TRACK: London Girl
WHO: The unfeasibly pie-fingered trio The Invisible.
WHAT: Elusively dextrous deep beats.
HYPE: "They flit from barmy post-rock to balmy funk, hopping blithely from sound to sound, because these dudes are avant-garde slags." - Pinglewood
WE SAY: There’s a humoungous potential for initimidating denisity and noodliness on this whole project. Between members Dave Okumu, Tom Herbert and Leo Taylor, they’ve spawned Bugz In The Attic, Zongamin, Gramme, Acoustic Ladyland and Mercury-nommed ultra-jazzers Polar Bear, plus the relentlessly unconventional Matthew Herbert handles production, so one could be forgiven for being inclined to reach for McFly or something equally breezy.
The Invisible aren’t for those after immediate, poppy fare – as shown by their single Constant is a haunting, brooding and often-dischordant intense math rock beast held together by the icy melody.
But don’t think there isn’t plenty of fun to be had. Monster’s Waltz, a huuuuge hit with Zane Lowe, was an intricate krautprog-funk charmer, but for me, their next single London Girl is the one.
Keeping the beats parked in the more sedater DFA territory, London Girl rides an almighty rhythm that sounds like God playing a bass with the Golden Gate Bridge, the riffing bubbles along with quite confidence, it’s a breathy wonder allows you to forget the credit crunch, the bad weather and the fact that Chelsea are still in the premier league.
IF YOU ONLY NEED TO KNOW ONE THING: One of the band has a really massive beard.
WHERE CAN I GET MY HANDS ON IT: London Girl is taken from their forthcoming, self-titled album, due out on Accidental in September.
