The man, the films, those blondes. Free DVD collection starting this Sunday
A black carpet was rolled out and there was talk of a posthumous Oscar, as Heath Ledger film The Dark Knight was unveiled in New York last night.
Michael Caine led the tributes to Ledger, who died of an accidental drug overdose in January, telling reporters that his co-star's turn as The Joker in the latest Batman film was “the best performance of a villain I have seen”.
“My feeling is that he will get a nomination, I would be very surprised if he didn't get the Oscar - he has my vote anyway," said Sir Michael.
The Australian actor’s family were more reserved in their appreciation of the movie, his father, Kim, simply gave a thumbs-up to the press as he left the screening.
Ledger’s mother, Sally Bell, her husband, and Ledger's sister, Kate, were also reported to have attended the premiere of the film, which is expected to be a Box Office hit, but avoided the black carpet, slipping in through a different entrance.
Despite a block of central Manhattan being shut down for the premiere and the presence of a large crowd eager to star spot, Christian Bale, who returns as Batman, made clear that Ledger, who was 28, was at the forefront of the cast’s mind.
"He's created this anarchic, Sid Vicious-like, punk rock Joker, unlike any Joker that's been seen before. I think it's a real classic portrayal that will be remembered for ages.
"It is tragic he is not here, but I am here to see his talents and celebrate it and I hope everybody will."
Director Christopher Nolan said: “What we wanted to do was create a villain that's iconic and terrifying, I think, but also recognisably human.
"And I think Heath does that in a very interesting way - I think people are going to be blown away."
Michelle Williams, Ledger’s former fiancée and the mother of his two-year-old daughter, did not attend, but his one-time partner, actress Naomi Watts, followed his family’s lead and entered through a back door with her husband.
The film, widely predicted to smash box office opening records, will have its London premiere on July 21, ahead of its UK release on July 25.

one of the best films this year due to a well written script of twist and turns creating very real but well developed characters. This leading to Heath ledgers performance which leaves jack nicholson in dark a truely fantastic achievement for any actors career. Which will hopefully get an oscar

This film will be collecting dust on your dvd shelf for years to come, next to Batman Begins and all the other Batman films.

Heath can be regarded as the greatest actor of our generation . Two Hands, The Monster's Ball, Four Feathers, Ned Kelly, Candy, Brokeback Mountain & The Dark Knight give testimony to his versatile consummate acting style, uniquely, imaginative, subtle and powerful expressions of the soul - so real!
M Luke, Melbourne, Australia
I cannot disagree more strongly that Ledger created an iconic character, the make up artists, the designers and the director created this version of the Joker. They should give him the "Jack Sparrow" award for an unconvincing, silly voice thru an entire movie.
Mark Watson, Barcelona, Spain
Having seen the film I agree it is an incredible movie but just like Batman Begins it suffers from some terminal miscasting. Heath Ledger would only be honoured for his unfortunate death, not his portrayal of the joker which consists of a lot of lip smacking, blinking and a silly voice.
Mark Watson, Barcelona, Spain
I saw this movie last night and I must say this is the summers greatest movie. Heath Ledger played by far the greatest villian of all time and for the people who commented stating that the attention is drawn to him only because of his death, I highly disagree whether he is dead or alive He will win!
Christine, Gatineau, Canada
@Jon- "Nobody cared less until his unfortunate death. "
Absolutley right. And lets not forget that this Ledger fellow died of a prescription drug overdose, and had an illegitimate child. Not something that anyone with any morals would want to hold up and celebrate.
*Siiigh*, Hollywood...
Matt, London, , uk
I just saw the movie last night. He deserves an Oscar for his performance...maybe all you people who are critical of why people say he deserves the award should actually SEE the movie before you comment...just a thought.
Christine, Guelph, ON
Heath Ledger will definately win the Oscar, not based on pity at all. He has done an amazing job with all of his work, especially his most valued; The Dark Knight. I have been a fan of his for years, and its tragic how he had to die so young and talented. He definately blew Nicholson out of water:)
Rachael N., Sarasota, FL,
The cynical and negative commentators prove one thing - they lack class. How can you make such comments in the wake of Heath Ledger's tragic death, at such a young age, leaving behind a young daughter? And air such idiotic comments in a public forum? btw, he was a superb actor, and still improving!
Tony L, Jakarta,
Heath Ledger will win the Oscar but not because he's dead. He has earned it through his greatest performance. He created an iconic character. If you brush up on your Oscar history then you will know that only one actor has won an Oscar after they have died. Sympathy has nothing to do with it.
Hector, McMinnville,
Greatest actor of our generation? Only until the next one dies.
Nobody cared less until his unfortunate death.
jon, berkshire,
Heath Ledger would have been the greatest actor of our generation.
Brendan, Warnambool, Australia
Seen the clips. Not even the shadow of Nicholson. Or Caesar Romero, for that matter.
Eugene, heidelberg, germany
Somewhat of a cynic aren't you Nick and Alison.
Jerry Scroggin, Phoenix, Arizona/USA
If he wins it's because he deserved it sentimentality has nothing to do with it. The world has lost a truly iconic actor the dark knight lays testament to that.
lesley, cardiff,
Well said, Nick Mortimer!
Alison, York,
Of course he'll win an oscar , he's dead! The showbiz world loves sentimentality
