeps on doing it and gets away with it
This has truly gone too far. The police need to state why they never prosecute her.
James, London, United Kingdom
Why do promoters hire this individual. I know just to line their pockets. About time the broadcasters reacted by banning her.
Chris, Ashford, Middx, England
